It is commendable that the Republican Party has elected its first minority chairman. I hope they do not miss the point. While the lack of diversity in the party marginalizes the party, this is not its major problem. The Republican problem is the incoherency of its values and platform.
How can the party of small government believe in an extra large military infrastructure or in nation building?
How can a party that believes that the government is too intrusive want to control one’s bedroom and a woman’s body?
How can a party that believes in the free enterprise believe in trickledown economics (pseudo fascism) as opposed to trickle up to allow for real competition of small businesses and the average worker?
How can the party of fiscal responsibility have such a poor record with both the economy and the country’s budget? The policies of Republicans have always resulted in our largest budget deficits (this is a demonstrable fact).
How can the party that pretends to be moral care so little about the well being of the middle class?
Our current economic crisis is a direct result of Reaganomics(which Bush 1 called Voodoo Economics), Bush1’s care taking of Reaganomics, Clinton’s triangulation, and George Bush’s ineptitude. For the sake of the country I hope President Obama sticks to his guns and regulate the financial markets; allow real competition between business and employees, and create a real single payer healthcare system.

I've decided to be offended by the suggestion that Mr. Steele isn't "black enough". Before I explain why, let me say that I'm an independent Obama supporter who has been disgusted with the conduct of both parties for more than a few years. I certainly don't expect anything from the Repubs...

That said, to suggest that there is some ideological or other standard for blackness is just as racist as lynching or profiling. Mr. Steele has earned his black card by walking around in his skin for however many years he's been alive. Whether or not I agree with his politics, he's just as black as me (and I AM black). I'd like to measure the credentials of anyone who questions that against my own!

If he brings the Republican party back to the conservative principles of Reagan and Roosevelt, then bring him on. If he can bring the social agenda back to the sensible middle, then let the storm clouds roll. But please, leave the racial judgements where they belong...in your head. I'm actually happy about this (perhaps naievely so). To me this is more another milestone for African-Americans than about the GOP. What I'm hoping is that he isn't just GOP window dressing like Sarah Palin and there's actually substance there (seems like it from what I've read). As I've mentioned in another post, this can't be just about putting a black face out there to represent. It has to mean something to the entire party. Are they ready to appeal to a broader audience in deed as well as words, or is this just tokenism.

I'll keep a close eye on how they approach the new administration. Especially after his "obstruct" remark.

As an ex-(long term)registered Republican I would love to see the Republican Party get their act together and once again offer viable representation for the average American instead of just trying to manipulate public opinion based on their ability to exploit emotions for individual issues that they aren't even sincere about. To accomplish that turn around the best start would be to admit their serious failure to represent the middle-class over the last eight years, not needing to dwell long on the apology but definitely needing to acknowledge the fault, and to then declare a strong and real commitment to change their focus. Moderate conservatism is great but continuing the arrogant and irresponsible total focus on the wealthy, Special Interests and a select few while giving only apathy, the costs and an abundance of subterfuge to the majority is totally obnoxious. They have created a considerable hurdle for themselves to overcome with their persistent strong and stubborn support of the arrogant and irresponsible (likely even criminal) Bush-Cheney administration. To now seriously and foolishly neglect reaching out to the middle-class and honestly addressing the substantial and real problems facing them would be just asking for the wrath of the middle-class to fall upon them. If they adhere to their current belief that all value is found in the satisfaction of the few and continue to depend on trying to deceive the many, then they really deserve to be relegated to lastingly be the minority party or worse. Touting puppet people like Sarah Palin and focusing on politics as usual instead of honestly and responsibly approaching bipartisanship is a sure sign that they just don't get the seriousness of the problems and can't divorce themselves from their self-focus. Appointing an African-American RNC chairperson is commendable but lacks the real substance needed. Let's hope they can get the message.

The demoncrats were not able to have an honorable person for their party…Mr. Obama wouldn’t be a president if he did not buy that position with $668M…now he wants to pay off ACORN with 5.2B for helping him get to that position…frankly, majority of the demoncrats have mental deficiency in recognizing anything without hate and envy or in any decision making.
BTW...demoncrats want to blaim President Bush for their request of $819B...now that is real sick!

The Republicans are a strong party. Just look at who has dominated the spotlight this week. REPUBLICANS! The Democrats are showing their true colors. Obama was never a true Democrat and neither was Bill Clinton. Why do you think the DNC is so poorly managed? Obama won because he was Obama, not a Democrat. Nancy Pelosi is the person who is going to destroy her own party. I think this week just is shaping up how inclusive our party really is between Sarah Palin, Ron Paul and now Michael Steele all in the news this week. Olympia Snowe was even on MSNBC this week which is rare. And if Chris Mathews likes Mike Steele, Democrats should start being concerned. Ed Gillespie will help bring our Party back.

The racial divide on here sucks! I hate it. I thought it would be over when we elected Obama. It's sad to read these postings. I voted for Obama not because of the color of his skin, because I felt he was the right person for the job. I am happy for Steele. Give the man a chance. Like I wish people would give Obama a chance. So far so good. What I believe in my heart is we are all children of God, and we each have a right to be here. Times have changed since I was a teen in the 60's living in Los Angeles. Thank God for that! Everyone including Palomino! is entitled to their opinion. I don't have to like it, just except the fact not everyone is going to agree with mine! Enough!

It is amazing how President Obama has shaken up the GOP. First, they pick a clueless woman to run with John McCain, now they appoint Mr. Steele as chairman of the GOP. Can someone PLEASE explain to me how the Republicans are to blame for Hurricane Katrina?????? Does anyone want to blame the inept and corrupt politicians who were "trying" to run the city of New Orleans. They are to blame 100%!!! My goodness......look at the disasters in Iowa with the massive flooding, and in Texas with Hurricane Ike. The leaders in these communities actually knew what they were doing and worked toward keeping the citizens safe.People who fall into both "R" and "D" affiliations worked hand in hand doing their job. Imagine that!!!!!!
And while those of you who say you would never be associated with a party that is filled with "racist/ hateful" people I ask you to look in the mirror. Your comments reflect a genuine hate for people who might have a different opinion than yourself. Your words are mean spirited and very hateful.
Mr. Steele is indeed a very articulate and educated man who was selected for his ability to act and not react to the challenges facing the GOP. There is such a double standard in our culture today - so obvious.
Finally, have any of you heard of the great billionare Mr. Madeoff???? He is a card carrying democrat who got tons of money from his friends in the democratic party - namely Chuck Schumer. Have you ever heard of him? Another democrat.
