California in fact has well over a million (closer to 1.5 million) government workers. 10,000 workers being laid off is less then 1% of the work force. That type of lay off is usually done through attrition, i.e., people retiring, quitting, or being terminated for poor performance (yeah, like that happens).

As for the temporary furloughs, people in private industry should be so lucky to get that deal. Whereas the government worker loses a day or two of pay a month, workers in private industry lose 20 days of pay a month when they are laid off, and that’s forever. In addition to that, the furloughed government worker does lose a day or two of pay a month, but none of their benefits. Try getting that deal in the private sector.

And what does Obama do to solve the problem? Does he bail out private industries? No, (except for the Banks which he’s in the process of nationalizing, along with a token contribution to the automakers because of the unions) he bails out the inefficient and wasteful state governments. That’s insane.

So MSirrera – glad to have had the opportunity to clear all this up for you.
First thoughts: Tonight's address

Well it’s here. When I think back to the early days of the campaign, as I was listening to each of the candidates, it was pretty clear to me early on that Barack Obama stood apart from the rest of the candidates. I can’t put my finger on it exactly why I thought this. Maybe that was the point.

And so now we have President Obama about to go before Congress for the first time, just 5 weeks into his Presidency. This is why I voted for him. I didn’t want a typical President because I knew these weren’t typical times. Tonight I hope he shows us why he’s not. Perhaps we already know why. This Administration has been working 24/7, not because these are the best of times, but because these are the worst of times.

I don’t know what the president is going to say this evening. What I do know is that I’m happy that it will be Barack Obama speaking to us at this moment in time. Sometimes the right thing to do is to simply be honest. This is one of those times.

This is our country. But it’s a big country, and it’s an old country. We all must do our part to help it move forward. President Obama is without a doubt the right man at the right time to set out this agenda.

It is up to us to do the rest. Winter is just about over.
First thoughts: Tonight's address

I hope the republicans do keep trying to retain their base. That during the campaign, Candidate Obama was derided for being too hopeful.

Now, President Obama is criticized for being too realistic with the American people about what is happening with the economy.

Let me let the media in on a little secret - we already know how bad the economy is! We've known it for YEARS!

Do you really think that because you make a little happy talk on TV, that we don't see what's going on?

Don't flatter yourselves.
___________________________________________________

To Banker Guy:

Yesterday you wrote, in part:

"I work in banking and what you have written has no standing whatsoever. You want to see the impact of CRA? Go into any branch of any bank that is within five miles of an economically depressed area. Everyone of those banks, if they don't want the regulators all over them, has loans that they know they will never see paid. Ask to see their public files, the CRA requires that they keep one and provide it upon request. "

======================================
So you are basically telling me that because you work at a bank, you have noticed than when the economy goes south, areas that are already “economically depressed” are hardest hit.

You don’t say.

I suppose that poor people defaulting on their little $65,000 homes is the reason that housing values were exploding from 10% - 25% a year in some areas while most people’s wages remained stagnant.

And I suppose that the poor people defaulting on their little $65,000 homes forced banking executives to pay themselves more than 300 times what their employees earn.

And of course if it weren’t for poor people defaulting on their little $65,000 homes, Bernie Madoff wouldn’t have had to create his 50 billion dollar ponsy scheme.

Those dastardly poor people in “economically depressed areas” have a heck of a lot of nerve trying to own their own homes on the substandard wages they are earning from the unregulated corporations that refuse to pay them a living wage all while the management of these same institutions can afford to purchase homes on each coast.

Well I suppose you really set me straight on that. What was I thinking?

First thoughts: Tonight's address

I am sure that President Obama is going to give a great speech tonight. It will be interesting to hear what he has too say to our nation. Observing the conference/summit at the White House yesterday, was politically interesting to watch. President Obama let everyone in the room know who is in command, and kept everyone on task. This President keeps on impressing me so far. As for "Jerk Jindal's" rebuttal tonight. It will be interesting to watch if responds to all of President Obama's speech, or just the parts that will earn him points with his politically backwards party base. Time to move forward America!

First thoughts: Tonight's address

FR: Obama taking questions from these folks resembled a formal White House press conference, or better yet the British prime minister’s question hour with Parliament.

It's real nice that Obama provides the press with pleasent images, but at some point Obama is going to have to provide some results. None to date have been seen. None that are positive anyway.

And if you look at Obama, he's had the worst start of nearly any President. The stock market has gone down the most for any new President, except for Jerry Ford, who was dealing with the Nixon resignation crisis and run away inflation. Obama's staff is completely out of control, he can't even get his full cabinet seated. Obama's Treasury Secretary doesn't pay his taxes, then says he has a plan, which turns out to be nothing more then scribbles on yellow Post-It notes.

Imagery is nice. Results are better. Obama gets an A for imagery, a F for results.

First thoughts: Tonight's address

Sometimes watching current events is like watching a movie with its drama, comedy, plots and subplots. Now and then events make sense and we are inclined to interpret and predict what will happen next.

Paul Krugman talks about banks that have more debt than assets. Several of the largest 20 banks are now now called "zombie banks" (love those funny names) because they are not willing or able to make loans. President Obama does not use words like, "nationalizing the banks", but it will come to that. AIG, CitiCorp, BoA will be regulated and likely owned by the government.
So, who else has debt greater than their assets? Besides the majority of the American people: GM and Chrysler. Most will argue that it is in the national interest to have an auto industry, but what will it look like? Chrysler will go the way of Studebaker, American Motors (Nash). Ford will likely remain private and become the major auto company. G.M. will likely never be able to make a car as well as Honda and Toyota. Why? Becuase Toyota and Honda are continuing to improve their product. Even with government bailout money, G.M.'s market share will decline. It's gonna happen. So how does this real life movie end? My guess is Ford and G.M. will merge and we will have one car company that is both private and public.

BTW, President Obama's poll numbers are closer to 65% than 60% and the congressional GOP numbers are in the toilet. John Boehner has learned to keep his mouth shut...and so will Eric Cantor.

First thoughts: Tonight's address

H. It's the Democrats' turn.

Red Sox/NYY anyone?

First thoughts: Tonight's address

President Obama needs to talk to the country, because if he does not, the media will try to speak for him and they never get it right.

The media claimed for a long time - “he needs to explain to the people what this all means". I remember McCain continuously denied he would seek the white house in 2008. Obviously, the Republican goal is to show diversity, while preaching a southern state right’s argument. The republican puppet masters do not care who is elected as a republican. The puppet master will pull the republican presidents strings and ensure he does not drift far off message. The republicans are all about talking points, staying on message and ensuring the wealthy rule. The republicans are master of deception. The republicans tout out the little guy, like Joe the plumber, and use these paid pundits to sell the so-called middle class dream. Their motto is , if it is good for the rich, then it will be good for America.

First thoughts: Tonight's address

The president has been in office a month!! Like Obama, you are immediately struck by his intelligence, and that is reassuring. But Jindal quickly lost my confidence as it became evident he uses his intelligence to play political games, as when he argued smoothly the feds should pay to repair the levees and the destruction caused by Katrina because the levees were built by the feds in the first place. He has no problem soaking us for Katrina money and not calling it aid to his state. It's something we "owe" to Louisiana, but we don't owe it to Michigan to prevent the collapse of the auto industry, etc. He's just a wily coyote. This way, the laid off workers are only liable for 35% of the monthly premium. I thought this was good, until I read and researched the mechanics behind this.
First of all, the Employer is the tool that pays the 65% to the insurance company. At the end of every quarter, the employer files their 941(a tax document every employer, small or big) must file with the IRS.This document simply lists the gross wages the employer paid for the quarter, the total Federal Tax withheld for the quarter, and the total Social Security and Medicare(known as FICA)taxes withheld for the quarter, plus the total of the employers match of the FICA withheld. This is as easy as the 941 filing is. When complete this form should equal the deposits the employer made each week, or each month depending on the size of the employer. The employer is required to deposit the total withholdings.
Now the good part! Beginnning with the 1st quarter of 2009, the 941 has added a new line(12a) to the form. The employer should list the total amount he has paid for the 65% Cobra participants. The employer will receive a "credit" for this amount!!!! So, an already cash-strapped employer is paying the 65% subsidy up front, and the government will give them a credit on their 941 for the amount. And of course, the money is coming from an account set up for none other than Social Security!!! Not to even go to the red tape involved in an employer really getting the funds they fronted!!

First thoughts: Tonight's address

Lynn Wheatly: 10,000 people = "nothing" Thank you for that lesson in right wing accounting.

"the opposition's official response,"

What could that be? Although today unions are less powerful, all of us who work in large corporations including non-union ones have benefited from the fights they fought for employee rights, wages, and fairness. To vilify unions and union workers is dumb but the GOP does it. Maybe the GOP should ask themselves a question: if we weren't so anti-union, would union members vote republican? They might if the ideas are good. It's time for republicans to stop blocking White House appointees so that the new administration can get to work. During the Bush years, republicans said the administration has a right to have the cabinet members they want--apparently that's only if it's a republican president. Americans voted for a new direction, it's time republicans realize what that meant. Bobby Jindal may be a new GOP voice but being governor of one of the poorest states in the country I would think he'd accept any aid from the Feds that he could get--politics first, citizens of the state last. Being conservative shouldn't mean being unwilling to help the people of your state in a crisis such as we have now. Once again, republicans show they have no heart.

First thoughts: Tonight's address

Just as with Bush, the media will tell us what Obama said after he finishs tonight.

We'll get the real story then.

First thoughts: Tonight's address

Lynn Wheatly,
Just because the number of layoffs mount to less than 1% of the government's workers does not make it something other than a layoff. A layoff is a layoff, no matter what the number. And temporary fuloughs do occur in private industry. I know of a case for that in my state.

First thoughts: Tonight's address

Obama is fond of whining about inheriting the economic problems of this country. (Pretty rich, whining about inheriting the job he campaigned two years for and spent nearly a billion dollars to get.) Anyone want to take bets on how many minutes into tonight's address that Obama invokes the inheritance line? So called government layoffs are anything but. They amount to less then 1% of the workforce that is being laid off. Private industry on the other hand has nearly 100% of the layoffs in the country. So, what is Obama's solution? He bails out the government and leaves private industry to flounder.

If you work in government, you have almost perfect job security. It is highly unlikely that you will be let go. And Obama infused another trillion dollars into government to further guarantee that government workers will not be laid off. I have never seen a more sad, pathetic bunch of misfits in my entire life (I am 50) than what I see today. One person spoke of the evils/perils of socializing. Yeah your free market unregulated economy is a shining example of the way things should be done. Others spoke of letting things lay as they were and not helping out the economy. Good choice. Now you can really pick up some downhill momentum and if you are lucky you can have the President declare a force majeur (sp?) and have the US dollar devalued and replaced with something different. I have read many accounts that the Canadian banking system is one of the stronger models in the world right now. This is not a time to gloat, but rather a time of reflection for the world and to set a course correction. Find a new approach. The one you are using is broken and not worth fixing. Regarding socialism, I love the fact that we have socialized health care in this country. Is our system perfect, hell no. It needs to be revamped in a big way. But it keeps everyone from losing everything in the unfortunate event of a major illness or accident.

You sit and whine and moan about your President's inability to forge ahead and wave his magic wand and correct the myriad of fundamental problems that plague not only your economy, but your mindset. Would you rather another 4 years of damn the torpedoes and full steam ahead like you just had, or perhaps, just maybe, a little caution and sober second thought might be in order. When President Obama began campaigning for the presidency a few years back, the economy was beginning to sour, but had not spoiled like it has now. This rapid decline necessitates a new approach, not one that was born on the campaign trail.

You people bashing the current administration disgust me. President Obama is being chased by a dog in heat. If he runs he gets bit, if he stands still he gets screwed!! The American people are solely the ones to blame for your crisis. Yes you can blame the previous administration, but stop and think, who put him there!!

Grow up and take your lumps. This too shall pass. Give the Man a chance and he will more than live up to your grandiose expectations.

He is a good man and a great choice for President. Maybe it is time to try and support your President instead of calling him down. That might take more courage than some of you are able or willing to muster.

First thoughts: Tonight's address

Ed Crane, Middlebury, IN: '...Big Business should pack up and leave America and move to more business friendly countries....'

Who's first ?
Bank of America or Merril Lynch ?
CitiGroup ? Here's a hint. Offshore sites labor costs are a lot cheaper then the in the US. The US and State governments load up businesses in the US with taxes, regulations, hiring requirements. Unions specify how much their members will make and that you cannot fire them. Environmental laws make it more and more expensive for these businesses to operate. All these taxes and regulations have driven the businesses offshore.

The cause of the migration of jobs to offshore sites is caused by the government.
