A smart man, he takes away any problems with prisoners being able to talk or report torture tactics.

One can look at this two ways. Just like those guarding Nazi concentration camps...."just following orders" famous last words as jail doors klink. Or, yes lets not fool with the little fish we can get them out of the way and go after the big fish. Cheney, Bush, Rumsfeld, Ashcroft and maybe a couple of others better be careful they would be the big fish in this scenario. (Which one gets to play shad first and get planked...er waterboarded?)

This sounds an awful lot like COMPROMISE to me. Rather than buckle to Republicans who threatened to shut down the government if he released any memos, and rather than go full-tilt to the left and order immediate trials of all involved, he took the middle road. Releasing the memos will allow us more insight into what happened and who ordered it.

I'm far less interested in prosecuting the actual operatives who poured the water down the throats and up the nostrils of shackled detainees than in prosecuting those who authorized and ordered this behavior. Maybe these memos will help us nail those who are really responsible. Maybe not. Either way, we'll know more tomorrow than we know today and that's always a good thing.

What they did was NOT illegial and was NOT against the Geneva convention.

"harsh interrogation techniques" are not Illegial interrogation techniques.

The US Navy Seals go thru FAR worse techniques than the prisoners went thru. And they do it willingly!

My hat is off to the Obama administration for its efforts to restore American values to our system of justice, and for eliminating torture as a means of interrogation of ANY terrorist, be he foreign or domestic. After all, we tried Timothy McVeigh in a court of law, didn't we? Had we tortured him, he would have been able to go Scott free...

But, what remains to be done, is to bring those civil servants to trial for the war crimes they have committed. Now, I am not referring to CIA officers who merely carried out instructions, but to those senior Bush administration officials that granted permission to TORTURE, which is an international war crime, which should not just be swept under the rug. I am talking about Addington, Yoo, Rove, Cheney, and any other senior officials who took part in this clear violation of international law and the Geneva Convention.

Those who were lawyers, like John Yoo, should be immediately disbarred, and along with the others who approved torture, should be criminally charged.

Or, should we have to depend on another country, such as Spain, to enforce international law for us? This would add shame upon shame. Our country deserves better, and 9-11 was not an excuse to throw all the inconvenient laws and international treaties aside.

We must to set a new precedent, a precedent of justice and fairness. But, we have not yet finished that task.

Nor should they be. The reason what they do is classified "Top Secret" is to maintain the countries safety. People clammoring for Secret or Top Secret information haven't got a clue as to what is going on in this world. What has happend to Obama the appeaser, who was elected by the left to undo all things Bush is he is now facing reality. The reality that many people out there whether through jeolousy or pure raw hatred want to destroy our way of life.

His broken campaign promises were a given when he was making them. All the promises indicated to anyone who had ever had a top secret clearance was that he didn't have any idea of what he was talking about. Just like 99% of those who sponsored him haven't got a clue as to what is really going on.

That is why he is still tapping phones, and will probably just send prisoners taken in this war to a country where our laws and priviledges for our citizens do not exist. Since he wants Gitmo closed he should send them all back to the authorities in their own countries, and let them deal with them. Trust me they won't get welfare and a new home.

Fire them all.... NOW! (It seems they forgot that they work for "We the People", and we pay their wages along with their benefits, and provide them with the money for their spending spree!

This is a difficult issue to resolve. Nazis were convicted at Nuremberg after using they were "just following orders" defense.

I am NOT comfortable with what was authorized or what was done and there has been NO VERIFIABLE evidence presented that info obtained in this manner prevented any further attacks. Former VP's assertions to the contrary, where's the proof?

America and Americans where shocked after 911 but that shock does not, in my opinion, justify these actions that are clearly against the Genenva Convention. Calling them "enemy combatants" does not change these facts.

I grew up watching WWII movies where the "dirty Japs" tortured our brave soldiers. How? by waterbnoarding them!

This whole incident and the defense of it by BOTH parties SUCKS!!!

This news has to be sour for you to swallow, so I'll tell you all a very amusing story to try to cheer you up:

I have a very dear friend who was an 8 term congressman-a fiscally conservative democrat who voted against Bill Clinton's tax increase. As a result of his 'nay' vote, the DNC refused him any funding for his re election campaign in '96, so he was left to do it on his own.

At a family gathering that fall, he was bemoaning the uphill battle he faced, and said that the 'only votes I can really count on are in this room'.

At that point, his grandfather spoke up. "Son," he said, "I have only voted for a Democrat once in my life. I was on jury, and we voted to convict the SOB!"

My friend lost his seat.

That 89 year old immigrant was involved in the deaths of more than 29,000 Jews. The difference is that the CIA officials who actually carried out the orders were told explicitly that they were legal. We need to go after the ones who fed them those lies.
