I had the pleasure to attend Treasure Island in Lynchburg, VA for several summers in the mid-80's. The camp was affiliated with Liberty U and Dr. Falwell's church. Those summers have left me with both fond memories and values.

Dr Falwell's passing is a sad day for this nation. He was a tremendous preacher, a great pastor, and a good man. Like the rest of us, he often spoke before he thought, but he was indeed a wonderful person. This nation is the better because he chose to contribute to it.

All i will say is that as a resident of Lynchburg, VA I am glad that he will no longer be able to currupt the city government to his will. I didn't like him much before I moved here but then after having lived here and seen and heard all the different things that he got himself involved in I could not stand him. I do not wish death on anyone including Jerry. However, his absence will hopefully allow the city to do things it needs to do financially to grow and prosper. It's easy to believe what you see on tv and hear on radio it is a whole other ballgame when it starts affecting you in your front yard and surroundings.

At this point I would normally say simply "let the dead rest" and move on, but even though there may have been many who were uplifted by Falwell and his message and who also became better people as a result, these people, IMHO, are in a distinct minority. Far too many other people have been negatively affected and emotionally scarred by this man's general message of hatred and intolerance. And he did this in the name of Christ, a man whose message was the polar opposite. May he rest in peace--and condolences to the people in his family who must go through their natural period of grief--but I am not even going to pretend to show this man any respect.

WoW. Everyone's ready to flay the late Jerry Falwell. I always thought he was a little over the top, but not anymore. After reading alot of posts about his "hate" speech etc, I 've come to see that he was simply speaking biblical truth. To all those who would say that Jesus spoke of tolerance, well simply put your wrong. Jesus spoke out against the society he lived in, and as a result was crucified. If to have the opinion that homosexuality is wrong and depraved means your a "hate" monger, then I'm proud to be one. I suppose all the homosexuals who literally hate christians will never be considered "hate" mongers though there words are usually much more vicious and demeaning. All christians say is it's wrong to have sexual relations with the same sex, just as it's wrong to have pre-marital sex. I love you all. Flame me.

The old Testament does speak to it--so I understand you are not a Christian on the topic of homosexuality but rather and "Old Testamenter."
