The Obama administration's special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke, said today that Taliban offenses in Pakistan are dramatically changing the attitude of the government and people there.

This is excellent news, excellent indeed.

The problem is that there is no government in Pakistan, at a least not a central one that has control over anything. Pakistan is sliding down the same road as Afghanistan, and nothing is being done to stop the slide from occuring.

Holbrooke sees it. Too bad Obama isn't listening. Pakistan is collapsing. Not only is North Korea now a nuclear weapon power, now Pakistan's nukes are close to falling into the hands of the terrorists. But Obama will stand up in mosques giving flower speeches of love, all the while the Islamic extremeists laugh at him and see that Obama is weak, a man leading a country with no teeth.

Are you deranged? It doesn't matter what the people and governments attitude in Pakistan is, the country is falling into chaos. The Taliban is smacking Pakistan around like it was a rag doll. The country is serioulsy in danger of falling to them.

I think you guys are missing the point. Yes, the people of Pakistan are angry about the latest bombing. Holbrooke considers this encouraging, but its really nothing more than a knee-jerk response to the latest violence. I don't see anything in this article about some kind of real shift in the way Pakastanis think.

If the people of Pakistan continue to fight against the Taliban then this is a win, win situation for them. At least they are not bowing down to their intimidation.

reading is fundamental:
"They really understand why the military came in," he said. "They want the Taliban out. They hate them, and they think they have destroyed this piece of heaven, which was Swat."

As a result of this, he said, the Pakistani military feels it has the support of the people for their operations.

Concerned American: Man, you have your head in the sand. Our country's primary threat is from Islamic terrorists. The Pakistani government has alot to lose if the Taliban and/or AlQaeda get control of the country. They need to keep the pressure on and with our help can finally defang and declaw the militant Muslim radicals. That would certainly make the region and the world safer. Fear mongers of course will try and scare people. Let us hope and pray that the government forces in Pakistan are successful.

Obama reaches out to the Muslims, travels through the Arab lands making speeches and posing for holy pictures. We see the response from the terrorists. A hotel favored by foreigners is blown up.

Obama's plan to make nice with Muslim world sure sounds nice, in theory. In practice, we see the result.

We naive Westerners think that the army onslaught shows that WE are winning.

The army could have done this a long, long time ago but postponed it till Hillary Clinton told Congress that they were "abdicating control of the region."

With that view, their army thought they might lose the territory permanently to the Americans along with their nukes.

The offensive meant that they could get money (for their nukes, not useful against the Taliban), F16s and night vision devices (not useful against the Taliban who don't bother taking cover of nightfall).

Nothing has changed. This is a play for time.

We're still dealing with the ISI that created the Taliban, an army that sold nukes to N. Korea, Iran and Libya and a country that has more madrassas and militants per capita in the Muslim world.

Wake the heck up, America.

All terrorists are not in the Middle East. I agree that it is really important to lower the temperature here.

Dr. Tiller's murderer predicted more attacks against abortion clinics. We do not need any more crazies running around with guns.

The Noise on Fox is very distorted and more than partisan, yet the commentators take no responsibility for the violence they help unleash. I do note that MSNBC nighttime commentators (Keith, Ed & Rachel) certainly have a liberal agenda but asking for investigations is not the same thing as inciting to riot!

Until the poverty and education in the region is addressed there will be a growth in the terrorist ranks. President Obama's attempt to show respect for Muslim people and their cultures is a good first step. Pakistan's military as important as it is to keeping the nation stable is overfunded while other important services fail.
