Drilling or mining for more fossil fuels is not a long term solution AND it simply continues to make the same old techno companies more profitable for the SHORT TERM. Their power clogs the system and they seek to stiffle innovation. The Oil and Coal industries must really love the GOPer Nopers!

Nuclear energy is almost a 3rd rail issue. Would Boehner and McConnell like some nice cooling ponds in their neightborhoods? I think not. The 1/2 life of some of the used nuclear fuel components is measureed in 100s or even 1000s of years. Unless we find a better way to store the spent fuel permamnently, there will not be another 100 reactors in the next 20 years, no way!

As the President has said we need new green technology. Tom Friedman from NYT makes this point in his book "Hot, Flat and Crowded".

What we really need is a paradigm shift, folks. Remember in the early 90s when the internet was a gleam in Al Gore's eye? In the last 15 years the net has given us several paradigm shifts.

I recall a time in the mid 90s when Visa and MC were fighting tooth and nail against online credit/debit processing. Not secure enough they said. Now I write one check a month for rent and pay for almost everything else online.

What will the new green tech be? Geothermal, Solar, Wind, Fusion, Hydrogen cars. The verdict is still out on the future as we have not yet invented it, YET!

The powers that be always resist change! That is how they conspire to keep their power. GM killed the electric car that would have saved them from bankruptsy.

The paradigm shift will come, the new tech will emerge. Right now in someone's garage the next Edison is inventing the solution. We have to provide for a climate that rewards innovation, not one that worships the past. Reagan and his ideas are dead!

Move on!
GOP: Dem energy plan is C.R.A.P.

Would we have expected anything less from the PARTY OF NO?
Terry, Disabled Vet, Des Moines, IA (

Are you insane. (i mean aside from their settlements and bombs and whatnot)

give me a break. all monotheistic religions claim theirs is the only true path to salvation, the only true religion, The only TRUE GOD.

the fact of the matter is that all religions are founded by men. men. not god, not anything else. men.

you are trying to say that Jews and Christians are the 'honorable', peaceful monotheistic faiths, and that Islam is the bastion of extremism. The Pro-life movement and their tactics show the truth that extremism is found in all religion, and from my observations it is religion that promotes extremism by preaching that their way, ideology, or beliefs are the only 'true' beliefs, and anyone disagreeing with those views is an infidel, therefore they 'don't really think like you and i do', or 'they don't see things the way you and i do', and therefore they aren't really people anyway... (recognize where i got these quotes from?). This is the first step in dehumanization, and the basis of justification for murder performed by all monotheistic faiths.

so spare us the slander of Muslims because 'christians and jews turn the other cheek', when its been shown that each group has its allotment of radical extremists giving a bad name to the whole.

my sympathies to all the families and friends of the individuals who have been killed by religious extremists of any faith, for whatever reason.

GOP: Dem energy plan is C.R.A.P.

What harm could possibly come from deregulating nuclear power plant construction? The blame does not belong to entertainers who are just an outlet for opinion, but on each and every one of us who live in this nation.

It is our responsibility because nations can do nothing without their people, and we are the ones who have let our moral values decay, have let our suns and daughters be raised in single parent homes questioning if they are loved and feeling alone and ignored for whatever reason, because we value hypocrisy and allow lies and spin to be used as wedges against our unity, we cling to our ideology in spite of the facts that compromise and moderation were the cornerstones of this republic being formed, because we will pass by someone on the street in need of help because it isn't our problem, because we place blame instead of finding solutions, and because we have allowed political and social apathy to turn our republic into a machine dominated by the power elite and special interest groups that use the populace and have expanded upon the negative aspects of capitalism by moving to the extreme end of no oversight and no responsibility.

look in the mirror and we all will find why our country is in this state, and until we pony up and affect change in our immediate communities, we will continue down the path of decadance, decay, and decline.

i'll leave you with a Quote from Terry Goodkind:
Wizard's First Rule: People are stupid; given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe it's true, or because they are afraid it might be true. People’s heads are full of knowledge, facts, and beliefs, and most of it is false, yet they think it all true. People are stupid; they can only rarely tell the difference between a lie and the truth, and yet they are confident they can, and so are all the easier to fool."
GOP: Dem energy plan is C.R.A.P.

Chris, IL - great minds think alike (and hone in alike, too!)

GOP: Dem energy plan is C.R.A.P.

The Republican bill, titled “The American Energy Act,” would bring down the costs by using various forms of renewable energy such as nuclear power and by building new refineries in order to up production of gasoline within the United States, according to GOP leaders.
======================================
If more refineries were needed should't the gas companies build them?
Sounds like more contributions being paid back.
If the government funds the building does it get the profits they generate? If you think that dependence on oil and coal is safe, maybe you should move to the coast and wait for the ice to melt. Granted - it isn't "green", meaning renewable, but it is a lot cleaner and may provide the bridge that we need to get off the oil before renewable technology is cost effective. The sun's energy equals about one kilowatt per square meter - more than enough to power the country. However, we can only harvest about 4% of that affordably. Not going to work. However, there are solar cells that can harvest up to 26% of that, but they are too expensive right now. The good side of the dem's plan is that it encourages the development of non-carbon technology. The bad side is that it is, like many of Obama's projects, a good example of not living within the country's means. Our kids will be footing that bill, and they have a huge tab already. I think that the answer is in the middle, with carbon credits and nuclear tech and solar and wind and... You get the picture. We should have learned the folly of dependence on a single energy source already.

GOP: Dem energy plan is C.R.A.P.

Chris, IL

If the second 100 don't melt the earth any more than the first 104, I'd be willing to take the chance and double the current 20% of our electricity that is generated safely by nuclear plants. My guess is that more modern plants would have increased generating capacity, so a mere doubling might be selling it a bit short.

It would also be a truly stimulative long term project involving a lot of good paying jobs in the development and construction phase as well as the long term operating phase.

And it would be reasonable, based on our geographic size and our population, compared to France which operates 69 nuclear power plants that generate 75% of its electricity needs.

If France can do it, why can't we?

My guess is that if Obama proposed constructing 100 nuclear plants over the next 20 years, it would be, in the eyes of the Obama faithful, tatamount to Kennedy landing a man on the moon and an eminently worthy project.

But this is a Republican idea so the kneejerk reaction is to effectively remove it from Obama's repetoire no matter how good it might be for the country, and placate the left wing environmental faction of the Democrat party.

Political self-interest wins the day, a too frequent occurrence.

GOP: Dem energy plan is C.R.A.P.

Domestic Energy Not In Any Legislation.

GOP: Dem energy plan is C.R.A.P.

My personal favorite -

PUMA -- Party Unity My Ass

GOP: Dem energy plan is C.R.A.P.

by streamlining a burdensome regulatory process and ensuring the recycling and safe storage of spent nuclear fuel,”

The media must have screwed up again. After all, we must have discovered a way to dispose of or at the very least, keep safe the nuclear waste all those plants will generate. And I know every republican on this board will immediately say to put those facilities in their neighborhood. After all, it must be safe, correct? And don't get me started on how much energy is used to build a Prius or the Insight just so some Birkenstock wearing lefty can feel good about himself.

Bear in mind, the progressive goal here is to artificially raise the price of commodities beyond where they normally would be under normal market conditions. Liberals/Progressives recognize that low commodity prices are the fuel (no pun intended) of capitalism.

GOP: Dem energy plan is C.R.A.P.

How about JBIAD ???

(John Boner is a DOPE)

Lonnie Steele, Pittsburgh: '...Japan and France can have nukes, manage the plants safely, and store spent fuel safely.
