Now THAT is a great idea.

It was very successful when we "streamlined regulation" for the financial industry and it only resulted in the largest banks requiring government intervention to prevent them from going belly up.

What harm could possibly come from deregulating nuclear power plant construction? It isn't like there are any inherent dangers to nuclear energy or anything (aside from Three Mile Island and Chernobyl that is).

So what they are looking at is more nuclear plants, more refineries, and more drilling. Sounds like a great way to end our dependence on oil and slow global warming!

The energy issue brings me back to the election when VP candidate Biden told the nation that Obama/Biden didn't support Clean coal....Later Obama said that was wrong and said they did--after all he didn't want to lose the Pennsyslvania and West Virginia coal voters. Then there was the GOP "drill, baby, drill" movement (to drill oil off-shore). Obama, who had balked at that, changed his lingo once polls started turning against him and the Dems and he included "off-shore" drilling in his list of items he would do. These are just more examples of how this man changes with the polling winds. Now what will he do with Cap and trade--wait to see what the polls say first and then decide? This from a man who promised "You'll ALWAYS know where I stand on an issue..." Will we?

These costs are attributed toward the inevitable lawsuits over the death and permanent disability that will be caused by the nuclear plants when they melt down. And then add another $300 quadrillion dollars over the next 50 years for relocating everyone in the US currently living near a shoreline that is less than 50 feet above sea level.

I got to those numbers using the same types of calculations the GOP uses to prove how bad Democratic plans are.

The GOPers are forever looking backward. Drilling or mining for more fossil fuels is not a long term solution AND it simply continues to make the same old techno companies more profitable for the SHORT TERM. Their power clogs the system and they seek to stiffle innovation. The Oil and Coal industries must really love the GOPer Nopers!

Nuclear energy is almost a 3rd rail issue. Would Boehner and McConnell like some nice cooling ponds in their neightborhoods? I think not. The 1/2 life of some of the used nuclear fuel components is measureed in 100s or even 1000s of years. Unless we find a better way to store the spent fuel permamnently, there will not be another 100 reactors in the next 20 years, no way!

As the President has said we need new green technology. Tom Friedman from NYT makes this point in his book "Hot, Flat and Crowded".

What we really need is a paradigm shift, folks. Remember in the early 90s when the internet was a gleam in Al Gore's eye? In the last 15 years the net has given us several paradigm shifts.

I recall a time in the mid 90s when Visa and MC were fighting tooth and nail against online credit/debit processing. Not secure enough they said. Now I write one check a month for rent and pay for almost everything else online.

What will the new green tech be? Geothermal, Solar, Wind, Fusion, Hydrogen cars. The verdict is still out on the future as we have not yet invented it, YET!

The powers that be always resist change! That is how they conspire to keep their power. GM killed the electric car that would have saved them from bankruptsy.

The paradigm shift will come, the new tech will emerge. Right now in someone's garage the next Edison is inventing the solution. We have to provide for a climate that rewards innovation, not one that worships the past. Reagan and his ideas are dead!

--I don't like the legislative acronyms (strongly despise?). From the makers of the P.A.T.R.I.O.T. act. Let them sell the bills on their merits. While the prop. system of CA is crazy, the numbering system is good and should be enacted federally. These acronyms more often tend to mask what a piece of legislation really does. Another example would be (and I don't remember the name) something like the tax simplification act, which really mean the Accountant Job Security Act. You know, I will break my policy against stupid computer/teenage jingo and say WFT?!?!

In 2002 (latest year I could easily find data showing emissions by country), the US was the largest source of CO2. Here are some stats (in million tons per year):

US - 5,773
China - 3,783
Russian - 1,534
Japan - 1,213
India - 1,106

Even factoring in the growth of China (I believe China has passed us) and India, your statement is completely without basis.

On a per capita basis, the US is even worse. We emit almost 7 times more per capita than China and almost 20 times more per capita than India.

France and Japan have proven that nuclear power can be done, and safely. If you think that dependence on oil and coal is safe, maybe you should move to the coast and wait for the ice to melt. Granted - it isn't "green", meaning renewable, but it is a lot cleaner and may provide the bridge that we need to get off the oil before renewable technology is cost effective. The sun's energy equals about one kilowatt per square meter - more than enough to power the country. However, we can only harvest about 4% of that affordably. Not going to work. However, there are solar cells that can harvest up to 26% of that, but they are too expensive right now. The good side of the dem's plan is that it encourages the development of non-carbon technology. The bad side is that it is, like many of Obama's projects, a good example of not living within the country's means. Our kids will be footing that bill, and they have a huge tab already. I think that the answer is in the middle, with carbon credits and nuclear tech and solar and wind and... You get the picture. We should have learned the folly of dependence on a single energy source already.

If the second 100 don't melt the earth any more than the first 104, I'd be willing to take the chance and double the current 20% of our electricity that is generated safely by nuclear plants. My guess is that more modern plants would have increased generating capacity, so a mere doubling might be selling it a bit short.

It would also be a truly stimulative long term project involving a lot of good paying jobs in the development and construction phase as well as the long term operating phase.

And it would be reasonable, based on our geographic size and our population, compared to France which operates 69 nuclear power plants that generate 75% of its electricity needs.

If France can do it, why can't we?

My guess is that if Obama proposed constructing 100 nuclear plants over the next 20 years, it would be, in the eyes of the Obama faithful, tatamount to Kennedy landing a man on the moon and an eminently worthy project.

But this is a Republican idea so the kneejerk reaction is to effectively remove it from Obama's repetoire no matter how good it might be for the country, and placate the left wing environmental faction of the Democrat party.

Political self-interest wins the day, a too frequent occurrence.

People in this country are so stupid it hurts. For those that have ZERO memory left, let's review:

Republican policy is what gave us this great economy in a total shambles. Healthcare costs rise far above the rate of inflation, gas is going back up, banks won't lend money, the US auto industry is in the tank, we are in 2 wars, with more on the horizon thanks to 8 years of neglect at the hands of Bushie & Co., the only think that I can think off that hasn't gone wrong is that the sky isn't falling.....yet.

6 years of Republican rule from 2000-2006 re-wrote the face of this country, from the "last great superpower" to the greatest decline in the US Economy since the Great Depression. Republicans suggest that more tax cuts for the rich are the only solution....lol.

Anyone who thinks going back to the policies that got us here, is a solution, is so utterly retarded, I wish they would just 'off' themselves and save us the hassle of having to listen to their ignorant ideas.

The idea that Republicans NOW (all of the sudden) stand for fiscal discipline is too too funny. The Republican tax cuts in Bush's first term, which went mostly to people making over $250,000 per year, cost us $1.8 trillion. And how much of that $1.8 trillion has trickled down? None, it got lost in the stock market collapse instead.

And then they want to deregulate the Nuclear Energy Industry as a solution?!?!?!? Ever heard of "spent fuel rods"....yeah, they are radioactive with a half life of 10,000 years. Where are you going to "cleanly" store that crap?!?!?!?

Same old policies they always offer. We need REAL Healthcare reform, REAL Energy reform, and obviously, REAL social reform.....starting with giving people a good enough education so they can see thru the crap that is the Republican lie.

Yeah, Newt isn't a "citizen of the world", even though Reagan was.....these people are clueless and grasping at straws. The Republican party is dead, and will go the way of the party before them….the Whigs.
