There is no small amount of irony - and no bucket of sarcasm large enough to point out the chicken littles everywhere. Jonathon, Flint - why do you blame the unions and not GM Management?

This is the hypocrisy, Bush's 2nd stimulus was Corporate Welfare to Banks and Insurance Companies. And get this - zero forced accountability.

A small portion of money was "loaned" to GM in September. The only 'preconditioned' money that I can recall from that $800Billion boondoggle in October. All President Obama attempted to do with GM was level the playing field and get an understanding of what if anything they planned to do differently. If you will recall, GM has been held to a completely different standard of accountability and true to the Repub form - it must be the unions fault. You know there was a Corporate President and an entire board of direcotrs that made the decisions that caused GM's failure. How big was the union's seat at the decision making table?

So quit with the welfare scare tactics. Lots of money went to lots of less 'deserving' entities and we will never know the extent of it.

PS. Athena, I think they covered on this site yesterday a non-precedent of All-Star ceremonially presidential first pitches.

Barry is on track to pushing the deficit for the year to $2 trillion dollars. That's right 2 trillion dollars, in one year. That would be 5 times more then the hated Bush had in deficitspending last year. Why is it going to be so much more then the predicted $1.8 trillion? Because Obama's plans have so stifled the job market that the government will take in a lot less tax revenue then it initially planned for.

God, I wish my fellow Republicans would give it a break on the stimulus for right now. I didn't agree with it, but it's happened and let's let it work it's course.

Clara - both GM management and unions share blame; I'd personally put more on the unions only because excessive work rules make rapid changes impossible. I think GM had to mortgage the farm on high margin SUVs and trucks because they couldn't make money on smaller cars because of costs.

The foreign car makers in the South don't have excessive union problems. Toyota plants have two classes of employees per their handbook - production and supervisor. The UAW will never agree to being simple because they're stuck in the days when factories were far more dangerous and run by robber barons.

Also, please cut out with Obie remarks and teleprompter jokes. They make the whole rest of your argument seem immature, too. How many of you take Eric in Salinas seriously?

The economy has been going south since the 1980's. Until recently we, the people, have been stuck on stupid. We worried more about weapons of mass destruction ( distraction, actually ) that didn't exist. We were told we were fighting to get the people who planned 9/11. We vowed to be patriotic. We hoped that "Mission Accomplished" was true. ( It wasn't). We were so wrapped up in "whatevers" and "ifs" that we didn't look right in front of us. We never saw the tanking economy. And now we expect everything to be better NOW? Right this minute?

It's going to take time. Besides, we are moving to new jobs - green technology. If we don't do it now, China will.

NPR this morning interviewed a businessman who wants money to open a car battery factory. He said all the car batteries now are made in Korea. Nice. So, he said, some people who won't move to green jobs would like to see us move from dependency on foreign oil to dependency on green technology from Korea.

Guess a lot of us are still stuck on stupid.

By the way - nothing I write gets posted. There are more people in the world besides the "regulars."

This "accepting of responsibility" (appears humble, right?) reminds me of when Obama defended and defended Tom Daschle as his nominee for Health Secretary despite the revelations of his owing over one hundred thousand dollars in taxes for limousine rides. Obama was stern and said Daschle was his guy and then only after Daschle removed himself from consideration and public opinion turned against Obama did he quickly go network to network "apologizing" and "taking responsibility". This is a man who talks of "transparency" and "new politics" and tries to use a fake humility to distinguish himself from other politicians. But he's a manipulation machine. This has been proven by the fact that his town hall meetings and press conferences are controlled like no other previous administation (just ask liberal leaning press folks like Helen Thomas and Chip Reid who spoke out on this). Clearly today's speech was a new strategy he got from David Plouffe who was on the airplane with him (and you liberals thought Karl Rove controlled "W"?). One last point on education, if he's serious about it, why not support successful charter schools like in Washington DC????? Or is he too tied to the NEA (another of his pet special interest groups) to promote charter schools?

From the posts I'm reading here, there is nothing, absolutely NOTHING the president can do to please some of the right wing nuts on this site, in congress, or any where for that matter. Like Fiesty said, you just can't fix stupid. You guys are like a broken record, just repeating the same old tired talking points no matter what the President says. Well, I got news for ya.... there are a majority of people in this country that wanted a new beginning and wanted change that makes sense. We're getting there, but it takes time. Rome wasn't built in a day, and fixing the last 8 years, or better yet, 20 of the last 28 years is gonna take a little bit more than 5 months. How 'bout you guys get back to us around Nov 2010. We'll let you know what the majority thinks once again. And then we'll go from there....

The Stimulus plan has been in effect less than six months. It is not only unrealistic to expect it to be effective in creating jobs in so short of an amount of time, it borders on just plain stupid.

Now, had the money just come gushing forth in a giant flood, the opposition would be whining just as loudly, but the whining would have been about wasteful spending and graft in the system, and any number of other maladies.

As to whether or not this economy is Obama's responsibility, it is important to remember that Obama didn't even have the numbers on Bush's final quarter in office until some weeks after he took over. Obama's first budget won't start until October first of this year. In the meantime, several initiatives are in the works or already underway.

So, while Obama is bravely taking responsibility for fixing this economy, there is no way that he can be blamed for it just six months into office.

And, while the John Boners of the nation want to bitch and moan about everything being Obama's fault no matter what he actually does, the sane part of the nation is going to have to be a little more patient before passing judgment. The problems that we face are years in the making, and will not be solved in a few months.

Nor are they likely to be solved by more tax cuts for the wealthiest American's. We've tried that since Reagan, and we've seen the results: A real Laffer, if it weren't so serious.

Even if it really isn't his fault,he's the top guy, the ceo, the big cheese, the top chief, head honcho and taking the blame comes with the job.
