The Republicans should vote for Sotomayor. It's likely that she's more conservative than Souter. This wasn't worth the fight. The Republicans played this well. Ask the hard questions that your constituents demand, be respectful and confirm her. The addition of Sotomayor does nothing to shift the Supreme Court.

We just need the other justices to hang in there for three more years.

You are very wrong that unions are killing manufacturing in the US. What is causing US manufacturing to grow less slowly than the rest of the world is that basic labor is far cheaper outside the US. That is not unions, but the fact that Americans won't work for what people in India and China will work for. In 2005, average monthly wages in India were $25!!!

Looks like some of the party of sore losers are going to vote for Sotomayor because they don't want to antagonize people of color. I'm sure that Lugar will come under attack from that rabid Lush Limburger for his smart decision to vote for her confirmation.

I think that a large part of the problem is the dual tension between wanting to spend the money quickly and wanting to spend the money wisely.

We all want it spent faster, but not so fast that it is stolen from us like much of the TARP money was.

As a side note:

Alan, are you saying that you agree that a stimulus package was needed to spur the economy and provide relief to those who have already lost their jobs?

I ask because it seems that many of the same folks who advocated NO stimulus are now complaining about the rate that the stimulus money is being allocated.

Isn't that trying to have your cake and eat it too?

I agree with Luger. Don't drop over with shock.

The criteria for approving the nominations of justices is perfectly clear-is the person qualified; does the person have a clear understanding of the constitution; is the person fair and unbiased.

I would be unwilling to have my life and career be judged on the basis of one opinion; I don't believe it is fair to judge Judge Sotomayor based on the Ricci case. I am more concerned that she believes that some of the articles of the Bill of Rights do not apply to the states; hopefully, the other 8 justices on the Court will pursuade her otherwise.

I do not believe that the Obama standard for approving nominations should EVER be used by the Senate. I don't really care what is in the Justices 'hearts', I care what is in their HEADS.

That is the standard that should be used. By that standard, she should be confirmed.

Never thought I would be saying this BUT your RIGHT in you comments above with the exception of the hard questions... bringing up 'sound bytes' from years past over & over doesn't count as hard questions in my book! After all the Repub's were the ones that keep trying the stall tactics because they wanted more time to review her case files...and in the end the resorted to just played more of the Gotcha questions than anything else!

You may also be right on her 'leanings'... I'm not convinced she's a 'left' as I would of perferred but I'm willing to take my chances...

As for the respect thing... not so much... they came across as mean & petty and that is going to cost them dearly with the Woman & Latino votes in future elections! If they want to continue on the path of shrinking their 'base'... Go FOR it! That's good news for us lefties!

Other than that they should pick their battles more carefully and stop with the NO to EVERYTHING!

I find your lack of knowledge regarding Constitutional law to be profoundly disturbing. Please, point out to me which section of the Constitution even mentions the Federal Reserve, let alone bans full audits of it.

Actually, don't bother, because I can show you exactly where it says that such an action IS constitutional: Article I, Section 8.

At the very least, it's good to see you showing your true colors. I suspected the whole "government transparency" thing was a scam. Let's just hope Obama isn't a hypocrite as well.

Agree with much on your post, but most there are section of the US Constitution that apply ony to Congress making no law. The case of the DC is much different in that the US Constitution (Article I section 9) specifically provides that the Congress has exclusive legislation rights over that area. So what may be unconstitional in DC may not be for the rest of the US.
