Ironically, the Sandy Berger case seems to have set a trend for the Bush Administration as far as "reasonableness".

With 208 Democratically controlled investigations currently going on, this may become a matter of routine soon.

Sandy Burger. Stole secret documents, destroyed some, lied to investigators, lied to 9/11 Commission. Got probation and a three year suspension of his security clearances.

Scooter Libby, involved in a dispute over a non-criminal action, gets jammed by reporters covering their own tails and gets nailed by a jury headed up by one of the media's own as foreman. Despite evidence that he wasn't the source of the subject of the entire investigation, he gets to be punished by those who couldn't get to Bush himself.

Scooter should be granted a ranch in Wyoming to retire and get away from these people.

This is a great COMPROMISE, the President COULD have pardoned Mr. Liby, but chose to let the legalities proceed. To this end, I pray that Mr. Libby will on appeal, be able to demonstrate the unfairness of the sentence on two reasons, 1. he was not allowed to demonstrate in court that MS Plame did not merit the protecton(s) of the law ... because the Judge said that was not an issue in this case, only to make it an issue on his reason(s) for such a hard sentence. and 2. That Mr. Fitzgerald violated his commission every day he worked after his learning of the actual source of the leak, and that it was not from within the White House.

In readding material on this case, it can be clearly demonstrated that many of the witnesses against Mr. Libby had the same kinds of difficulty with memory and fact as did Mr. Libby, only they were not on trial.

The whole Plame thing was a fiasco, because her CIA affiliation was widely known before Scooter even was involved. Victoria Toensing, who was a co-author of the legislation was very clear to point out that Plame did not meet the requirements to be called 'covert'. Besides, she drove to Langley every day from her home right up through the front gates. Anyone who wanted to sit outside the gates with a camera could have photographed her arriving at work every day. Plame and Wilson should be the ones being prosecuted for conspiracy and treason. Everyone forgot a very important point here. When Cheney, Libby, Bush and this merry band of theives outed Plame they ALSO outed every single person she EVER came in contact with. That means that if she patiently built a network of informants (something intelligence operatives are supposed to do) their covers were blown too! Due to national security reasons we will probably never know how much this little burst of idiocy cost America in intelligence assets.

This pardon also sends the wrong message to the people who work in our intelligence community. This says that you can be outed at any time and nothing will come of it. Kind of cheapens working for the FBI, CIA and NSA.

Let's say you completely believe the worst of the worst, and that Scooter was fed information to leak. Ok, he was still fed it by someone else. Let's say you believe the best case scenario for Libby and that he wasn't fully aware what he was leaking was protected. In either case, Libby is =at worst= a pawn who took a fall, or at best, a guy who made a terrible mistake unknowingly. But it's hard to believe that Libby intentionally, with malice, knew and planned the action and conducted it on his own. I've never heard anyone say that. In that light, Libby was going to jail to take the fall for someone else. The pardon of Libby is just, it basically puts the onus of the situation on the executive branch, where it is deserved, rather then a pawn who took a fall.

Uhm. To those of you who have been discussing the "outing" of Valerie Plame...

She was no longer an active field agent of the CIA. There are a certain number of years you have after you leave, depending upon your clearance, that it is taboo to mention the fact that you were in the CIA. The statute of limitations on that had LONG run out with Valerie. Most everybody in Washington DC knew she had worked for the CIA. It was no secret.

And for those howling for Scooter Libby's blood, for being convicted in a politically motivated witch hunt... what about Sandy "The Shredder" Berger? What she did was far worse, and most likely hid more criminal activity than you could shake a stick at, which occurred under the Clinton administration.

I don't lock step with any particular political affiliation currently, and I definitely don't agree with our current administration on a good many things, but at least they had the sense to see through the sham that this whole non-crime was, and remove the penalty.

For the people who think the Libby conviction was politically motivated, do you want to go on record as saying the head of the CIA, George Tenet, who asked the Justice Dept to investigate the leak, is a "liberal"? Look how many of the previous comments by liberals blame Libby for revealing Valerie Plame being a CIA agent. That was NOT the case, it was Richard Armitage! The case began after Novak revealed the Valerie info and then when Libby's name came up, the liberal media immediately pounced on that (since he was close to VP Cheeny, who they dislike because he makes them look like fools). The media in their initial accusations of reporting Libby as probably being the source, then when it was revaled that Armitage leaked the info to Novak, made sure that they covered that up as much as they could. Since your leftwing liberal Democrats believe everything they see on NBC and CNN, they never knew the truth. Thank God for talk radio who revealed that Libby was not the one. But now the Special Prosecutor and the media were so far along, they had no choice but to pursue their agenda and it ended up where Libby was guilty of not remembering certain conversations he had in his office, which in itself should not have even gone to court.
The Democratic Party controls the NY/LA media, that media then controls and influences their herd of liberals who watch only them and have no clue what's going on, resulting in actually influencing votes, as we saw in the 2006 election when they got Democrats elected.

One rule of thumb. A real conservative is well-read, worldly, articulate, and rational. Don't debase and embarrass conservatives with this kind of vile rhetoric. Even if true, it is irrelevant. Show some intellectual discipline.

The know-nothing, faith-based fascists masquerading as conservatives have probably succeeded in destroying Regan's legacy. I would include Bush Junior in this charaterization. He brought us unneccesary war, destroyed our military and massively enlarged the federal bureaucracy. Big government is antithetical to conservative principles, as I hope you are aware. His father was a great man. He is a misguided, impetuous, spoiled prince.

Libby's sentence should not have been touched by Bush, simply because Libby is a close Bush associate. Bush does not understand the law sufficiently to interfere in its administration, particularly when it applies to his close associates convicted of lying under oath. Equal justice, as previous posts indicate, is a core conservative principle.

This discussion depresses me, as I find myself siding with democratic posters. We are supposed to believe Thompson was our only hope, but based on true conservative principles I find myself more in agreement with Senator Obama's statement on this matter than Thompson's.

This whole leak case was a witch hunt. Plame's work as a CIA operative was a secret to the desperate house wives in her New England yuppy community, but was no secret on capital hill. General Paul Valelly confirmed that Joe Wilson told anyone who would listen about his wife's former work as a CIA official cover opperative. Anyone who read two paragraphs of non-NYT coverage should know this. I don't know if Scooter lied, forgot, or thought he had to leave out info that he was not cleared to give to civilian entities (yes, there is such info called classified), but a jury found him guilty and I respect that. What I do not respect is the allowance of a leak investigation for the supposed Plame leak. The administration should have paraded the long list of capital hill whitnesses who Plame and her husband Wilson told everything to. I would hate for the NYT to publish that I was a spy, but if I let it become common knowledge and the person who told a newspaper just happened to be someone with a security clearance, it would still be my fault. I think it would be easy for a prosecutor to get anyone to contradict on the stand (from memory) something that he has in print, which would give him perjury by the letter of the law. It is for a jury to determine which it is and they said guilty. I think the pardon is appropriate, but it would have been more appropriate for the Bush administration to nip this whole case in the bud and take the firestorm for telling the unpopular truth. The real lie was Bush trying to act like he took this "leak" seriously when their was no leak.

Valerie Plame was indeed covert and Fitzgerald submitted proof of it at Libby's sentencing, to include the passports, airline tickets and ID's with assumed names that she used when she traved. That's one of the reasons why the judge gave Libby jailtime to beging with (Albeit, not enough)
Not only that, but Plame herself testified at a congressional hearing recently, that she was covert. To date she has not been charged with perjury.

The reason Fitzgerald didn't pursue charges against Armitage is because Armitage (supposedly) didn't know she was covert.
Furthermore, there were at least four people who leaked Plame's name to the Washington press corps, Armitage wasnt the only one.
Ari Fleischer (who was granted immunity from prosecution in exchange for his testimony) was one, Karl Rove was another (why he wasn't prosecuted I don't know, except that Fitz was very careful to charge only what he could conclusively prove). Libby was a third "source", and of course Armitage who had the balls to admit to it.
The commutation of Libby's sentence stinks. Even Paris Hilton had to go to jail for driving without a license. But Libby gets off for outing a C.I.A. operative, and lying to federal prosecutors?
I wonder how this makes all the people who've served, or are currently serving as undercover operatives in our intelligence services feel. (?)
This is far, far worse than fibbing about a B.J., and just as bad as what the Nixon crew did during Watergate. It's purely Un-American and I hope the voting public remembers this for a very long time.

I would agree with Fred Thompson on this. That does not mean however that Libby's trial was far from a fair non partisan affair. after looking at the lists of people pardoned by Clinton and by Bush, I couldn't help but notice that the majority of Clinton's pardons do not list the crimes involved. On the flipside, almost every entry for people pardoned by Bush does have the crime listed on wikipedia. Another move by the Democratic spin doctors who only want you to see one side of the story, not what they do. It proves that the media for the most part is controlled by the liberals, as in CNN the Clinton News Network.

I'm a bit upset with the President and his decision here. Lots of folks here are comparing Libby and Clinton, but you have to remember that plenty of the same senators applauding Libby's release now were all but ready to put Clinton onto the chopping block not too far back. Completely doing away with the prison sentence is a bit much here.

Not aware of all the details, but that every crime deserves a punishment. The question is whether the President can do what he did - commute. The answer is yes, the President can commute a sentence for the public good.

I just don't know if a commutation of Scooter Libbey's entence really serves any public good. I belive that the commutation of Scooter's sentence serves the President specifically. I believe this is because Scooter has something on all of these guys.

I belive that Scooter was sent to court being told, "Don't worry, we got your back." Fred Thompson is falling lock-step with the present administration which is really wrong.

I'm open minded and I vote my conscience and I can not find 1 republican I feel comfortable with. Fred was my last hope.

The Republicans need to look at history and see what Nikita Khrushchev did on February 25, 1956 regarding Stalin. Republicans need not only distance themselves from a failed administration, but call it for what is.

What it is, in the view of many Americans, is that the Bush administration is both corrupt and misguided. The administration has expended hundreds of billions of dollars chasing windmills in Iraq, not counting the loss of lives, and the corruption.............well that is self-evident.

Until somebody from the Republican side stands up and utters the words, "The king has no clothes!" the Republicans will loose in November.

As a retired peace officer and a retired military person, I stand behind our president and it's obvious that Fred Thompson does as well. I'm a 65 year old senior at NCSU, and I was charged with disorderly conduct for a "finger gesture" protest to a Raleigh Police Officer's misconduct for which I was adjudicated and fined by NC judge running for re-election.
