I think the press secretary was Scott McClellan at the time, but when queried by the press on why war was so urgent then, and not in August, his reply was, "You don't launch a new product before Labor Day." Perhaps Fred Thompson is borrowing a page from the same playbook.

Indendent, take a look at the man's history. The best descriptive term used for him is a "mainstream, Reaganite conservative." I'm an independent conservative, also from Texas and I'm totally jazzed about Thompson running. Having been extremely involved in Texas' last gubernatorial race for one of the independent republicans who ran, I would love to support Fred Thompson. I think he's probably the only politician with the spine to stand up to both political machines, and do what's best for the country rather than special interests, or give in to the far left bleeding heart liberals when someone's tail needs to be kicked.

Well, CMattox, I have checked out the stuff on Mr. Thompson which led to my question about why anyone should vote for him. He was known at the "lazy" one and his votes show why. No real representation. They are all over the map. Also, I can't get past his Watergate stuff and his lobbying after leaving office.

Another note..I still don't understand the fascination with Reaganism. Granted I'm under 30 so my perspective may be different. To me he was just another typical politician who managed for the most part to please the electorate(despite Reaganomics and Iran Contra) and weather the Cold War. If you're going to vote for someone..vote for someone on their own merit and track record and not b/c they seem similar to another politician. In that fact you are not voting FOR your candidate but in the memory of another. Right now, I believe any combination of the top three dem candidates will beat any of the combos of the top three or four GOP frontrunners.

Speaking as someone from Tennessee, Fred was mostly an empty suit as a senator. The only big item on his agenda was term limits (remember that, GOP??) and when the GOP dropped that part of the Contract on America, Sen Thompson was mostly a now show, missing a lot of votes.

Look Fred isn't a bad guy, but he is not the parts he has played in movies and TV.

In getting elected to the Senate, He would drive up in a pick up truck and dispense some down home wisdom with the folks at the store, and drive off in his truck.

The funny part is, He didn't own the truck and he didn't drive at all except for photo ops and appearances. Most of the time, he drove his cadillac most of the way there, his workers took the truck off the trailer it was hauled in , and then he drove it to the appearance.

Fred is known for his love of expensive Cuban cigars and fancy meals, but you sure didn't see that in his local appearances.

Fred is not an outsider to DC, He sold his Tennessee home soon after he left the senate, and lived in New York and DC working as a lobbyist.

The Dems only have to take one state more than they did in 2004 to get the white house. Sorry , but I dont think Fred is one that can keep Ohio, or Florida on any of the in play states the Dems need for a win.

The timing of his announcement might have to do with more than one issue including his Law & Order (did you know Rudy also appeared on Law & Order to introduce Dianne Wiest?) residuals, the timing of some candidate debate, the folding of some of the other GOP candidates and a belief that he may inherit those voters and their money, the General's report on Iraq and a belief that by "not running yet" the speculation about him generates publicity that doesn't cost him any campaign dollars. If Fred Thompson's strategy is successful, maybe in subsequent presidential elections, all candidates will wait longer to declare.

You are correct that you need to keep an eye on your pension fund, or any fund of yours for that matter, to see how it is invested, and that it is managed to your particular needs. We only need to look as far as Enron to see the truth in that statement. People do need to be engaged and to monitor their investments. Don't expect others to do it for you. If your pension fund or 401k is invested heavily in your companies stock, you have a problem. Make certain they are both diversified.
