What a tool Novak is. I've never had any respect for him anyway but this just confirms my disgust. Re his statement that Plame wasn't covert at the time: Not what the CIA says and they have the records to prove it. People think that outing her was a single task when in fact it resulted in shutting down a whole organization that, I believe, was targeted toward gaining info on Iran. Pity - we surely could use that info now.

Did Fitzgerald lie when he released his discovery information during the sentencing portion of Libby's trial that showed Plame had travelled on missions within 5 years before her outing. Did the CIA lie when they entered into the congressional record Plame's status of being covert, a NOC, and classified. The Aldridge Aimes claim was looked into by Fitz, and he determined it wasn't true.

And here's another question, who told Novakula about Brewster-Jennings, a CIA front company, which he wrote about in a second article. That would have destroyed the cover of other CIA operatives, and their cultivated sources. I'm quite sure most of Plame's sources were executed, as spying yields the ultimate penalty in all countries, including America.

I would love the see the damage assessment report. I also vaguely remember, around the time Plame was outted, seeing a report on TV, by CNN, about some americans found dead in Pakistan but I don't remember any additional reporting and have not been able to find any information thru Google. The reason I mention it is because Pakistan is not a tourist destination, so if some americans died their they would have to be charity workers, government official, or businessmen. We know that Plame and others work in the Iraq, Iran, and Pakistan regions. Either way, it should have been a major story.

A special prosecutor did not indict anyone for a crime in the leaking of Val's name, so it's safe to assume no law was broken in that regard. The fact that Val would send her idiot husband on a fact finding mission was sufficient justification for a real reporter to think there might be a story there.
That her idiot husband would tell everyone he was sent to Niger by the vice president and then tell two different stories to the Senate and the New York Times should have led any reporter (even one from the New York Times) to think there was something to investigate.

As a middle of the road conservative, I'd like to make a couple of points: 1)some Conservatives love to say liberals have a sliding scale of right and wrong, yet the conservative viewpoints I see here seem pretty ambiguous. The CIA said she was covert--Novak gets to say otherwise? Plus, let's not ignore the bigger treason--he outed Brewster-Jennings, too, a front company that other agents were using as THEIR cover. Morel is quite right--we haven't been told how much damage these two revelations have done to our intelligence, but it's not hard to guess that other, innocent people, who were contacts for Plame or other CIA operatives using that company as cover were put at risk. It's very possible this contributed to our present shambles of an intelligence arm today. I have a hard time viewing that as anyting but irresponsible, possibly treasonous behavior, especially when we need eyes and ears in the part of the world Plame worked for the CIA.
2)Dave, in TN makes the term liberal synonomous with treason, and states it's funny to think of them caring about the fate of a CIA agent. Reasonable people might understand that just as there are religious fanatics and totalitarian corporate shills among conservatives, there are also true patriots among the liberals, who genuinely believe in the laws of our land. Am I the only conservative left who remembers it was dissent that created the United States, that a vocal minority of people in this country decided they weren't going to be good subjects and told what to pay, what to say and what to read by any King? Now someone can read anything you care to write, listen to your phone conversations, and go through your financial files without your knowledge, all in the name of "security." This is not the land of the Free I remember.
3) To Noe Bullship--Joseph Wilson and Valerie Plame worked honorably for the government for many years. He happened to find something out which made statements by our heads of State a lie. (It was a lie--I presume we can agree on that.) He told them it wasn't true that Iraq tried to buy uranium. The VP didn't like that result, so his gophers responded by outing his wife as a CIA agent. Wilson was a little put out by someone going after his wife. For that, you think he should be killed--euthanized, I believe you said. You think that's a healthy view? You should perhaps work on winding down a little.
4) Not on the subject, but re-reading this, I'm sure the rabid think I couldn't possibly be a conservative, so how about this--I'm tired of hearing we can't throw 11 million illegals out of this country, we've got 11 million unemployed and they would damn well take the jobs if you stopped doling out cash to them for nothing. I don't believe there's any reason Charlie Manson and people like him should be locked up for life, when there are perfectly good ways of ending theirs. I don't think the government should spend more than they take in, I would be all for a flat tax on earnings, and Jesus and I get along just fine. And I would love to see reasonable responses to articles like this, instead of postings that foam from the mouth.

Do I believe the organization in the know who made legally bound truthful statements, or a partisan flamethrower who admits to happily destroying the career of a government employee? Second, Fitzgerald was very clear that Libby was blocking further investigation into who leaked the name. Libby was charged with "obstruction of justice." Duh. He said it in his statements, and in the court record. It's common for prosecutors not to charged certain suspected in order to get at bigger fish.

But of course this info is all readily available to people who really want to understand it, as opposed to the conservative posters here who are just looking for other 29 percenters to echo their delusions and lame ad hominim attacks.

BTW, the stuff about liberals and progressives not appreciating the CIA is pretty comical. I'm sorry some conservatives can't tell the difference between the good people who work at a government agency, and the sometimes sordid ends they are used for. Glad I can.
