Hopefully when it goes to one on one, there will be serious questions instead of las Vegas style shows the democrats put on. That youtube thing was cute, but it has no place in American politics. Makes us look like we have truly lost our minds. How can Hillary or Obama be president and the rest of the world take us seriously when you are asked questions by a snowball????

Looking at the big picture, what did the YouTube debate actually produce for the Dems? How did this debate classify the character of the candidates? And how can any of the debate questions be considered "hard questions?"

1) The debate spurred a skirmish between Obama and Clinton, which has resulted in regurgitated political words. Candidates simply refined their ability to answer questions without answering questions - all in the name of pleasing their audience. There was no clear winner and no shining moment(s).

2) The debate would be old news by now had it not been for the next day scramble to attack, defend, or define the single particular question. The only true colors that were revealed came out of the political arguement between Obama and HRC. The Clinton campaign team showed that they are willing to go to whatever measures are necessary in order to secure a vote, while Obama stood strong through the waves of Clinton's attacks. HRC picked a fight over nonsense and Obama has driven it down her throat.

3) Although the questions come from everyday people (with the exceptions of the snowman and gun nutjob), they are single minded and overlook how that particular issue fits into the giant puzzle of issues riddling Washington. Not to undermind those who submitted questions, but even if you could ask the most profound "hard question" that would ACTUALLY bring about substancial change, do you really think 60 seconds of response time would produce that profound change?

I'm pretty sure that HRC and Edwards were caught on an open mic recently describing how they wanted a debate among a smaller group to avoid the 60 second substance lacking answers.

Republicans should refrain from lowering themselves to this level. It is merely a show to put on for viewers. I don't want to see what kind of a front a politician can put on, I want to hear a solution that is POSSIBLE. If the only thing this would produce is the ability to pick a political fight with another candidate, I say leave it to the Dems. Even with America seeking change, they are unable to pull themselves together for the good of the country and would rather pick eachother apart. Only one of them will move on to the next round and the weaknesses that their arguements exposed will surely be used against them in later rounds.

Whatsa matter, are the Republican candidates afraid to answer questions not submitted in advance by their protective pundit class or carefully prescreened questions from a carefully prescreened audience? These are the guys that will supposedly tear the eventual Democratic nominee to shreds in the general election. If they won't get out of the playpen to mix with the kids in the schoolyard they don't stand a chance. You only need to know 2 things about the eventual GOP cadidate. The base won't tolerate any change in how the insane "Global War on Terror" is manged. The base won't tolerate any deviation from our steady march toward an authoritarian police state with zero accountability to the unwashed electorate. The GOP ticket will be a Bush/Cheney continuation because the primary voters support what they're doing. The public is finally starting to wake up and discover they've been deceived by the entire Republican party. That ought to finish them off in the '08 election.

JK I have not heard a single answer from the GOP candidates that wasn't in a prepared speach, or wasn't a patented answer. Anything outside of that was within the company of pundits...delivering the same lines Bush has repeated over the years. Even their debates have been various degress of Bush policy repeated. The Hillary, Obama debate actually served me well b/c I got to see the difference btw them further...a real debate of divergent ideas. On the GOP side there seems to be a p*ssing match over who is and isn't a conservative, a christian, or abortion. They can't get outside of their box for one second. And I dare say that niether party has been unified (unless it's self preservation) for the good of the country for quite awhile.

Jerry/Maybe some of the questions that were sent in would be considered odd(some were even funny), but they would not be put on for the debate. The questions that were presented were honest questions from Americans(you remember who they are, don't you?). Some of these questions could have come from someone who has not made up there mind as to who they are going to vote for, or even if they are going to go with a Democratic or Republican candidate, so calling them all "Freaks" is in very poor taste, even for you.

CJ I think we are on common ground here. I never said I've heard substance from GOP's. My point is that the YouTube debate is not the place to find it, and it has served only as opportunity to further divide a party. What would motivate the GOP's to jump through the same loops and ring the same bells the Dem's did - just to put on a show for an audience? I pay people for that kind of entertainment, not elect them.

I agree that both parties have some serious issues to overcome before America can be United again. The left is nuts, the right is nuts, and the rest fall in the corrupt profit turning middle.

However, anyway to get youger people and Americans in general to feel more connected to what's going on politically in our country is great.
