Their idea of competency is hopelessly skewered. Perhaps its because they rose to prominence by exploiting others, rather than by creating successful businesses. Wealthy people and those from wealthy families are not automatically corrupt. Warren Buffet and Bill Gates are billionaires and still functionally ethical human beings. Would Warren Buffet praise an aide for being an excellent liar? Would Gates keep an employee whose projects continually failed? Doubtful. Imagine the administrator of a hospital firing top specialists without explanation, or a team owner firing a winning coaching staff. Yes, its legal to fire employees at will, but when the manager is called in front of the board to explain the firings he better have SOME explanation. He can't use the excuse, "well, I only have to answer to my President." Not when the board consists of the People of the United States and those elected to represent them. "I don't know why I fired these Attorneys" is not an acceptable answer from the manager of the United States Justice Department. This is how the will of the people will be carried out for now. The attorney general has apparently lied under oath, so he can be impeached. A trial will be necessary to flush out the truth, of course he could resign, but as has been discussed before, a new AG will uncover more problems and will face the same decision of telling the truth or not. This is all very depressing especially when you throw in the fiasco in Iraq, the Katrina bungling and the myriad of other illicit, illegal and immoral acts conducted by this administration and its supporters. And I understand that there are bad democrats who did bad things, but the shear magnitude of the corruption and dishonesty prevalent on the republican side is almost unbelievable, except we know it to be true. I hope we will see soon a large group of moderate republicans reach across the aisle and come to advocate the progressive changes that are needed to preserve the integrity of their party and our country.

The Bush White House

Why is it automatic that Gonzalas is in the wrong? Or magically become pure, saintly "progressives"? How could that possibly happen with people so irretrievably corrupt?

And how does one preserve one's party by joining the other party? I think you want one party and no opposition to your views.

Thanks also for justifying congressional investigations into the lies and wrongdoings of the president and others. I always knew that the majority Republicans were not abusing the power given them by the voters to go after Clinton. If it's correct now, it was correct then. If it's "the will of the people" now it was also the will of the people then. Thanks for clearing that up and supporting our elected representatives' ability to go on political search and destroy missions to the continued detriment of those very voters who gave them the power, then and now.

Also, there is no evidence that Gonzalez has lied under oath, though you seem quite happy to believe it and are ready to schedule a trial. All we really have is political opportunism and the opinions of Sens. Charlie Schemer, Patrick Leaky and Dingy Harry Reid, people who I personally choose to disdain with all the rancor you show Republicans. Besides, from your comment it appears that you have already convicted the Attorney General, so why bother with a trial? Since you believe it, it must be true.

You and Amy B. should get acquainted. Stereotypes and generalizations are favored by both of you, even though it appears she is highly enamored of big business, a somewhat contradictory position for someone who seems to have such a good handle on the source of all the other evil in the world, apparently doesn't realize that somewhere along the line, both Warren Buffet and Bill Gates have diversified their assets to include Exxon Mobil, the epitome of corporate evil. They, like Bush and Cheney, have plenty of oil on their hands, trust me. And even though both seem to be lovable little fuzzballs now, they didn't get where they are by being lovable little fuzzballs. Gates has been reviled in the past as a cutthroat business person and a virtual monopolist and in fact has actually been found guilty of distasteful business practices.

But apparently Amy is an expert on who the really good rich people are. Coincidentally they are identifiable as "liberal" or "progressive". Somehow I think if they were identifiable as conservative or Republican, they would not be held up by Amy as shining examples of good rich people, despite their known and admirable support of philanthropic causes. They wouldn't be the "right" (or left, I suppose) kind of example.

Meanwhile, I have been a supporter of this administration so Jim considers me by extension to be engaged in illicit, illegal and immoral activities. Then again, I'm sure he didn't really mean anything he said and that it's just his writing style that's confusing me.

Stereotypes and generalizations. I have to admit you do some things well.

Thanks for the opportunity to rant. It seems appropriate here.

The Bush White House

RH Oregon,
You are a discredit to a fine state and displaying as much ignorance as the people you defend. I like something called facts, along with someting called logic, so let's see if you can follow along.... . 1. And every one of our National Guard at home with their families, now there is a broken contract.
As to my 'defense' it is aimed at the general spew of hatred targeted at 'my party'. I do not lump the majority of the Republican party with the sour cream that has risen to the top. Conservative? Sure. But he left the "dirty work" to others, that way, he could work with the Democrats on things he needed to work with them on.

I've left someone off the list. Gingrich. Great party leader. Sucked at SOTH because he was just like Pelosi - inflexible. It worked for a while because Dole was able to moderate things a bit in the Senate, but then it all fell apart for Gingrich. Pelsoi has no such advantage because Reid is every bit as loony as she is.

We see the results of Pelosi's and Reid's leadership. Nothing is getting done. The majorities the Democrats have are razor thin. That thin margin makes it essential that the leaders of both parties are at least a little flexible. It is really easy for the minority party to stick together against Reid and Pelosi though because they are so inflexible.

Watch for the Gingrich history to repeat itself.

The Bush White House

Go back in the cabin Ken. Mission accomplished- It was. Tell the crew of the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln that they didn't accomplish their mission. Re-read Bush's speech carefully and objectively and there might be a 1 in 100 chance that you'll see that there is nothing untrue or misleading or inaccurate about what it said at the time for the time and situation that existed. It even correctly warned that there was a long way to go in Iraq. 2. Nothing factual about your conclusions here, just opinions growing out of political opportunism to trash George Bush and his administration. Katrina and the suffering involved was shamelessly used for partisan political purposes. 3. George Tenet, held over from a Democrat administration against the judgement of many. Now, that might have been a mistake, but claiming that his firing is some evidence of incompetence is bogus. Just an opinion, but so is this "fact" you cite. 4. Actually, the general who supposedly got fired said we needed 350-400,000 troops. Other generals supported Rumsfeld's plan. As an old soldier, does your experience reflect the fact that there are great differences within the military chain of command about almost anything? Again, you have supplied an opinion, not a fact. Same for #5. 6. Harriet Miers- so what? I thought it was great strategy to offer up a sacrificial lamb, energize the base and assure that we got Sam Alito. 7. Bush has some ways to go to catch up with Clinton on invoking executive privilege, but he is closing in on Washington and Jefferson. Bush used EP the first time to withold documents related to Janet Reno and the handling of certain things during her tenure. These documents were requested by Republicans and they were refused. Executive privilege is well established legally. 8. Actually, I do have a bit of trouble understanding this one. But then legal parsing is rather intricate, especially when trying to determine what the definition of "is" is. 9. This entire statement is untrue since no charges for blowing a CIA ops cover were ever filed. No charges, nada, even though we know who actually leaked Plame to the press. Armitage is free as a bird and Libby may have been convicted of having a bad memory. Just as likely, in my opinion. And like you, all I have is my opinion. 10. Gonzalez did nothing wrong, but again, you're entitled to your opinion and fully free to assist in political search and destroy missions.

You make a lot of serious and quite insulting assumptions about RH Oregon and his/her beliefs, motives and opinions with what is actually very little factual support, just your version of things. That's normal, but still just opinion.

I thank you for your service, but it doesn't justify your final statement about RH Oregon. It erodes your credibility and it's disappointing that you resort to a worn out laundry list of partisan political talking points. I don't think your contribution to the debate elevates it much. Even here, where one doesn't have to rise very far.

The Bush White House

RH Oregon,
from what I have read, FBI testimony is backed up by other witnesses. unless its a conspiracy to make gonzo look bad (too late!), it's a numbers game whereby gonzo's accounts conflict with almost all the other witnesses' testimony. To me, it's a smoking gun, not definitive proof. However, the only way to determine what happened is not in the court of public opinion, but in a court of law. If this were a criminal preliminary hearing, I would think there is enough evidence to bind the "defendant" over for trial. Unfortunately, although the law should work that way, politics doesn't.

The Bush White House

RH Oregon-
No relations with that woman. (and how many died?)
I never inhaled. (and how many died?)
I did not have information on the whitewater deal. (and how many died?)

Anything sound familliar here?

And, you are right about the FBI guy possibly being the wrong one here. BUT- if it doaesn't get to court, or someone doesn't own up to it (lying), how the hell are we going to know??

The Bush White House

Middle Tennessee: When and how did you get so close to him?

The Bush White House

MISFTTR?:

That was a hell of a comeback. How long did it take to think of it, reader, before you asked to speak? (Permission granted, by the way.)

The Bush White House

Richard, Wash. State - My point on republicans crossing the aisle is that they should recognize that they are going to lose far less in 2008 if they attempt to work with the democrats in a more progressive direction (yes, a more liberal direction). You see in today's environment moving to the center is a progressive change and really not such a stretch for moderate republicans, perhaps for you it's distasteful, but for the country it's a good thing, in my opinion

Now about Clinton, was it correct to investigate his lying about receiving oral sex from Monica? - yes, because he was testifying under oath. He was impeached and was voted not guilty. OK, so if enough republicans see that Gonzo's impeachment should go the same way, then that's justice as we have it. But, they may decide he is guilty. Personally, of course I think he's guilty, and I think he's incompetant, and I think he is destroying the institution of the Justice Department.

As far as my stereotyping and generalizing the pathetic performance of this republican administration, I refer you to the evening news on any of the media outlets for the specifics.

Finally, I don't consider anyone who supports someone who is suspected of a crime to be guilty of that crime as well! That is un-American. People who believe suspected murderers are innocent are not killers as well! Now I do think those who voted for Bush in 2004 to be fairly naive, since it was pretty obvious then that he was not up to the job. But again, that's the American way - he won and now look what we have.

The Bush White House

No problem Don, gives ya break from Tellatubbies though don't it.

The Bush White House

Ted, just a comment on the perpetual lying machine of Washington DC, not justifing Iraq. State. My father was a life long Republican and an executive and he still managed to be an ethical professional. I have observed the executives at my company holding the line on employee benefts, laying off people, and making unpopular decisions, but still performing like people who expected to be accountable for their actions. But, my God, have you seen Gonzales testify in front of congress? And then to hear Cheney praise him after that abysmal performance? I guess my point was, what the hell has happened to professional standards in this administration. In my experience, successful business people have a level of garden variety integrity that is lacking in the Bush appointees. I don't mean the Gates and Buffet types are cherubs, I mean they adhere to everyday standards of behavior, like not valuing a talent for lying in a subordinate over the ability to manage an office. I know I'm not expressing this very well, but I am just disgusted with the incompetency and lowering of common professional standards in this administration. I mean, managers at the local McDonald's would be ashamed to go before their supervisors and say "I don't know, I don't recall, I know I've made mistakes but can't say what they were..." etc. etc.

The Bush White House

I was going to comment on cheney but then I thought, why step in shit. Between the Bush Administration's lackluster response during the storm and the fact that under cover of current media non-coverage, Bush has been backing away from promises made to rebuild New Orleans and strengthen her levees to Category 5, Katrina needs to be treated as a significant campaign issue and should come up in all presidential debates. It's far more than Edwards' haircuts, hedge funds, or how Hillary stands on Walmart. If this is considered to be "shamelessly" using Katrina for political purposes, so be it. Hopefully Jan. 21, 2009 won't be too late for New Orleans, a great American city which a Bush Administration with seriously misplaced priorities is being content to allow to die a slow painful death.
