The 57-year-old Ohio congressman has recovered from several near-death political setbacks, but has continued to pursue his goals.

Born in Cleveland in 1946, Kucinich is the oldest of Frank and Virginia Kucinich's seven children, and endured a difficult childhood.

"I come from the streets of Cleveland, from a family that lived in 21 different places by the time I was 17, including a couple of cars. And I'm telling you, it'll be from the streets of Cleveland to Pennsylvania Avenue for a worker's White House and a people's president," Kucinich said in a speech to the Urban League National Convention in Pittsburgh on July 28, 2003.

Kucinich left home when he was 17 years old, renting a $50-a-month walk-up apartment, enrolling at Cleveland State University and working at the copy desk at The Plain Dealer. He attended Cleveland State from 1967-70, but earned his bachelor's degree in speech communications from Case Western Reserve University in 1973. The following year he earned a master's degree in speech communications from Case Western.

At the age of 31, Kucinich became the youngest mayor of a major American city. But two years into his tenure, Cleveland became the first city to go into default since the Great Depression, prompting some members of the media to dub him "Dennis the Menace."

What the world needs now is love...sweet love. This little item made me laugh, which is a good thing. When you can get presidential candidates waxing poetic about love, it's a good time in my book.

I know these are serious issues but for the life of me, I don't see how you are ready for president because you understand it would be devastating to not be able to marry the person you love. I understand that. I guess I should form an exploratory committee too! Move over, Fred!

Politics is the art of the possible.
SF's mayor Newsome (an opportunist to the core) may have given the GOP the winning edge when he allowed gay marriage in SF in 2004. In all honesty, I supported the decision at the time. It was fairness.

Give civil unions all the rights of marriage and call it a civil union. In time (10, 15 years?), gay marriage will become reality.

But, for now, why give the holy rollers a rallying issue ??

Well, I have to agree with M. Boley that Gravel and Kucinich as well as Ron Paul are men of principles. There is something to be said for knowing when to compromise and standing your ground as well as the proper balance. I don't know if the above named candidates really know how to do that. To bad no one candidate could say, "My position is this on X subject and I understand the opposite point of view. Let us work together to meet in the middle for the good of the contry."

I read Stu Bykofsky's piece in the Philly Daily News about how we need another 9/11 to save this country. Astounding... the ignorance is just stupefying! That's all it would take to push this country into a police state.

Carrie - Yes, but if gay marriage takes that many more years to pass because we're trying to do it all in one fell swoop, then those people whose life it affects suffer than much longer. I have to agree with Sierra on this one; incremental change has always been a necessary part of the civil rights movement, and although that is a sad commentary on the slow evolution of people's tolerance, we should not deny reality, and thereby impede our own ability to achieve the final goal because we're too busy looking at the top of the ladder to climb the rungs. As Obama put it, many rights for African Americans needed to be addressed before miscegenation laws were scrapped, and had they tried it all in one fell swoop, it would have taken that much longer to get any of it done; him saying this is particularly notable considering miscegenation laws would have made his own parents' union illegal, and his very existence an affront to the law.
