Bottom line is that no manner what any politician says in the campaign about immigration, once in office there is no political will to actually accomplish the stated goals. Republicans leaders really do not want to stop illegal immigration because of the cost and the democrats see every immigrant as a potential vote.
Even if they build a fence and appropriate money for construction, how many decades will it take and how many decades will be spent maintaining a fence. It is going to be just like any major interstate highway project, in that it will never be completed. Once built, the fence will always require upgrades, maintenance and expansions. It will amount to a huge pork project for the Border States and contractors. How many politicians will be bought by companies vying for the construction and maintenance contracts.
If the government is responsive to the immigration reform and control, then the money should be spent on enforcement and people resources. Adding people and equipment to the immigration department and border security patrol would be a better use of resources. Just securing the southern border will not ensure we are free from terror threats. If we ignore the Northern border, we will leave our selves vulnerable from the north. After all how many of the 911 Hijackers crossed over the Mexican border?

Rudy did not do all the saving on that September day. There were many heroic men and women of the NYPD and NYFD among others who worked to get people out and those who were out to safety. He did some coordination and was a good symbol of hope at the time. This should not be the only thing that he should be judged on to be president.

What a person should be judged on when running for president (or other offices) are several: Experience (if any; technically none is needed), policy idea and plans on various subjects, character to some extent (but should not be used to eliminate), position papers, and background. Where the candidate's ideas come from could also be important. Since I am not nearly as ideologically set as other people, I am willing to listen to all of the candidates. There are some who are better than others. I would like to see one or two more parties that could run a viable presidential candidate.

What are Mayor Giuliani and Gov. Romney’s policies on immigration? Well, it depends on where and when you ask the question. Running for the Republican presidential nomination in Iowa this year they’re taking a pretty hard-line. But back home in liberal Massachusetts and New York City they were leaning a lot farther to the left.

Here’s Giuliani at a 1994 press conference:

“The reality is that they are here, and they’re going to remain here,”
"If they're working, and they're complying with the law, and they're making a contribution, then let's sign them up, let's register them, let's collect their taxes, and let's let them pay their fair share,"

"Some of the hardest-working and most productive people in this city are undocumented aliens,"

"If you come here and you work hard and you happen to be in an undocumented status, you're one of the people who we want in this city. You're somebody that we want to protect, and we want you to get out from under what is often a life of being like a fugitive, which is really unfair."

This is from one of Giuliani’s weekly mayoral radio addresses in 1996:

“Two days ago I announced that the City of New York has filed suit against the federal government. We are challenging a provision of the recently enacted federal Welfare and Immigration Law….Our lawsuit contends that the new federal law violates the Tenth Amendment of the United States Constitution by invalidating New York City’s “Executive Order 124.”
For those who may not know, “Executive Order 124″? is New York City’s policy regarding undocumented immigrants. This order was issued seven years ago by Mayor Ed Koch and then later reissued by Mayor Dinkins and then by me. “Executive Order 124″? protects undocumented immigrants in New York City from being reported to the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service while they are using City services that are crucial for their health and safety, and critical for the health and safety of the entire city.”

This is from a Giuliani speech to a pro-immigrant group on Thursday, January 9, 1997:
“So there is really no reason for the punitive anti-immigration legislation that we are now seeing in Washington. The "Know-Nothings" of the mid-nineteenth century tried to isolate America, in a way very reminiscent of what is happening now. It is a negative philosophy that sees people as liabilities. Giuliani strongly supported Bush’s guest worker program on Meet the Press:

"There isn't a mayor or a public official in this country that's more strongly pro-immigrant than I am, including disagreeing with President Clinton when he signed an anti-immigration legislation about two or three years ago, which we got some amendments of to protect the rights of immigrants."

Romney, who got caught using undocumented labor for both Massachusetts Public Works projects and his own yard work, has also taken liberal positions as recently as the last couple of years. Here’s Romney in a November 2005 interview with the Globe, supporting the McCain/Bush position:

"quite different from amnesty, because they required illegal immigrants to register with the government, work for years, pay taxes, not take public benefits, and pay a fine before applying for citizenship,”

"That's very different than amnesty, where you literally say, 'OK, everybody here gets to stay,
It's saying you could work your way into becoming a legal resident of the country by working here without taking benefits and then applying and then paying a fine."

In the same interview, Romney said it was not"practical or economic for the country" to deport illegal immigrants, adding:

"These people contribute in many cases to our economy and to our society"

“I don’t believe in rounding up 11 million people and forcing them at gunpoint from our country,”

“Those that are here paying taxes and not taking government benefits should begin a process towards application for citizenship, as they would from their home country.”

Of course neither candidate is voicing these opinions now that they’re seeking national office. And it’s not at all clear what, if anything, they actually believe.

Its pretty sad how many people show so much disrespect to someone. The fact is, when we were attacked on 9-11, Giuliani did exactly what he needed to do as a mayor. He did not cower back, as I am sure many of you did. He stood his ground as mayor and that city and our nation held together through it all and we kept our heads up. Whether he is flip flopping or not, the fact is, the man dealt with a huge crisis that I am sure none of you would have been able to handle, and he did it very well. He made sure that that city did what it could in the wake of everything that was going on, and the situation, as disasterous as it was, was handled in a much more organized manor than most would have ever have imagined it could be. He didn't stay in office very much longer after, but following such a huge disaster, of course it was a lot of pressure beyond anything one normally deals with, therefore he left office. 9-11 changed everyone, so therefore, sure, his views definitely could have changed on immigration, I am pretty sure everyones views changed on something that day, and now it is something he is using as a tool for his campaign. To me, immigration is not a huge threat, but it is something that should be taken into the account for the long run. It is easier to keep track of a country when you know who is living in it and that the people in the country abide by the government they have known to follow. If not, it can begin to slip, economically, socially, etc. The thing is, no matter who wins the election, things will still be messy. We just have to support our candidates to ensure things can be slowly resolved.

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Under his immigration plan, Rudy Giuliani would allow most of the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in this country to stay, work and even become citizens -- provisions that GOP hardliners blast as "amnesty."

In a rare revelation of his views on this hot-button issue -- and only in response to a direct question about it -- the Republican presidential front-runner outlined a position that resembles controversial parts of the comprehensive immigration bill Congress rejected this year because of charges it gave "amnesty" to illegal workers.

In two appearances here in a state where illegal immigration is on the rise, Giuliani said his first step would be to "end illegal immigration," by securing the border with physical and high-tech fences and properly deployed border patrols.

In response to a question by Richard Pope, 75, about the 12 million illegal immigrants already here, Giuliani said, "I would say come forward, get your ... tamper-proof ID card, get photographed and fingerprinted, and we will check you out."

He added, "If you want to work, pay your fair share and we'll sign you up. People who don't sign up we will find and throw out of the country."

Giuliani also said those workers who came here illegally but who qualified for the ID card could eventually become eligible for citizenship.

"If they ever wanted to become citizens, I would say they would have to pay a fine so it's not amnesty," Giuliani said. "Also they have to get at the back of the line, not get ahead of anybody else."

They would also have pass an English and civics test, he said.

Giuliani earlier this year rejected the Bush immigration bill as unworkable. He criticized it for failing to require an ID card for non-citizens and a database to track their arrival and departure in the country.

But he never attacked allowing the undocumented workers to stay or get citizenship.

Giuliani's plan runs counter to the views of immigration hardliners in his own party, including Rep. Tom Tancredo of Colorado, who is running for president as an immigration foe.

It also might open him to more criticism from his rival Mitt Romney, who is attacking the former mayor for running New York City as a "sanctuary" for illegal immigrants.

Giuliani yesterday held up his actions in New York as a model, comparing his requirement for finger-printing welfare recipients -- resulting in less fraud and fewer on the dole -- to his call for ID cards for noncitizens.

But in response to a question about whether George W. Bush had failed to enforce immigration laws, Giuliani refused to directly blame the president -- though he implicitly criticized him for failing to build the 700-mile fence authorized by Congress.

With our bad economy , weak dollar etc... We cannot attract foreing investors.

Investors want to make money and not to lose money. In the US we will loose money. Nothink woek! Housing is down, and the cost of life is way too much expensive.

If you penalize the industries, they will go abroad.
If you do not accept illegals, we will loose money by a lack of workmanship.

America, it's time to move..I hope it's not too late. But in my opinion is too late. Wars, debts, bad economy etc...What is the solution?

We hear so often that they are illegal and we are for rule of law.Natzis said that jews were bad for german society and they were rounded up.What followed we all know.Yet after war Natzis claimed they acted legally according to german law by killing jews.Legality is tricky term.Is somebody doing something legal can be wrong and unjust?Virtually anybody coming here for centuries were allowed to stay unless sick or insane.American Revolution was techniclly an illegal act against british rule.
Fact that milions of people are in prisons tells me that we are not that sqeeky clean when it comes to legality.Legal immigration is for families (chain migration)or rich people only.All the others are forced to cross border or overstay visas. Employers hire unauthorized workers get richer, live american dream have house in suburbs,spend money,economy gets better we all better for it.Send immigrants home en masse you will get great depresion send them slowly you will get recession over long period of time.Losing taxpayers that dont collect refunds or get social security while paying to the system is the best deal any country can have.That is why congress wont legalize them.That a cash cow for federal government and only a small burden for states(health care and education)If unathorized worker has health insurance and not too many kids in public school he is a cash cow for state.
Instead of spending money on foreign aid let them stay,work,pay taxes,we can save social security and housing market that way.
Where is american pragmatism.We need to think what we say not say what we fell.Countries with with higher immigration,legal or not do better and everybody gets richer even low skill workers.We have natural fear of outsiders especially when they look differentand they react by sticking together and not accepting us.Its time to break vicious circle.Lets not look at numbers that unfunded liabilities will cost trilions of dollars.It is highly hipotetical.Exactly the same scary tactics were used against irish and italians back in the days.Lets look at the fact that without illegal immigrants paying to social security fund system would collapse as of today.So if you ss reciepent and if you are for sending those folks home think twice.We have a islamic enemy and we should do anything to make as stronger in that fight.What we do instead?we try to give weapons to saudi arabia and fight illegal residents when 75 % ot the pays taxes like every citizen and all of them pay sales taxes they rent and buy cars supporting economy.They are less likely to commit crimes or use public services,yet if one of them commits crime it all over news for weeks.Dont listen to talk show hosts.They are on tv for milions od dollars they make,and they make up numbers and twist the facts.They are not jurnalist looking for thruth,they natzi agitators who care the about ratings.
