Those of you who are in politics/media place great stock in polls that are statistically flawed at the outset. If a undergrad student used the same sample (random registered Democrats) to poll the caucus support in Iowa, when Iowa's two highest caucus years attendance never exceeded 20%, as representative, of a candidates level of caucus support, the Professor would rightfully flunk them. And yet political pundits continue to ignore that the polls in Iowa are not only fundamentally flawed at the outset, but the pundits almost always screw up their Iowa predictions.

One would think after all the pundits were so royally embarrassed in the 04 caucus, because their predictions were so off, that they would be a bit more cautious!

First thoughts

FIRST THOUAGHTS:

OBAMA was fabulous. He gave a very presidential answer and also demonstarted the core of US philosophy in the answer regarding the IRAQ seperation. Even Biden, the expert had his jaw drop. Obama said, we should split but that decision has to be taken by the IRAQI's reflecting on the value of freedom of expression which is a constitutional value. Nothing works out if we act as BIG BROTHER and breathe down others neck. He has the vision to see that. Itb was fantastic that no one even was aware of such things. I GOT TO GIVE IT TO HIM.
I think its time to take out Gravel. Dennis can stay becos we need voices to question the big dog. The deabte appeared like a pack of hyenas attacking a lion. It appeared like an orchestrated effort from Hillary, Dodd, Biden to tear Obama but he stood his ground. I can see they shake when he brings up IRAQ.
I can understand their frustration. they must be thinking..Man..."who is this dude who comes from nowwhere.. while WE GREY HAIRED TRIED POLITICIANS HAVE PAID OUR DUES IN POLITICS" Thats what irkes them the most. They forget that JFK, Billy Clinton were all 45+/- 2 yrs when they became president. HRC canot stand Obama given his popularity and charisma. She can never accept defeat and thats why she will dance along biting her teeth to every scathing attack. Go OBAMA .. Shoot staright for the Oval office. No candidate will "run the table" in the primaries, so it will be decided on a second or third ballot, in which case the candidate with the most charisma and eloquence will win, and that is Obama. The pundits in the MSM seem to be infatuated with projecting Hillary as the "winner take all" in the primary season, but I believe the the electorate is far more sophisticated and this time voters in California and other big states won't give a hoot who wins in Iowa, New Hampshire or South Carolina.

First thoughts

DEMS LOL. I have to seriously wonder if you ever served at all either. Thanks for the advice, but I think I'll continue to commit on the military, after all it's my taxes that support them.

First thoughts

DEMs Fighting Back - With all due respect, you don't have to have served in the military to be able to comment on the military. That's like saying you can't comment on what Congress does unless you have been a Member of Congress...which is a ridiculous proposition.

First thoughts

Chuck stop the lazy reporting and elaborate on a candidates issues rather than sound bites. New York Senator Hillary Clinton has built a bit more support than the month before while the other candidates remain essentially where they were (review week-by-week numbers).

Rasmussen Reports national polling shows that Clinton’s support averaged 33% for all polls released in April. Her support increased to 35% in May, 36% in June and 39% in July. The first three polls released in August show her averaging 41% support.

Illinois Senator Barack Obama’s support averages 23% for the first three weeks in August. That’s down slightly from 25% in July, 26% in June, and 27% in May. Obama peaked on the eve of the first Presidential debate. When Obama's campaign said it had recieved money from 258,000 donors through the end of June, Clinton's campaign was quick to point out that Obama occasionally charged entrance fees for large events, like a thousand person crowd in Minneapolis, and counted the proceeds of the sale of campaign paraphernalia as donations. But they were envious, too: advisers conceded that the breadth of Obama's support made it harder for Clinton to argue that her presidential bid was worth the investment of the party's grassroots.

Through the end of March, Clinton received money from approximately 60,000 contributors. Her tally through the end of June is not known.

Still won't tell anyone how "FEW" people are willing to give their money to her. LOL. Maybe if she ask for $1.00 they might pony up. Hey Van send your "GIRL" some cash so she can stop begging. Where are all of those 1,0000,000 supporters she has been touting. The president’s approval rating remains unchanged from last week at 46 percent. A majority of Americans are still dissatisfied with the direction of the country: 56 percent, the same as last week. Yet Bush’s support number has increased by two or three points and his margin over Kerry by four or five points. Why? One clue may lie in the candidate’s favorability ratings. Overall, 52 percent of registered voters have a favorable opinion of Bush, 43 percent have an unfavorable opinion of him. Last week 50 percent were favorable and 47 percent were unfavorable. The favorables beat the unfavorables by nine points this week, last week they only outnumbered them by three points.

Kerry has seen exactly the opposite shift. His favorable/unfavorable ratings are 47 percent favorable and 46 percent unfavorable this week, basically even. Last week, his favorability rating was 50 percent and his unfavorable 45 percent."

http://www.pbs.org/newshour////shields&gigot/december00/sg_12-8.html

http://www.slate.com/id/89619/

Current F/U numbers for the top 3

Clinton 45/54

Edwards 49/46

Obama 47/45

All three leading democratic candidates have unfavorable numbers over 45%.

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/favorables/election_2008_democratic_candidates_running_in_2008_presidential_election

It won't be any different this time. It is only a real issue to those who have no knowledge of the history of Presidential elections.

Some folks here post the same opinions and contentions even after they have been exposed by the factual evidence. No matter how many times you repeat something, if it has no basis in fact, it has no basis in fact.

As those who are truly seeking knowledge to base their decisions on in this campaign season have the opportunity to review the facts on the candidates, they will learn which sources are credible, and which are not when they read the posts on this board.

Van

First thoughts

DID SOME ONE SAY G O N Z O -- G A T E ?

First thoughts

I WANT A JOB WITH THE GAVERMENT SO THAT I TO CAN LIE AND CHEAT! When numbers get into the 46-47 range, the candidate starts to gain vulnerability. At 48 and above, the candidate is unelectable.

The difference between 45 and 48 seems small, but under consistent polling techniques, from what I've read in Campaigns and Elections Magazine, its significant. Negatives don't have the volatility that head to head polling often does. And negatives rarely go down.

Thinking about it mathematically, consider a candidate with negatives of 46 against a candidate with negatives of 48. There's probably some overlap of people who hold those views, but for modeling simplicity, let's say there isn't. This means roughly 6 percent are truly up for grabs.

The candidate with negatives at 48 has to win more than two-thirds of those truly swing voters. As any political analyst will tell you, that's a daunting task to say the least. Not mathematically impossible, but nearly practically impossible.

There seems to be some deviation in how some current polls are coming up with their numbers. I saw one in which Clinton's negatives were down at 36. That same poll had Obama's negatives at 20. These simply are unbelievable numbers. Even a popular, likable candidate who is well known would be higher than 36 through party identification alone, and as for the 20 figure, its ludicrous.

Clinton's negatives have consistently been at 48 in polls I've seen. Van cites a poll above in which Clinton's "unfavorables" are at 54, and I assume its presented as those "unfavorables" are exactly synonamous with "negatives." Not sure that's true, and I have no idea why he cites these numbers as they would be extraordinarily damaging to Clinton if believable. They're not. I can imagine her negatives climbing up to the 49 level, but I can't imagine even her pulling negatives at 54 - those are Barry Bonds or Michael Vick type numbers.

Clinton's two-fold challenge is 1) to lower real negatives below 48 and 2) to convince people that a 48 number doesn't mean what it means. Thus far I haven't seen numbers under 48 - maybe they are out there, but I haven't seen them. She's done quite well insulating her supporters and the media that 48 is acceptable, though the question is coming up more and more often, and will continue to as we move closer to the Iowa Caucus.

First thoughts

Only from the Clinton News Network.....

Newsday
Les Payne
August 12, 2007 Senator Clinton, are you black enough?

The question usually aimed at her darker opponent from Chicago triggered a burst of laughter from Hillary Rodham Clinton. CNN White House correspondent Suzanne Malveaux pinned back the former First Lady to explain how she could "sustain black support " while running against an African-American. Ironically, thanks to Sen. Barack Obama's mixed white and Kenyan parentage and campaign mischief, it is he who usually gets to field the "black enough" question.

Although Clinton moon-walked away from Malveaux's direct question, she came before the 2,700-member journalist group with her designer set of promises. As part of her Youth Opportunity Agenda, she says the initiative flows from her belief that "it takes a [white] village to raise a child."

First thoughts

Yep! Todd and the corporate media support the Dem candidate who enters the prez race seeking to start a conversation - ROFL! - but has yet to offer any specifics on policies - while the corporate media provides 24/7 pro-Hillary coverage courtesy of the Hillary-Murdoch merger.

No thanks Todd - we're supporting the candidate who has produced the best plans and solutions for the middle class - John Edwards.

Why does the corporate media hate the middle class?
First thoughts

According to the LATimes, John Edwards is the candidate the Republicans fear the most.
That makes sense - since Fox News and other corporate media have been smearing him from the gitgo.

First thoughts

Colleen:

Why would anybody want to commit on abortion?
it's nobodies business but the woman

First thoughts

Jerry dummy,Susanne Malveaux is a Bush Cheerleader, is always suspiciously hanging around the Bush twins and writing syrupy sweet stories about them. There is a FEDERAL LAW that makes disclosure MANDATORY. The links are here. This person is beyond consideration, as their inability to understand the nature of the numbers listed, despite the guides provided on the websites listed, like this;

SOURCE OF FUNDS

   * PACs: Contributions from political action committees.

   * INDIVIDUALS: All contributions from individuals, both large and small.

   * CANDIDATE: Contributions and loans from the candidate to his/her own campaign.

   * OTHER: All other revenues collected by the campaign, such as interest from the campaign's bank accounts and loans from outside sources. This figure is calculated by subtracting PAC, individual and candidate money from total revenues received. Negative numbers generally indicate an accounting error by the campaign.

http://www.opensecrets.org/pres08/pacind.asp

HOW TO READ THIS CHART: PAC contributions and large donations from individuals are the two biggest sources of contributions for most members of Congress. In the 1996 elections, winning U.S. House candidates collected about 39% of their money from PACs, 36% from individual contributions of $200 or more, and 19% from small individual contributions. Senators get about 25% of their money from PACs, with large individual contributions accounting for the biggest share of their campaign cash.

The number of wealthy candidates funding their own campaigns has risen dramatically in recent years. In 1998, a total of 95 House and Senate candidates spent $100,000 or more of their own money. Van cites a poll above in which Clinton's "unfavorables" are at 54, and I assume its presented as those "unfavorables" are exactly synonamous with "negatives." Not sure that's true, and
I have no idea why he cites these numbers as they would be extraordinarily damaging to Clinton if believable. I think that most of us would agree that we need a Democratic president that will not be hampered either by polarization or a Republican Congress.
Anyway, all of this arguing about polls is useless, four months before the primaries begin, as four months is light years in political terms (just ask John Kerry). We'll have to see if the excitement that Barack generates will distill into electability in Iowa and New Hampshire. I just know that I haven't seen a candidate with Obama's potential for uniting the country, in the forty or so years that I have been following politics. In addition, he was against this insane incursion into Iraq from the start (see his speech Oct. 2002). I view that prescience as ample proof that his foreign policy judgment is not to be qualified as naive by the 'more experienced' senators running for the nomination who voted to authorize the president's use of force.
I would advise Van against brow beating people with statistical bullsh*t, as his arrogance coupled with his statistical analysis doesn't make the rest of us any more willing to support a candidate who doesn't command our trust. Also, we all know how volitile polls can be. The polls are only snapshots in time and can't be used to predict trends since they are unable to account for the occurrence of ongoing and sometimes unrelated events. The science is limited.
But, what I see in these blogs is an enthusiasm for Barack that is not matched by the other candidates. And I have to say that that Obama seems to have a quality that may bring leadership to the presidency that hasn't been seen since JFK.

First thoughts

If Sam Nunn runs for president, I know who I'll be voting for. The man is honorable, moderate, and a good compromiser---AND HE'S SMART!! He has the other losers in both parties beat by a Georgia mile.

First thoughts

J. Any contribution is better than none. The benefit of Iowa and NH going first is that a candidate with less funding can still do well and win, because ad time is not as expensive. But if a fraction of those who believe Joe is the best candidate, donated what they could spare (from 10.00 to the maximum allowed)Joe would have plenty of funding!

Jamie, Elwood Park- Biden has not been running around criticizing Obama. He has complimented him often on the stump, but when he is asked a straight forward question, such as "do you believe Obama has the experience (or is ready)to be President." His response was not yet, but he thinks he can get it. I think the world of Obama, and have since I first saw him before he won the primary race in 04 in Illinois, and I have been fortunate to meet him and talk with him on four separate occasions, but I don't think he is ready yet, and wished he would have gained more experience before jumping in the race. I watched him at an event in Cedar Falls (about an hour north of my home) on c-span. (it was taped last Wednesday) He really did not know a lot of detail on important issues, such as specific excesses in the military budget, and wasteful military projects (specific military planes, tankers, etc.) that the defense dept. doesn't even want, but keep getting funding, because they are "pork" projects. When answering specific questions he tried to be general, and then admitted that he didn't know about the specific military vehicle/project the questioner asked about, and would need to learn more about the specific military projects before he could comment on whether to scrap that project. It took him 3-4 minutes before he got around to saying he didn't know anything about the specific project. There were many other areas he was not yet knowledgeable on, due to the length of time in Washington. I appreciate his candor BUT he should know about the espre (sp) and other hardware, not only because he has already voted on funding which included it and other military pork, but because the man who asked the question is part of a anti-military pork group that has being going to candidate events and asking each candidate whether they'd commit to scraping the project, so he should have been prepared for the question, and educated himself on the specific military pork project.

Sen. Biden is often accused of criticizing Obama, when he didn't even do so. At the AFL-CIO event Biden said that his colleagues (pleural) were wrong about the Pakistan flap. He said it was already US policy to take Bin Laden out if we knew where he was regardless of where that is. This was far more critical of his close friend Sen. Dodd, and Sen. Clinton, than it was of Obama. Dodd and Clinton were claiming Obama was being irresponsible, and yet as Biden pointed out this is already existing law. However despite Biden using the colleagues in the pleural, which an educated journalist should have understood referred to at least two people, and therefore wasn't an attack on Obama alone (or at all), the pundits claimed he joined Dodd and Clinton in attacking Obama, when in reality he attacked Dodd and Clinton. Only Countdown had it right!

Mitchell Feldman-

The ABC poll mentioned Sunday was the ABC- Washington Post poll that came out August 1 (or 3?) It is an invalid poll on its face, because it starts with an inappropriate polling sample (500 random registered Democrats, as opposed to a sample exclusively, or made up largely of random verified prior caucus goers- record turn out in 88 & 04 was 20% of registered democrats- as a result statistically the poll starts with 80% of its sample including people who don't attend caucuses.) There were also numerous internal inconsistencies within the poll, that would have caused a polling entity concerned with poll sample validity to be concerned (such as the number of people who claimed they were unhappy with the selection of candidates was over twice as large as the number claiming to be undecided. Your undecided should never be less than those unhappy with the slate of candidates, let alone the # of undecided representing only 44% of those unhappy with the slate of candidates!)Also that same poll had Richardson at 15%, that as well as the rest of the poll is merely a poll of name recognition among 500 randomly selected democrats, 400 of which aren't and won't attend the caucus. Richardson had a massive ad buy with great commercials in May, June and July. Richardson has run more commercials in total than all others candidates combined, that will increase your name recognition, which is all the poll measured. But his on the ground retailing campaigning has not translated into support. Judging from on the ground support, (number of people showing up for the candidates events, bumper stickers on cars, and "buzz" among those actively engaged) Richardson is not ahead of Biden right now, let alone at 15% support. His support had been superficial, and he lost much of the real support he had earlier in the campaign due to his qualifications, because as he said at the debate on Sunday, he has been making a mistake a week on the campaign.

First thoughts

HP - again, you're making it about me instead of about the topic at hand.
