My sympathy is with any passenger these days. The airlines are worse than ever, but they lobbied Congress for a change in the law, and now they threaten you with arrest every time you complain about the air conditioning or time on the tarmac. A friend sat in an un-air-conditioned jet on the tarmac in Las Vegas in the middle of the summer for 4 hours, and the response of the flight crew to people asking to de-plane their relatives with heart conditions was to threaten them with the law. The airline never seems to be reprimanded for speciously reporting passengers, either, so even if they can't get you arrested they can have you questioned just long enough to miss your flight.

Airlines employees are arrogant and rude, especially ticketing agents and stewardesses. There have been many occasions upon which airlines employees have put hands on people to push them out of the way in a boarding line, or to push them down into their seat on a plane.
On top of that, the airlines charge you more, treat you like $#1+, and use 9-11 as an excuse for it all. (This is coming from someone who frequently travels on business, by the way.)
I would like to know how pushing someone's oustretched arm away constitute's "assault and battery."
I also need more details of the incident before I'm prepared to say that this is anything other than just another frustrated flyer who is sick of the poor service, rude treatment, late arrivals, mis-handling of baggage, and higher ticket ticket prices that we've all been subjected to since 9-11.

I wrote this for a local election. It applies to all elections. Everyone wants to blame the President, Congress, Senate and the media. Look to the simple truth and vote. Consider the simple guide I have provided below.

"Nothing to Lose"

In the decision process of voting, we are faced with the obvious; “Who is the better Candidate”? First, we need to distinguish “New Candidate”, and “Incumbent” A New Candidate would be someone that has never held public office, or a public service position via appointment or prior election. An Incumbent would be one who has held, or is holding a public office via previous appointment or election. Using that as a guideline and basis of determination of whether a candidate is an “Incumbent” or not, now we may proceed.

The three steps are elementary. First, ask yourself; “What has Candidate (Incumbent) done for me"? Choose any current or past elected or appointed official running for an elected office. Don’t allow the answer to simply jump from your lips, be objective. Unfortunately, whether you are objective or not, the same answer will likely follow, “Nothing”!

Second Step! Considering that the individual you chose above is running for office, and all of his or her energy is dedicated to running for office, what is Candidate (Incumbent), doing? Again, take a moment, ignore the mud slinging, be objective. Remember, all of his or her energy is applied to running for office, a full time effort. In this effort, many promises are made, along with a lot of promises for a brighter future. “What is Candidate (Incumbent) doing for me NOW”? Uh-Oh! Nothing!

Well, here is the opportunity for the Candidate (Incumbent) to redeem himself, or herself. Ok, the third step is near. We have arrived at an answer in the first and second part of this process. The third part!!! Stop and ask yourself this equally important question; “What will Candidate (Incumbent) do for me once he or she is elected"? Be objective. Ok, ask yourself, “If history has a way of repeating itself, what is likely to follow”? Nothing!!!

It seems a bit elementary to use such simplicity in this process. It is a serious decision and a decision we assume will affect us greatly. We might add, (objectively), the only real winner in the election processes is the winning candidate. Look at all of the finger pointing, the inability to do more than blame the other guy, the other party, or use whatever excuse comes closest to convenience. Then consider that these people we choose to elect pay no health insurance, pay no Social Security Taxes, and we will be paying them a significant government pension. Would it be safe to say if we vote the “Incumbent” out of office, we have "NOTHING TO LOSE"???

Many of them are on ego trips. I would hold off judgment on this until all the facts are in. I have no sympathy for the congressman or anyone else who flies. I quit flying in 2000--9/11 had nothing to do with it.

Airline travel means you pay a company hundreds of dollars to be treated like garbage. Why do you do it? Spending two days driving 1500 miles is FAR preferable to having the airline treat you and your belongings like hostages for eight hours.

Most business travel isn't necessary--technology has rendered a good portion of it functionally obsolete, but business can't seem to wean itself. They seem to attach some level of importance to unnecessary cross-country travel.

Perhaps someday I'll patronize airline again, if they can learn how to treat people like people. I'm not holding my breath, though. Meanwhile, by spending your money with them, you're telling them you approve. And don't give me this "sometimes there's no alternative" garbage. There's always alternatives. If you think the time factor is worth the dehumanizing experience, keep flying. I feel bad for you. Luckily, though, I no longer feel your pain.

OKAY, I have had it with the use of the word "tarmac" to describe the area where aircraft are parked at an airport. Airports have not used "tarmac" since WWII. "Tarmac" is a registered trademark for a paving product, and if you type it into your search engine, you can read all about it. Airports use concrete to support planes, not tarmac. Parking areas are sometimes properly referred to as a ramp or apron, but not tarmac.

I can certainly understand why the Congressman lost it. I, like many of you, have waited in long lines and endured the hassles of modern airline travel. I have dealt with airline incompetence, overbookings, rudeness and understaffing. I have bit my tongue while going through the farce they call airport security; I've sat on the tarmac for hours waiting for clearance to take off; I have endured scores of delayed and canceled flights; had my luggage lost on numerous occasions; and watched them confiscate the most benign of my personal possessions all in the name of homeland security. I tell you it's enough to turn any sane person irrational. Having said all that, the Congressman lost it and now he has to pay the price, just like anyone of us would have to. Of course, if I was on his jury, I'd probably give him a pass -- not because he's a politician or a democrat, but because the airline industry brings out the worst in people. P.S. I hope the airline security worker in Medford, Oregon enjoys the 6 ounce jar of "crater lake" huckelberry jam he confiscated from my carry-on. I'm sure the country was saved from a great disaster.

You can bet your last dollar that by the time this comes to court, the charges will be reduced or suspended in contemplation of dismissal. This would be the case if Filner had been a Republican, too.

What was left out of the story was just how long Filner was waiting for his bag. If it were 15 minutes or so, he'd be totally unjustified. However, if he had been standing at the carousel a couple of hours, and had been treated rudely by an airline employee, then he would have been justified in his anger (although not in striking a worker, which he didn't do).

When I was younger, I looked forward to flying. No longer. The airline industry, or at least the major carriers, United and Northwest especially, need to take customer relations lessons from Amtrak, using the logic that an idiot can learn from a moron.

Our a/lines as well as our political system is in major disarray. When we make sweeping statements condeming either, we are unfair to the vast majority of hard-working people who are trying to just make a living. Not defending the a/lines or their people; and certainly not apologizing for the actions of our politicians who do pass laws that they don't have to comply with. Have always been that way. But when any of our elected leaders act up, we love it! They are human and it is nice to see them be pained as we are. Nothing will change regardless of what happens to whom. This idiot will keep his office, and the employee will get an apology; and that will be it.
My luggage has been lost, arrived late, and been sent to God knows where. Have witnessed people berating staff unmercifully. Like they had something to do with the loss? A plane was delayed 3 1/2 hours in DIA about 10 yrs ago, and it would embarrass you to see what the ticket agent had to tolerate. By the time I got there, she explained in very civil tones the delay was because of a mechanical issue. I simply told her if it was a bolt and nut they needed, I'd go down to the hardware and get it. She had a big laugh and I got over $30 in free chits to spend in the terminal while waiting. Patience and a good smile can and will be appreciated. But, let's not get into how the poor people who have to take reports on lost luggage are treated. A video of same would shame most of us. Anyone flown on Hooters A/line? If so, and they tie us up on the tarmack...who cares? Keep smiling.

I feel sorry for someone like the congressman who, under moutianous pressure to scedule, runs into these sorts of stone walls. His frustration could find better focus, however.

Airline employees are aragant and rude, not as a rule , thankfully , but unfortuantely with about 4x more than is common in the outside world. Flying carries so many inconvenient rules now and most of them are unecessary; including most, ostensibly, used for 'our safety'. They DONT make it safer. What makes security safer is a hieghtened alertness of those tasked to said security. Preparedness, vigilance and dedication and manpower poportional to the task are all that matter. Other things can trade measures of security but they do so at compounding cost(financial/efficiency/rights/trust/ambience/mental health).

Theres always a way around even the best security , so a reasonable balance of risk to rules has to be set. Currently that balance is tipped heavily in favor of rules. Its been proven how easy it is to violate the current'tight' security by people like reporters. Since my debate of justification could fill a book , I wont expound upon it here too much. Pretty soon , just to be able to be deemed safe , youll have to submit to rectal scanning ,be manacled nude with a muzzle and stored in a pleiglas cell, having your luggage shipped separately.

This is killing tourism , airlines, preople in general and robbing freedom. Its such a negative and invasive buisness to travel, I have personally sworn it off unless necessary to life and family. I dont have anything to hide , either. I own a passport and have no record. I have no strongly held political loyalties, just beliefs in liberty. I just want wayfarers rights where I choose to go. They include a reasonable expecation of hospitality from hosts, the right to such liberty as can not inpinge on the liberty of another, and the ability to be able to trust authority will not over reach its rights to orwellian hieghts. Theres a reason theyre mentioned in the bible the quran and at least touched upon in most other religions. It makes for a better existance.

We lost to the terrorists when we gave up such freedom. We dont win until it is given back.

Anyone remember Mcarthy? "Ive got a list .." Remeber internment? Remember creation haebus corpus , miranda, the establishment of the rule no taxation without representation? Why are those signifigant together (amongst others)? Some people cant grasp why. They are those who are ignorant of the value of true freedom. They are those that prurport they can be just sacrifices in the name of security , the state , and your greater good. How soon we forget. What do people want? Someone to tell them what kind of silverwear u can put in your drawer? How to raise your kids? What religion to believe? How to travel? Maybe some socialist sheep need that. I need to be free.

I find no argument fault with the congressman in thinking it may have been an innapropriate wait. Something needs to be done. Perhaps an application of authoirtarian pressure, applied from the top down on the heads of those making rules. Someone like a congresss man could get that done I'd bet.

However, the airport shouldnt be the place for you to debate airport policy and if one goes to assult someone in a public place, they should be prepared to pay the consequences. The congressman could have conducted himself with a higher degree of etiquate befitting his station and made a phone call to a supervisor. Probably, he'd have gotten a more satisfying result , too. Call the person who has to listen and manage and apply liberal applications of heat. The best thing he can do now for his image is plead guilty, assuming it happened that way and the evidence is there.

I had to sit next to this guy on a UAL flight to LAX from IAD about 4 years ago. at the time I flew for a UAL express airline and the FA told me to sit in the emergancy exit as First was over sold.

Anyways I got there earlier and was in Uniform and he comes up and says "Oh I was told this row was only for Me" I ignored him and he was just itching to tell me he was a congressman from my home state.
and to top it off upon arriving in LAX he calls the Flight Attendent to make sure he has his Special assistants to quitely exit him off the airplane instead of with the rest of us Tax paying citizens that had to exit the normal way.

I can't be percise about the dates if it was pre or post 9/11 but I'll never forget that flight I'm pretty sure he was just elected when it happened but still another politican that thinks he's better then everyone else.

No doubt, the guy lost it. What Rep. Filner did was inappropriate and appears to have been illegal. I'm sure he now wishes he'd handled that situation more tactfully. But millions of American travelers who have been treated like dirt at airports this year can probably relate to why he -- or anyone else who has been flying lately -- might come a bit unhinged. I'm not sure at what point it became a universal airline practice to treat travelers like cattle, but that seems to be SOP these days. Long lines, inexplicable delays, a screw-you attitude from airline personnel -- these seem to have become as much a part of the trip as stale pretzels. Maybe the good Congressman just got mad as hell and decided he wasn't going to take it any more. I'd be willing to bet that there are many more people who are one more airline screw-up away from losing it themselves.
So who's to blame for this mess? Well, actually, it's us. We consumers have turned this once regulated industry into a commodity. Like Dr. Frankenstein, we can't seem to understand why we now have a monster on our hands. Maybe the reason is that we expect to fly more cheaply than our parents and grandparents did. Should we really be shocked or irate when airlines cut corners to meet our insatiable hunger for cheap travel? I'm by no means suggesting that we re-regulate the airlines. But as we feverishly look for the best bargains on the Internet, we shouldn't be terribly surprised when we get what we (don't) pay for. It's not much fun being stuck in the smaller planes and less frequent flights now filling the unfriendly skies. And it's hardly a lot of fun waiting an extra hour or so afterward for baggage to de-plane. But we got exactly what we asked for. As it turns out, sometimes cheap isn't such a great deal.

I wish those people who see this as a manifestation of Congressional arrogance would stop and ask themselves if they cannot imagine an ordinary citizen, given sufficient provocation (I've been through Dulles and had to retrieve my luggage there, and sufficient provocation is easy for me to imagine) acting in precisely the same way. Listen. Firstly this incident involved a female employee. The said employee told Mr Filner politely to wait his turn, as there was a line of customers waiting to be attended too.
The congressman started a rhetoric of verbal abuse before pushing his way to the front, he then continued to push the employee on his way to ignorantly thinking he can go through a secure zone where oddly enough only employess can go. Why does a person who is supposed to be a representative of the people, and a Government official working on air safety!! behave in such a way that is not only abusive, it is in violation of national security. The said Filner deserves to be prosecuted like any regular citizen would be.
Any ignorant people that are defending him, are doing so because of his position of power, if this would have been some trailer park resident, you would be taking the side of the airline employee. I think the American public has developed a "fashionable" distaste of politicians. Not excusing what this individual has done, but lets look at a day in their lives compared to ours. Most individuals work 40 hours a week, rush home ("road raging" the whole way), and get to spend the rest of the day with their families. Imagine your job being 24-7, your family probably living in CA (assuming this individual's family lives at home), and under tremendous pressure to be here in time to meet with committees, etc. I think most people think being a congressperson is a piece of cake. I think most people would disagree if they were in congress--especially in the House where you have to produce EVERY two years or you are replaced. Stress makes us do things we normally wouldn't do. I think most of these posts are trying to make this a Republican or Democrat thing or a "they are all scum" thing. The truth is their job is probably 5-10 more times challenging and stressful than our jobs and maybe there is some jealousy among these posts. I think politicians are the absolute worst at getting the public to understand how challenging their jobs are--maybe everybody should find how a week of a first term congressman goes (not saying he is a first timer). Again not excusing this individual and this is a non-partisan post. However I think everybody posting here should look up his record, how many votes he has attended, etc. I think once you realize how hard a representative (especially of the House) has to work--maybe you would have a little more empathy. Democrat or Republican, it is wrong to enter an area at the airport designated as "employees only." However, I imagaine there is not a one of us on this board who has not lost his/her temper while traveling in public. How many has cursed at or given a finger to another traveler? Some even get shot or do the shooting in the case of such behavior. I have even had a shouting match with a rude checker. We are living in complicated, confusing times.

I am a Democrat, and I understand his impatience, but I do not excuse his behavior nor that of the GA Senator who smacked a WH security guard.

As for the statement by another writer that all Democrats know is violence, I would say, what administration has bombed the hell out of Iraq, which had no WMDs; and which party still wants to invade Iran? I do believe Republicans love violence! They abhor abortions, but approve dropping bombs on babies!

Some say if this Congressman was a Republican, he would be kicked out of office. You gotta be kidding! DeLay was not kicked out; he quit. It is absolutely the most disorganized and customer unfriendly of any airport I have encountered. Total chaos is the best way to describe United's baggage claim area. I now avoid any international flights that require retrieving luggage in Dulles.

It is hard to take sides on this one without more details. I travel quite a bit, and many of the airlines follow the rule of "civil to everyone, courteous to no one". It is against company policy to give out any answers to any question unless trapped.

Many of the folks working the more menial jobs at the airports are not really even qualified for those jobs, but with a robust economy qualify only because the folks who had the jobs before found something better.

Baggage agents are pretty far down the food chain, and all think they are the TSA. If I am an employeer, and I can convince an $8/hour baggage agent they are important as a $30/hour security guard, I just turned a $22/hour profit.

In this case, the Police took no action when they came, but now one of these self-important airline employees is making a charge - come on now. What a way to waste their 15 minutes of fame.

I've always thought that one should hear both sides of a story and wait for the evidence rather than pouncing on a story just for political reasons (see, I told you I was a Liberal). It is better to be right after listening to the facts than it is to appear stupid after the facts come out.

Of course, Republicans are bound to disagree.

It is funny how all the Republicons out there are jumping on this story. As if some Democrat being in a restricted area balances out the leaking of top secret information for political purposes and obstruction of justice and all the other proven criminal activity on the part of the Republican party.

We have a very interesting and amusing situation developing with this "mishap"
Lord knows that the elected aristocracy is aware that the laws that they enact do not apply to them. examplescomdffortlessly to our minds, ie; Teddy giving swimming lessons on Cape Code one summer, Hillary dodging a policeline at the Westchester Airport (with her car)the summer of her run for theSenate, unable to find supoened billing records which were in her bedroom' Patrick Kennedy racing and crashing his car in DC with several mind altering chemicals in his system after which he is brought home by Wash. Cap police...because his auto was not driveable.
All house and senate members have their own designated parking at the capital airport....We more or less tell them that they are "very special,and of course, they believe it. However, since 9/11 the airline folks have really gottten the 'us vs. them" fever. You really can't look at these folks sideways. If you have been flying lately you know what I'm saying. I know' I know, these folks put up with a tremendous quantity of nitrogenous end-product on a more than daily basis. But My Lord so does the flying public...that's you and me, in our daily lives and we don't have aides, or "travelling assistants" designated parking spaces etc..
This little episode has already become a "tad" unusual. ie. Rep.Filner has been cited for having committed a crime. Why then was he permitted to contine his trip...you try that sometime, Oh, and see if they will let you make your flight

Does this really suprise anyone? The apathy by the airlines and the arrogance of the politician are never a good combination. Anyone who has flown knows the deplorable attitude of most of it workers. The same can be said of the sense of entitlement our elected politicians on most levels have. There is enough blame for everyone.

P.s. Who cares what Hannity or anyone else has to kvetch about, shouldn't the American public be fed up with all our politicians disgraceful actions as well as lackadaisical customer service in almost every industry.

Airline service is not and airline employees are overworked underpaid and uncaring about lost delayed or damaged luggage.

Traveling is no fun for everyone.

Why is there no OUTCRY here at how ridiculously slow the baggage handling is at IAD must be? I land at Frankfurt (Germany) and my bags are at the carousel before I can even get to it. An hour for bags after a flight that was only 45 minutes. What have we come to? How about some embarrassment that America handles luggage delivery wosre than the French, the Germans, the Italians, and oh, about another 25 other countries.

Most of you here are playing politics instead of concentrating on the cause of the frustration.
