Bonnie, becuase they are legitimate debates and not "phony." If you think it's a problem then maybe you need to call up the Republican National Committee and tell them that they are squandering their potential airtime by not holding debates. The DNC actually REQUIRED that their candidates take part in the YouTube debate. The Republican candidates had to have theirs cancelled because they couldn't agree on a date and rescheduled it to two months later. You want parity in airtime, tell the candidates to get their butts in gear and hold some debates. Make the RNC require their candidates take part.

If you haven't figured it out, Bonnie, it already matters. The nominees for each party will be decided in February -- six months away. It matters now to know where the candidates stand on issues.

I'm really not following Bonnie on this. The Democratic candidates are participating in more debates/forums than the Republicans, and therefore are getting more news coverage...because they are actually DOING something. The Republicans were invited to participate in some of these forums as well, but they declined.

The Democratic candidates are taking advantage of every opportunity they get to participate in these forums and debates, to get their message out and to try to connect with the people. No one is denying them air time for their debates; in fact, when Republicans have debates, they are televised and covered as well.

That being said, I agree with those who think the partisan division has gotten out of hand. If someone who leans left (whether it be slight left or whether they are nearly horizontal from leaning so far) the right delegitimizes anything that person has to say, regardless of how valid it may be. And, I hate to say it, the same is often true with the liberals treatment of conservatives. Holding different political beliefs than soemone else does not make you evil or un-American.

The Constitution allows for political discourse. It encourages it, and you could even say it nurtures it through the First Amendment. But all of that means nothing if people are not willing to recognize that opinions that differ from theirs are just as valid.
