I want to hear this from the radio and TV pundits. Never mind the bloggers - most people listen to the radio or watch the Sunday shows and if the Right is sincere in its non-defense of Craig then the message needs to be spread over the airwaves. Otherwise, this is all just a pile of manure.

Think Rush or Sean have the balls to come out and condemn Craig (and Foley et al)? I won't bet on it.

Corruption; how many senators were implicated in the Abramof corruption scandal?
Out right lying; Too many to count.
Small Government; The Democrats reduced the federal government with Al Gore, as VP, himself reducing it by over 300k (non-military) jobs while the Republicans have created the largest Government in US History!
Flat Taxes; an original Liberal idea, the Republicans pay lip service to while merely reducing taxes for those who don’t need it.
Public Schools; since when is the Republican US Government supposed to be most concerned with private not public schools which is their function?
Terrorism; besides all the red herrings, cherry picked intelligence and out right lying the scare mongerers have done on this issue, to add insult to injury, we are now supporting Sunni not Shia tribes! Sunni tribes are exactly what Bin Laden IS, and most Sunni tribes including those were paying now, support him. We ARE paying and supporting our enemies, while if we had a brain we would have supported Saddam’s enemies the Shia, Iraq’s dominate population, and alienated Iran’s influence I the area at the same time in doing so.
The war on intelligence, science or reason this administration has conducted for the last 7 years has set social development back in America by 50 years.

Goldwater's campaign advisers pleaded with Barry to make it an issue in the '64 campaign as the Goldwater was badly trailing LBJ. With every one of these stories about Republican sexual laxity that comes out, it becomes clearer just why they feel they have to legislate everyone else's morality: It's because they are unable to control themselves and because they can't, they don't think anyone else can either. Gay marriage must be stopped because if being gay is acceptable, they have no excuse to remain closeted. Adultery must be punished because if it is, it might act as a deterrent to THEM when THEY are tempted to stray. I once had a fundie tell me that Christians fall because Satan targets them specifically -- as if Satan and God are playing Skee-Ball at the Jersey Shore in a Kevin Smith movie and Satan gets 100 bonus points if he gets a Christian to do the nasty -- 500 bonus points if it's same-sex nasty. Frankly, I think it's more likely that the people who adhere to this particularly punitive form of Christianity do so because without it they have no brakes on their impulses whatsoever.

Male on male sex in public restrooms was extensively studied by Laud Humphreys for his PhD dissertation at Washington University in 1968. His book Tearoom Trade: Impersonal Sex in Public Places published in 1970 was based on this dissertation. Some of the interesting findings of his research was that 54% of men engaged in this activity were married and living with their wives. 38% of the study group were clearly neither homosexual or bisexual. It also seems that most of these men were highly educated and successful within the community.

I feel sorry for Senator Craig. Sorry that he had to remain in the closet and could not be true to himself and who he really is. So many homosexuals have had to come out of the closet and face the world. A task not made easy by the conservative right wing moral majority. When as a society are we going to wake up and realize tolerence and acceptance of all of God's people is going to bring us closer to the world that Christ must have deemed possible to achieve? I feel sorry for Senator Craig the man, but not as a politician. For as a politician his hypocracy is inexcusable.

We would not be prone to these kind of "scandals" if we left issues of sexual orientation, fidelity and marriage to the individual to decide what is morally right or wrong for them.

There are so much greater issues that we must confront in out society than to be dwelling on each others sex lives. His bathroom conduct is not acceptable behavior but when men are forced to stay in the closet these types of things are going to happen.

Being true to one's sexual orientation should not be a matter of politics, left or right. The sooner gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual persons can live their lives openly and with out repercussions and with the same rights and privilidges everyone else has sooner we heal our moral wounds and move on. Yes, I feel sorry for Senator Craig, but sorrier for our country that this has to be an issue.

M. Boley, I have lived through the hell that Senator Craig is going through. I was arrested and convicted for whispering something in a undercover woman cops ear one spring night in Tucson. The whisper was all I did and yet I was charge with soliciting. I spent 8 long years fighting the charge. No money, no sex, just talk. Between adults in private - and I'm not married. I spent 15 days in jail. It cost me $8000 to defend myself and I ended up losing my job, my career, and many many friends. It was my first and only offense. I do not agree with this man's politics, and frankly he should resign if his own lifestyle choices conflict with his ability to represent his state. But the government must finally get out of our private lives. As it turned out Walter Jenkins did leave the LBJ administration, but returned to work for LBJ when LBJ retired. Jenkins and his family greatly appreciated Goldwater's kindness, and Craig deserves the same consideration. If I see Craig's wife and family stand by him and defend his actions, I'm satisfied!

For the person who felt offended by my remarks, I am not an apoligist. Senator Craig signaled his request for a consentual encounter, the gentleman was an adult and perfectly free to say no. Therefore had an encounter taken place if both parties were free to say no it would have been consentual. The policeman was admittedly waiting in the stall to catch homosexuals wanting sex in the bathroom he in some way indicated that he was open to the idea. I strongly doubt a Senator would have risked his reputation if there was no indication that his approach would have been welcome. I do not apoligize for his behavior, I just think that it is none of our business, nor was it the business of the courts. I am solidly anti-republican, but I don't think this is something that anyone should be attacked for as long as all parties are adults and as long as all parties can say no if they do not want to participate.

Lisa: Actually, the Republicans will probably jettison him rather than keep him. Ironically, even though we control the world and the justice system, it seems that Republicans actually go to prison or resign in these situations.

Craig's biggest potential crime here may be that he solicited, but did not receive, sex in a public place. He won't be defended by Republicans for doing this if it is indeed true and especially if he lies about it. He'll deserve what he gets, if only for his arrogance.

But some arrogant people don't get what they deserve when soliciting and actually receiving sexual favors in a publicly owned venue while being just as dishonest and disloyal to his wife and family and knowingly lying about it to an official legal entity.

Sometimes they keep their job, go on to get rich and for whatever reason garner the adulation and even admiration of their constituents for pulling it off. They are not considered hypocrites primarily because they never held themselves up to a standard of behavior that when violated could be considered hypocritical.

I'm not allowed to say who such a person might be in this blog. I'm told it's not fair or relevant to bring up a certain 8 year period of the past other than the Reagan and Nixon administrations. It's kind of hypocritical, if you ask me, but that is apparently the rule.

It's amazing how we pass judgement on each other in this country. If all of the skeletons came out of YOUR closet (no pun intended) could you stand up to public scrutiny? I'm sure we've had senators and house reps with questionable things in their past but they served us well in government. Yes the Senator made a mistake and now has a criminal record that will affect him in the future. With all the media scrutiny, he's just being human and trying to put spin on a mess (wouldn't we all do the same thing?). Rather than focus your blogging time on something like this, spend some time bringing some new liberals or conservatives to America's politics. Once we get voting participation up to 75-80% of the ENTIRE population, then we will have a government that is truly "for the people, and by the people". Trust me, people with questionable practices get noticed a lot faster when everybody is involved in the process-not preaching to each other (like this blog) all day. In short, let's move on!

As a bisexual male who used to do the same kind of stuff, I feel bad for him. It's a hell of a way to go down. He was obviously cruising. No question. After reading the arrest report, though, I think it's clearly entrapment. Basically, If someone taps their foot in a stall, they are asking if you want sex. If you don't, then don't tap back. Pretty simple. It's not illegal to tap your foot. If the other person doesn't know the signal, they won't respond. If they do know the signal, they know how to respond. The cop tapped back. Entrapment. Now if you are stupid enough to go further with it in public and get caught by an innocent bystander, by all means you should be arrested. He didn't go that far. He is right in that what he did wrong was to plead guilty. He could have fought it and won.

There should be no connection between this man's public record and his right to privacy. We have too many double standards in our society right now. If he were openly gay and got arrested, fewer people would make hay out of this. Because this man's actions are open to interpretation, just like mine were in 1999, I cannot ask him to resign simply because he plead guilty to a disorderly charge. Sex and human interpersonal relationships are a very complicated. He plead guilty to rid himself of the nuisance.

I would have an issue with him if he actually engaged in sex in the bathroom, even just masturbated, because no one has a right to do that in public - in private yes. But in Craig's case there isn't enough here to outright condemn him and his gesturing, while unusual, isn't really our business. Even if he is a hypocrite, there are plenty of them in Washington and I'm still ok with the hypocrisy of closet gays just as I am ok with trial lawyers in favor of tort reform. How dare we as a people insist that anyone must disclose their sexual preferences and relationships in order to run for public office.

I don't want perfect politicians, I want ones with a conscience. Craig got a wake up call here, and the next few days will confirm whether he has one.

Maybe one reason the Neos aren't leaping to his defense is that suspicions of his proclivities date back to 1982 during a prior sex with Congressional pages scandal.

I think they are thinking of burying this as quickly as possible and urging him to quit before perhaps some

Also last year there were allegations, of homosexual sex in Union Station with a prominent Republican, on the website of a gay activist who is on a mission to out some of these hypocritical pieces of garbage.

Even though this is on the public record including allegations in his own hometown paper, though not given much attention in the MSM, for some reason when I tried to post this before with more specifics, I was denied entry. Don't know why. I didn't even give a link.

So everone knows tapping ones foot does not get you arrested. I read the police report. It is posted on the internet. It states he looked into the stall several times. Waited for the guy in the next stall to leave. He then went into the vacated stall,moved his foot very close to the under cover officer. He kept moving his foot closer. He touched the foot of the officer more than once. This is what got him in trouble. Then he had his hand under the stall getting closer and closer to the under cover officer. One does not get arrested for just tapping a foot. Just wanted everyone to understand that the he said/ he said theory does not apply here. Once you read the police report you can see Craig apperas very worried about the whole thing, and wants this to get cleared up very fast. he also seems to feel everyoen else is beneath him and how dare they question him. After all he is a senator. I am sick of holier than thou attitudes certain GOP's and other people have. No one is perfect . Anyone can screw up. Remember this before you condem anyone. Why can't people let people be people? Does it matter who is gay? staright? black, Latino? etc.

If there is nothing to this, why would the Senator not have fought this to the hilt? He should have been able to march into that court room and state his innocence. After that he could have made it very clear that he would indeed have the legal power to make things very financially painful for the jurisdiction responsible, instead he copped a plea.

Here are more questions I have: how did he end up in that very bathroom known for liaisons? How did he just randomly meet multiple sequential indicators requesting a hook-up? I reiterate why cop a plea to make it go away; none of us are that dumb anything legal will show up in the news somewhere to haunt you.

Senator don’t insult our intelligence, you have sat on enough committees, debates, etc. Don’t pretend that you don’t understand the potential fall out of legal situations. Sorry, I wanted to make it go away does not cut it.

Finally, as an Idahoan, I call the Senator’s office yesterday demanding his resignation; I would encourage all other Idahoans to do so. Mr. Craig, you are a despicable hypocrite resign now!

The police officer had no reason to single him out, he had no clue who Craig was. He was investigating complaints (from others) of a pervert in the Men's room The Officer said that he saw Craig viewing him through the opening at the side of the stall doors, went into the adjoining stall, pushed his foot allllll the way over to the officers, then ran his hand (palm up) under the dividing stall wall...I wonder if Craig was just being friending and saying hello. LMAO

As far as I can see most of these posts either bash Republicans or Democrats. Why is political parties an issue? Seems to me the matter is based on personal behavior not on Senator Craig's political persuasion. The only other issue I see here is that this man has (like many other far right religious folks) portrayed himself as a good "Christian family man" which is obviously only for public consumption, not for the way he lives his private life. Most of the people I know and consider good Christians do not put down other people and are willing to accept the fact that they can only control their own lives, not the lives of others. That is the problem with the Bush Republicans and why they have gotten into trouble. They want to control everyone else and live their own lives without any control. I don't see an iota of difference in the Bush crowd and the Taliban and Islamic extremists. They all want to tell everyone else what they can do. That is not religion. That is power. Nothing more, nothing less. I still say we can now put Michael Vick up to run for congress because he has found Jesus too. And besides his crime doesn't involve sex, evolution or abortion so I'm sure he is a good Christian now.

Thank you for your comment. I often wonder about the posts on these blogs and whether being ignorant of spelling and grammar is the primary requirement for posting. It is an appalling fact that a large number of Americans no longer bother to learn their own language and I would bet they are the ones lobbying and screaming that we make English the "official" language of the United States and not allow signs and forms to be printed in any other language. Of course, most of these people have never traveled outside the United States or they would realize that almost every other country in the world posts signs and has info printed in English for all we Americans who cannot be bothered to learn any other language. Even in China on my trip two years ago, I discovered many places where English was included for the convenience of those of us who travel. What a country we have become. Sometimes I despair of what the future holds for my eight grandchildren.

Better go back & read all of the news articles because he was arrested for far more than simply tapping his foot.

His foot entered the adjacent stall & played footsie with the undercover police officer's foot. He also stared through the partition crack for over 2 minutes. He reached his hand into the adjacent stall palms up after playing footsie. He slid his senator's business card to the officer. The policeman was called because lewd behavior was reportedly ongoing in the washroom.

Finally Craig pleaded freaking GUILTY!

So by all means let the senator retract his plea so we can have a public trial carried by all of the major news networks. Then we can hear the exact details of how the senator was rubbing the officer's leg, etc.

Sorry but when a person is sitting on the commode they are in a most vulnerable position & a person should have a reasonable expectation that some creep is not going to violate the stall while a person uses the public restrooms.

Message to stall creeps, that is not the place to solicit for sex.

Message to people who must use the public restrooms. Carry an ice pick just for such emergencies when some creep violates your person while your on the pot. LOL

What pains me the most is the sad situation Craig's wife and family are in. Surely, over the years, she's known about his sexual indiscretions with other men, however, she did the "right" thing and stayed married. What about his children and grandchildren? I went to a public school like 90% of people in America and I had no special advantages (although spelling came easily for me). Yes, I appreciate the freedom we have here to speak our minds and I am glad young people are willing to defend that freedom. I have pride in my country and care about the rights of all citizens to express their opinion. It just seems that so much of what is written on internet posts indicates we are not doing a very good job of educating people. Just another thing the Bush administration has not accomplished with all their preaching about education and "No Child Left Behind". I am neither a pompous Republican nor an elitist liberal. I'm a 70 year old grandmother with a high school education. I have four children and eight grandchildren. I have tried to instill in my children and grandchildren the importance of education and so far it is working. I appreciate the freedom we all have to express our opinion and I do read these posts. It makes me sad to see how carelessly some people treat the English language that many profess to want to protect from corruption by immigrants and foreign visitors. I am always grateful when I travel to other countries to find that English is not a dirty word in their country.
So I still support your right to speak but would like to suggest that everyone proofread before posting since most mistakes are typos and not necessarily lack of knowledge.
Is that enough of going under a microscope for you?

I would like to hear testimony from the man who was in the stall on the right side of the police officer. The rights and the lefts in the report just do not add up in my mind, either that or the senator and the police officer practically did Yoga. According to the report, their was someone on the officer's right. That places the senator on the left. Therefore, he reached over to move his hands all along the stall whie keeping his feet planted on the floor, and the police officer reacher over with his right hand to present his badge. It just sees like a lot of bending and contorting while keeping your feet on the ground and your bum in the seat. When you are walking down the street and you see a penny, did you choose to look in that direction, or did it happen by some other force out of your control? How many times have looked down and noticed that child's shoe was untied? This will all play out in court and remember, he is innocent until proven guilty. He should have never pled guilty in the first place.Re: where he placed his bag. It's a bathroom stall. The bag has to go in front. It isn't going to go in the back, no room on the sides, blocking paper, etc. Re: foot movement. If the senator was moving his foot and the police officer moved his foot towards the senator, then what? Whoever invents a divider to close the gaps in the stall doors will be loaded!
Is the senator right or left handed? If he is left handed, he is in more jeapordy! If he is right handed, then he would have used his right hand, not his left hand to swipe underneath the stall divider.
An average lawyer can figure this out and create reasonable doubt. Consider what is happening to him in the meantime. What a nightmare!!

It's funny, but Craig might have had a chance to be acquitted if he went to trial. It looks like Craig was indeed soliciting--but the cop "moved his foot up and down slowly" in response to Craig's footsying. I don't know the legal specifics, but it seems some case could be made for entrapment: arresting him for something the cop was pretty clearly trying to encourage. If that didn't work, and you have to guess it probably wouldn't have--here you have to grant the cop familiarity with the local statutes etc.--Craig could argue against the cop's exact version of events. Maybe a jury would be more outraged by this kind of behavior on the part of the cop, than they would have been by what Craig was doing. Chances of that may be small, but you never know.

Alas, the publicity involved in a trial would have been worse for Craig and his hypocritically moralizing bunch of party hacks. I'm sure he was hoping to cop a quick plea to a less damaging charge, hoping nobody would notice. However, the truth will out.

So let's recap: The Republican Party works hard to make gay men's lives miserable. But, oh, they do their best to protect Mark Foley while he chats up teenage pages, and how long did that go on? For quite a while. Again, the truth was outed (groan). In Craig's case, it seems there had been plenty of rumors about his sexuality over the years. That's the kind of thing no sane voter should care about, especially if Craig hadn't taken such a publicly anti-gay stance, coming out against gay marriage etc. Apparently not too many people did care: national media didn't pick up on anything about him (not that I recall, at least) until this incident.

And we all remember the cries for Bill Clinton's scalp, over intern hanky-panky, and false statements relating thereto for a lawsuit that was thrown out for lack of merit. Larry Flynt helped out some of the Republican scalp-seekers as adulterers.

Tough. If you moralize like they and Craig did, and you're shown to be a flaming hypocrite, then you readied your stall and you have to sit in it.

You have spent a lot of time rationalizing just what actions both of these parties "might" have taken. Why don't you just accept the fact that some of these right wing, holier than thou politicians are not what they seem and are just plain humans after all with all the faults and failings of the whole human race. Most people are willing to live and let live as long as someone doesn't take a stand on issues that infringes on the rights of others. I'm quite willing to accept that Senator Craig likes sex with men but he needs to be honest about it and not go around preaching "family values" to everyone else under false pretenses of holiness. A lot of these posts speak about the hypocrisy exhibited by this story and that is what most people find objectionable. Just be honest and don't preach one thing and practice something entirely different. That goes for every person, not just politicians.

I think you people need to read the arrest record. I think there is some doubt at intent. The arresting officer did not have any verbal request, I think he should have waited for that for assurance of intent. I fly alot and put my suitcase in front of me in the stall (there isn't anywhere else to put it) The guilty plea was for disorderly conduct and making another person uncomfortable.For that he must of felt guilty, he should have requested a lawyer to best make a plea. Everyone is running with this as if there was a lot more to this. This 'may' be true, but it is now just gossip and exploitation. Which has become the norm these days. Many people write of intolerance and judgement by others when indeed the posters are more so than those they write of.

Let me get some of this straight. You stare through the crack in door jam of the stall for several minutes. You then enter and proceed to take a wide stance touching the foot of the person that is in the stall next to you in his proper place ,something that only people with long web feet could achieve. You then practice some fancy tap dance that you recently were taught in the senate. Then you decide to pick up paper from the other stall off the bathroom floor. I am sure all of us do that all the time. Then when told you have stalked a police officer you exclaim NO in your most flabbergasted style.Then you decide well all of this is just a big misunderstanding so I guess I'll just cop out to a lighter charge. Make sense to you? This man plead guilty! He is suffering sinners remorse. By the way if it had been me in the stall the senator would have spit in his eye at the beginning. What scares me is how many people can understand his logic and give him some leeway.
