For one of our nation's law makers to claim that he should have, in hindsight, sought the advice of an attorney before pleading guilty is laughable. Either he should resign immediately due to his woeful lack of basic legal knowledge or he should resign for his hypocrisy as an obviously closeted gay man. He pled guilty for one reason only - in the hope that the whole matter would blow over and somehow stay out of the headlines. Since his arrest on June 11, he must have thought he had escaped resulting notoriety becuase the story had not made the news. A trial on the facts of the case would have subjected him to greater scrutiny and would have assuredly made national headlines. Unfortunately, Mr. Craig continues to deceive himself, his wife, his family, the state of Idaho and the nation in his denial that he is gay. Those close to him should urge him to seek counseling, confess his mistakes and accept his sexuality. The only thing wrong with being gay is denying it.

For all those with their heads in the sand, let me remind you that the likely main reason Craig pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct is because he was originally also charged with "interference with privacy". This is a much more serious offense that is characterized as a crime involving sexual or attempted sexual misconduct such as being a Peeping Tom or engaging in lewd public behavior.

It is punishable by up to a year in jail and a $3000 fine.

Disorderly conduct is a catchall charge that might not have a sexual implication at all. Im not really sure whether the first charge carries the stigma of being a sex offender or not, but definitely carries the connotation of sexual deviate behavior.

For those of you who think that he was just playing footsie, here is a report from the Idaho Statesman as of today unexpurgated:

A 40-year-old professional man with close ties to Republican officials told the Idaho Statesman he had oral sex with Sen. Larry Craig at Washington's Union Station, probably in 2004.

The man spoke to the Statesman on the condition he not be named. He said he was sure it was Craig he had oral sex with but said he had no evidence other than his word.

Craig denied the allegations, and said, "I am not gay and I have never been in a restroom in Union Station having sex with anybody.

"There's a very clear bottom line here," Craig said. "I don't do that kind of thing. I am not gay, and I never have been."

Here is what the man told the Statesman, with some of the details of the men's room encounter edited out:

"Upon walking into Union Station one day, I made eye contact with a well-dressed older gentleman whom I recognized as Sen. Craig. We, after having made eye contact for 30 seconds or so, we began walking towards one of the restrooms in Union Station.

"I followed him in there. We went to the urinals, where we both unzipped ...

"The restroom became busy, too busy to do anything. So we zipped up and then followed each other to the second restroom in Union Station, where we began the same process. And had a -- I also performed fellatio for a very, very short amount of time, as that restroom became busy as well. At that point we both zipped up and left and went on our separate ways.

"Walking time included I would say maybe three minutes, four minutes. Not very long.

"It was unmistakable. I mean, I just recognized him, you know, as being Sen. Craig. I just didn’t have any doubt in my mind that that’s who it was. And when the encounter was over I proceeded to search on the internet and confirm that you know with a picture of him, and sure enough it was him.

"I contacted Mike Rogers via email after having read on his web site he was at that point outing staff members, which I am less comfortable as a gay person outing staff members than people like Sen. Craig who are actually voting on legislation negatively affecting gay people as they are themselves having gay sex.

"I’ve always been interested in politics and probably if you showed me pictures of the hundred senators I could probably name 75 or 80 of them. And that would be true over the last probably 20 years. So, I don’t think it’s unusual that I did recognize him. There’s no doubt in my mind that that’s who it was."

You will note that to put it delicately, the Senator
allegedly performed first and then the other gentleman reciprocated somewhat.

Holders of U.S. government security clearances are required to report ANY arrest. If Craig didn't do this he has yet more consequences to face. Any effectiveness he may have had as senator are cleary gone. He must step down NOW. And hopefully he will get past the denial stage and deal with his demons.

What I'd really like to know are these things: Did Larry Craig vote FOR proposals, such as DOMA or anything against equal marriage rights? Did he vote AGAINST proposals, such as Hate crimes legislation & equal rights for ALL, including sexual orientation (real or perceived), either at the state of federal levels? I haven't checked those things out just yet but the smart money bets that he voted just as you'd expect from a hypocritical closet case ...totally against himself! Yeah, that's it HP, you are right. Bush is outing Craig to take attention away from himself. Also, Rove has left the WH, but he left his weather machine behind, and Bush is still using it for his own maniacal deeds to conjure up all these storms we've been having, you know, to take attention away from the WH. And that eclipse we had the other day - Bush did that too. He needed the cover of darkness to destroy the mid-west corn crop so the price of ethanol fuel would go up.

HP, they do have pills that treat paranoia. You may want to look into getting some. They can now be mixed with gin just so people like you will like them even more.

Independent, I too feel the same way and commented briefly on another thread that no matter what his proclivities, Craig has walked in Gay shoes in the sense that he now should know firsthand the unequal treatment gays get for what is essentially a pickup versus what happens to heteros. Actually sexual activity in a public place or restroom is another matter. There is a reason people yell "get a room" to over-amorous couples in public.

I have heard or learned of a number of innocents who have pled guilty to an charge merely because they can't afford to fight it or because they want to want to get the matter past them. Many are those who have no confidence in the judicial branches particularly the criminal side.

My friend, Judge Ralph Adam Fine of the Wisconsin Court of Appeals, has written a book on the corrupt system of plea bargaining, Escape of the Guilty. The title is in part misleading because the 'system' not only works to allow the guilty to go free, but, as Judge Fine says in an related article, operates also to make the innocent suffer. In the article, he concludes with this:

“The dual aim of our criminal justice system is ‘that guilt shall not escape or innocence suffer,“’ according to the US. Supreme Court in United States v. Nobles. Tragically, plea bargaining and all its fictions, poses, and expediencies permit both the guilty to escape and the innocent to suffer. As a result, none of us is truly safe. Just as we would not permit “grade bargaining” in our schools, we should not permit “plea bargaining” in our courts of “justice.”

Now I will say that I don't know whether Sen. Craig entered a guilty plea because of a fear of worse punishment or bad publicity or what. And I certainly don't know whether a plea bargain was involved. Or whether he was actually guilty or not. Moreover, as the alleged "victim" was a cop, one has to wonder whether the alleged crime was a "victimless" one.

In any case, it's about as unseemly as the conduct he was accused of to turn this into a contest to see who can spew the most coarse ridicule of the man. What he really needs, guilty or innocent, is a dose of Judeo-Christian charity and certainly not the pile-driving he has been getting here and elsewhere.

I must admit to being more than just slightly amused by this most recent sex scandal on the part of another oh-so-righteous "conservative" defender of faith and virtue. At the same time, I am not particulary perturbed by the private sexual behavior of our elected officials - as long as they keep out of MY bedroom, I would be more than happy to keep out of THEIRS. A bit less hypocrisy would nonetheless be apprciated.
It is important, of course, for the public to be aware of precisely who these officials are REALLY screwing and I hope that the press can become even more vigilent as the public's watchdog. For the most part, it is the middle and lower class that always gets screwed by these individuals and the corporations to which they are beholden. THAT is the real scandal here - Sex stories, endless coverage of Paris Hilton's escapades etc. keep us entertained but divert us from from far greater dangers.
