That's what gets me about people being so upset of candidates admitting, recently, that there has been some progress in Iraq when they said some time ago that there wasn't. Things change every day. As a strong Dem., I would love to see us win everything we want in that damn war but if we CAN'T, thank I say get out. If we can, without loosing another 3500 people, then for God's sake, "get er done".

Hell, even though I'm a Hillary supporter, I would go for any of the Dems. I think Edwards would be great too, but I don't think he can win in the GE.

President Carter wrote a book about Israel that doesn't flatter the Israeli government, and he suddenly is susceptible to the charge of being anti-semitic. Perhaps Mr. Allby could explain why being critical of the Israeli government for (1) systematically driving Palestinians out of Israel and (2)annexing through placement of Jewish settlements the land it conquered in 1967, which Israel has refused to surrender for over 40 years despite numerous UN sanctions demanding it do so, and (3)for carving up the land it has yet to annex completely to create an apartheid state separating Palestinians not only from Israeli Jews but also from other Palestinians living in Israel means Carter is anti-semitic.

I'm sure AIPAC, the American-Israeli Political Action Committee, the most powerful lobbyists in Washington who spread America's aid to Israel around to members of the House and the Senate, believes that even a single word critical of Israel means the utterer is anti-semitic, but that's not what more rational people who have examined Israel's history, like Carter, have concluded.

It's about time that AIPAC's propaganda is finally being challenged.

I really don't agree with Edwards on ridding the planet of nuclear weapons. Its a bit of an understatement to say it would take cooperation from other countries. The technology is out there. Just don't see any way for that to work.

When you start a general election with a 47% unfavorable (Hilary's CONSISTENT number), you have basically no shot to win, let alone govern.

Take a look at the GE numbers for both this race and previous. Edwards was, is, and will be the best match-up for Dems against all of the Republican front runners.

Do some more research on how candidates tend to fare when they have high negatives. It isn't pretty.

On the War In Iraq: Many ask, what happened to the country that led the world to victory in erope and the Pacific in WWI and WWII. Aside from the fact that there was world wide support for both WWI and II, we see now that it is far easier to drive an occupying force out of someone elses country thatn to occupy a country. Also evidenced in Korea, Vietnam, Afganastan (Russians) and even France in WWII. If we had never shown up, Germany would have continued to suffer losses from the French Resistance and the English until they finally gave up just like russia did in Afganastan an we did in Vietnam and Korea. The war, defeating the Iraqi army was easy. We had the bigger force and technologically surperior weapons. Occupation requires a relative small number of "good guys" limited in action by the "good guy code" to control an insurgency hiding amongst millions of innocents who don't like you ery much since you killed their father, husband, brother, cousin, etc.. the next question is, how do you resolve thousands of years of religious differences, tribal fudes and gang land power struggles. Sadam did it by throwing out the "good guy code", killing and terrorizing anyone who deposed him, heavily arming his followers (ever wonder where all those guns and explosives came from)and keeping the masses just content enough to tolerate him ( there were not a lot of starving Iraqis inthe pre war videos). The insurgents know this and will do anything to prevent resolution of religious differences, fuel tribal fudes and destroy what little infrastructure we try to build back to maintain an angry and hungry populous.

Usually when Republicans attack Democratic candidates it raises my ire and I feel protective towards them. I don't get defensive when people criticize Edwards, which I think might be why he's my choice. And once elected, he would be an aggressive, savvy and hands on President, promoting One America. That's what I want.

How can Lauren write, "All of these items clearly cost money, and Edwards proposed paying for health care specifically by cutting Bush's tax cuts. He did mention how he would pay for the other changes."

Her list of proposals: "In combating poverty, Edwards called for (1) truly universal health care; (2) a higher raise in the minimum wage; (3) an expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit and removal of its marriage penalty; (4) the strengthening of workers' rights to organize unions in work places; and (5) strong national predatory lending laws."

1. She acknowledges he pays for.
2. Minimum wage = de minimis cost, if any (additional DOL funding for enforcement? De miminimus at best).
3. EITC expandsion: true.
4. Union organizaing? Again, either de minimis DOL costs or none at all.
5. Predatory lending laws? Again, de minimis enforcement by the FTC or banking regulators.

Basically, nearly all of Edwards agenda is covered, $ wise (only health care would cost more than a month or two or Iraq). And I am sure the genuione real effort to collect all owed taxes would pick up that "discrepancy."

This is embarassing.

I disagree that Edwards can't win the general election. In fact, the only Democrats since Kennedy who have become president have been from the south. That said, Edwards has been way ahead of the pack on all the important issues. His "two Americas" frame certainly fits my experience in the legal profession as well as healthcare and education. I like all the Democratic candidates, but Edwards is the one I feel really gets it. And I loooove Elizabeth.
