I have this funny feeling Mitt Romney is going to be the nominee. He looks good on camera and considering all the problems the GOP has had to contend with lately, he might be their choice.

There appears to be too much baggage with Giuliani and McCain. Thompson may be too little, too late.

I never thought Romney had a realistic shot at this thing but now I wonder. He's not my choice but I think he's looking better and better to the republicans.

The Republicans will like him. He's not too crazy about Democrats. He didn't much like us when he was here, which wasn't too often.

My mother the Republican says Romney should be called Slick Mitch because he is every bit as slippery as Bill Clinton.

But then, consider your options. There is McCain who is (sadly) too committed to his Iraq war stance to really make a good choice right now. His time was 2000, and it's unfortunate he didn't get the nomination then. Then you have Rudy who is a Republican in the loosest sense of the word, at least from what I can tell. Now there is Fred who, as Pat said, may be too little too late. The other candidates are not serious threats, as far as I can tell...although you never know what can happen between now and then.

Romney looks good and he speaks well. He's already got one up on George (maybe two depending on your preferences) and we elected George twice.

People said the same things about Kennedy when he ran for the presidency "He's catholic, so we can't vote for him" and what happened then? The same thing will happen in '08. Americans will do as they have always done; they will pick the person they feel is best suited for the job. In this case (from recent polls) Mitt Romney will probably win. And that won't be a bad thing. Put his faith aside, and Romney is clearly the best candidate. Now add back in his faith and he looks even more appealing to the public. Oh, by the way, wasn't this country founded on religious freedom? That goes for the leader of our nation too. If we don't descriminate against someone because of their race, color, religion, or sex when it comes to employment, shouldn't those sames standards apply here?

I worked on the Salt Lake City Olympics and have met Mitt. I always found him to be an honorable and personable man with sound ethics and a keen intellect. This is one democrat that will vote for him if he wins the nomination.

Look at the fantastic job a staunch protestant has done. A Mormon couldn't do much worse.

Romney's biggest hurdle is his past liberal political positions on social issues (i.e. gay rights, abortion, etc.) He's been dubbed the "flip-flop" candidate. But Hilary (the most likely Dem nominee) has the same problem.

A Romney-Clinton race would be the most interesting of the potential match-ups, especially because they both have enormous war chests, so we would get to see a lot from them (mostly to see how they spend their money - not what they have to say.)

I'm astounded.
I don't know how else to say it.
I just continue to be amazed at the number of Republicans who are so easily conned, duped and hoodwinked by Willard Mitt Romney.
I'm not sure there are any facts I could offer that would dissuade his minions from supporting their messiah. It's an emotional thing. They have found their political savior, and nothing he has ever said or done previously or in the future is likely to convince them they saddled the wrong pony.
Here's the latest bulletin that will fall on deaf ears: The born-again pro-lifer, who swears he had a Damascus Road experience on the issue of abortion, currently owns stock in two companies involved in embryonic stem cell research.

It was just two years ago that Romney explained his sudden and late transformation on the issue of life: "In considering the issue of embryo cloning and embryo farming, I saw where the harsh logic of abortion can lead to the view of innocent new life as nothing more than research material or commodity."
In other words, Romney claims to have awakened to the harsh realities of abortion by studying the issue of embryonic stem cell research.
First, from a logical standpoint, this makes no sense. If you can't see why stabbing an unborn baby in the head with a pair of scissors is an overtly evil act, I don't think any amount of study of embryonic stem cell research will awaken your sense of moral outrage. But that's what Romney would like us to believe. After all, he's got to explain why he discovered so late in his public life that people have an inherent right to life.
But now we're supposed to believe that this gazillionaire, worth about $250 million, didn't even bother to examine his own financial portfolio to see how he was actively supporting the killing of unborn babies with his own investments.
Or, are we supposed to believe this was just an oversight? If so – if this guy is so cavalier about his own investments – how are we supposed to trust him with the federal budget?
This list of flip-flops by Mitt Romney is legendary – enough to get him a regular role in Doonesbury. But let's review a few of the classics:
• Immigration: As late as last year, the candidate who now ridicules amnesty proposals said: "I don't believe in rounding up 11 million people and forcing them at gunpoint from our country. With these 11 million people, let's have them registered, know who they are. Those who've been arrested or convicted of crimes shouldn't be here; those that are here paying taxes and not taking government benefits should begin a process toward application for citizenship, as they would from their home country.'' Wasn't that pretty much the Bush party line?
• Gun control: He supported bans on so-called "assault weapons." He supported the Brady bill. He spurned the National Rifle Association. As late as 2002, he was still defending Massachusetts' confiscatory gun laws. But, last year, he joined the NRA and claimed to favor easing licensing requirements.
• Minimum wage: In 1994, he opposed an increase, but offered as a compromise tying a hike to the rate of inflation. By 2002, he supported an increase. In 2006, he vetoed an increase. Like some other notable politicians of the recent past, he was against it before he was for it, before he was against it.
• Same-sex marriage: In 1994, he opposed the federal marriage amendment and promised to help establish "full equality for America's gays and lesbians." In 2002, he provided legal recognition to same-sex couples in Massachusetts, even though he was not required to do so under a state Supreme Judicial Court ruling, as he has suggested. Yet, now, in 2007, he miraculously supports the federal marriage amendment.
• Homosexuals in the military: In 1994, he supported "don't ask, don't tell," saying it was a step toward "gays and lesbians being able to serve openly and honestly in our nation's military." Today he claims he doesn't want to change the policy to permit homosexuals from serving openly in the military.
• Tax cutting: In 1994, he opposed a cut in the capital gains tax. In 2002, he refused to sign a "no new taxes" pledge. In 2007, he claims to support a cut in capital gains taxes. He has taken the "no new taxes" pledge. And he says he supports making President Bush's tax cuts permanent.
I could go on. This list is virtually never-ending with this charlatan. But it won't matter to the Romney faithful, who now accuse me of religious bigotry for pointing out the obvious flaws in this man's worldview, his character and his political record. They say I am only doing this because I hate Mormons.

I am not going to comment on the validity of the Mormon churches take on Christianity. However, the mere fact that Mitt Romney is a Mormon is going to be a factor, and much more so as other Midwest evangelicals,coastal catholics, and individuals generally unfamiliar with the Mormon tenets of faith begin to really consider him as a viable candidate. It is dangerous to make the comparison between Romney and JFK because even though there were questions of his connection to the catholic church he was able to make the affirmative statement that his faith would not have an affect on his politics. The problem is that Mitt Romney cannot make that statement, 1. because he has already made statements to the contrary and 2. any statement of that type would certainly be received a disingenuous to "faithful" voters. His latest proposition that voters want a man of faith rather than a man of a particular faith is a politically savy strategy. However, evangelicals wary of the faith will invariably remain the same, unmoved, while the unknowledgable will begin to ask probing questions because of his open profession of faith. Undoubtably, some of the more (and pardon the characterization) quirky, controversial, and unknown aspects of the faith such as - temple sealing, special undergarments, and the churche's dubious, racist, and relatively recent dealing with people of color will have to be explained. Some might claim that catholics and their belief in papal infalibility, or muslims and their belief in a very "carnally" rewarding afterlife are equally as quirky or controversial. However, these faiths enjoy the benefit of being passively validated, if not accepted by the mere passage of time. For this reason, if Mitt Romney continues to emphasize his faith, he will have to answer question about that faith, how much of it he believes, and to explain those beliefs. It is an untenable situation for any politician to endure, but such is the life. In short his profession of faith in this instance may well prove, in part, his undoing.
However, I believe that Romney's cache will also ebb in part as he is forced to explain both his present position and voting record on key conservative issues such as gay marriage, universal healthcare, and womens reproductive health rights. He will either be reviled for remaining consistent or be repudiated for being inconsistent. Either way his past political positions will be the other part that damns his chances within the party.
I believe that Romney is devout and for that reason he is appealing to people of faith, however, as a politician he leaves much more to be desired. He is well qauffed, wholesome, afforable, and rather well spoken, but, these things make you a great citizen, not a world leader. People may want a man of faith, but they also want the well rounded politician.

It's alarming to me that people even bring up religions affiliation as a reason to vote/not vote for a presidential candidate. The presidency is a government position, and, by law, potential candidates cannot be discriminated against based on factors such as race, gender, religion, etc. No one brings up the personal beliefs of any of the other candidates- Romney's should not come up either. If he is the best person for the job, then vote for him, whether you have the same religious beliefs or not! I am LDS, but do not plan on voting for him myself, because I think other candidates are better for the job.

Jim Burger, John Doe, et al;I notice a common theme among people who dislike this guy solely for his Mormonism. It usually goes something like this:

"I've lived in Utah long enough to know that Mormons are ____" and then fill in the blank with the appropriate disparaging blanket statement followed with more solid reasoning: "So, a Mormon president will ruin the country because Mormons suck".

This leads me to 2 conclusions: First, you are comfortable in a vernacular of naked bigotry, and Second, either you are signing in under multiple names and saying the same thing worded slightly differently, or you and a group of maybe a dozen or so friends are using this formula to create the impression for the rest of us that millions of people out there have been exiled from Utah for being "Gentiles" Which, I might add, I have never heard any Mormon ever call a person who is not a member of their church. Are you part of an online ministry or something?

Just relax, Romney won't win, and even if he did, America wouldn't be a Mormon tent revival for 4 years. How many people are planning on switching churches if Romney is elected? Let's see a show of hands...Give the Mormon stuff a rest already.

I would LOVE someone to do some research on how many of those sweet, wholesome mormon boys join the military and choose to serve our country. It seems to me, that they have bigger, better plans for THEIR children and they leave defending the country to the "other" people.

Mormons believe they are the "chosen" people and they only tolerate other people/religions when it suits them. As soon as their children reach a certain age, they are barely allowed to associate w/non mormons. This is a very scary "religion" and they conveniently have "visions" when their weird beliefs become too public or scrutinized - basically when it becomes obvious that they are going to have too much public pressure or have trouble recruiting new members.

I guess I am not surprised by all the anti-mormon crap on the comments. I have seen it before and it is usually from some unknowledgeable person or ex-mormon who couldn't live the beliefs and then strives to prove the contrary so they can validate themselves.

As for the point about not serving in the military, personally I served 6 years in the Airforce Reserves. I also served 2 years on a mission in France for my Church. I knew a ton of other members in the military and most of my friends in the military were very accepting of my beliefs. My dad was 20 years in the Active Airforce and my Grandfather was 20 years and recieved the Silver Star for serving during the invasion of Italy in WWII.

Romney would make a good President and I am throwing my support and money behind him.

You can call it a polygamist cult as much as you want. The muslims are polybamists, the Mormons are not. The Jews were polygamists until the year 1,000 B.C. They only stopped because of persecution. Jesus comes from a polygamist family himself (trace his ancestry and you will find Abraham (a polygamist) and Israel (Jacob) another one and Solomon (a big time polybamist with 700 wives and 300 concubines and the Bible says his sin was to worship the strange gods of some of those wives.). So, although the Mormons don´t practice a Bible practice they would not be so wrong if they did. The only reason they don´t is because Americans would kill them if they continued, not because Americans did not have many "wives" but because they were very ignorant and jealous of the Mormon explosion of converts with cities like Nauvoo with 20,000 people or so. So in Utah, the practice stopped because one of the creeds of the religion is to abide with the laws of the land. Some people in Washington D.C. made then a law against polygamy that did not exist until then and the practice stopped. That law affected all Muslims too. Condemn polygamy all you want. Romney is an exception of a man who stuck with one wife for a long time.

How can so many people be so blind? Don´t go ask Baptists what the Catholic Church teaches. Ask a Catholic Priest!!!! Go visit the official site of the LDS Church and read what they believe and you will see that they are C-H-R-I-S-T-I-A-N-S !!!!!!!!!!!

This is extremely disheartening.

The people here are most likely the voting public, and all I see are angry messages of hatred and distrust.

One sentence you preach compassion and in the next you call them freaks. I won't defend or attack any religion. I did my share of soul searching during college and I read through their bible and spoke to their representatives. It was not for me.

They required a lot of faith. Their bible was written by a man and as you all have vindicated in this very thread, my lack of faith in mankind was not ill-placed.

If you cannot follow the lessons your own faith strictly (by not judging unlest ye be judged) then who is to say Romney does? I laugh whenever the outspoken political debaters toss up minute details about a persons traditions in order to convince us that they of course, must be the most devout followers of aforementioned religion.

As far as I'm concerned every President we've ever had has left a blazing trail of Godless acts of deceit, corruption and tradgedy.
