How about finding and prosecuting the leakers! I'm tired of hearing about classified leaks, anonymous quotes, to remain anonymous because not allowed to speak, etc, etc. If it's classified, then its a crime to leak it. Both the leaker and the reporter, and editor should go to jail. If you can't report your sources name, then don't report it's then just gossip. Our media is as crooked as the politicians they report on.

Anyone who expects this Patraeus report to be anything but another Bush excuse to keep running the military into the ground until he leaves office is as crazy as the people who try to tell the GAO report is not believable. It is all too believable.

The surge is a failure as anyone with a brain knew it would be. The only success it can report is a lessening of violence in Anbar and how did the administration do that? By giving arms to the Sunnis. If a democrat did that, all these Bush-lovers would be screaming bloody murder instead of blaming the GAO for telling the truth.

You are aware that most government reports, documents, etc. are not classified, right? Then there are things like Sunshine laws and the Freedom of Information Act, whereby average everyday people are entitled to hear and see what the government is up to.

jerry - confused again. This IS the real deal. This was the report put out by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), not a left or right group. Just like last time, Bush will have his folks adjust some of the findings. And, RH - it is a good thing that it was leaked... this was done because Bush had been re-writing these things prior to disclosing to congress and the American people, so the individual sent the data out there (correct, accurate, non-partisan and non-re-written data) before it could be tainted.

The "leaks" & "leakers" are by design. It's a way to get a jump on what the possible overall public opinion may be - a prototype if you will. I believe the quote from the report was, "The Iraqi government met 3, partially met 4, and did not meet 11 of its 18 benchmarks."

If it were simply pass/fail, there would be no "partially". This means that they passed on 3, partially passed/failed on 4, and failed on 11.

Yeah, let's blame the messenger and deflect the interest and maybe even the guilt. That's the Republican way as preached by Rove & co. Of course, when the media happens to be Fox News, the word is sacrosanct. The media asks the questions we'd ask if we had the access. The "journalist" in each and every person in that business relies upon and completely respects the US Constitution. Can we say with a straight face that the Bush Admin has the same attitude for that seminal document? The "real deal" will be a press release from the Bush clan indicating complete success in Iraq with the Surge. Or, they may also spin it to be a partial success with the necessity to have more troops sent to Iraq or have the ones already there stay longer, as more is better. I don't understand the double-standards in our country, as one president can be impeached for lying about having extra-marital sex and his successor lies about WMDs, torturing of prisoners, the presence of al Quaida being in cahoots with Saddam and misleads us all about everything to do with Iraq.

Personally, I believe the British general who quipped that he couldn't trust our Secty of Defense since Rummy's intelligence was bankrupt.

How many more deaths need to be seen and experienced in that sad, forelorn country of Iraq, before we see the truth that nothing we do can ever fix the situation we allowed (even encouraged with our invasion) to exist and grow? They are in a civil war and we are outsiders. We gave them the chance to fight and they stole our money and arms and began to kill each other as well as our soldiers. It is past the time to get the "H" out. IF we wish to help with peace in Iraq, we should get involved politically with other countries in the region, but only if they want us to be involved. We cannot use military to force anyone to be democratic. Of course, that is probably not the true reason for us being there. The real reason(s) lie in the minds of the architects and POTUS and VPOTUS. We have been taken for a ride the past 7 years and it's way past time for a change in our leadership. Fortunately, we have term limits and 2008 will see someone new. My only hope for us lies with a Dem Administration and one which does its level-set best in correcting all of the mistakes of the Bush Administration.

If a great squak goes up about something, the press sec may nuzzle up to the podium and deny any truth to the rumor. Otherwise, the rumor will be affirmed as true. This may not be used so much by the Bush White House, since Bush doesn't seem to care what the people think, or wants to give the impression he doesn't, but there may be instances where the Bushites would use this technique. So in such a case, the leaker would be someone in the White House.

Apparently, the GAO. First off, what in the world would they know about the war effort? Second, they say partially met for many items, but don't say if the partial is better, worse, or the same from last time. The report is meaningless without that information.

And, again, what does pass or fail mean? By what measure? Did they grade that 90 is an A, 80 is a B, etc.? Was there any extra credit? Can someone retake the test? What if you were sick when the test was given, do you get a zero? Was there this really smart country that screwed up the whole curve for all the other countries?

This report is meaningless. Just another report from someone that doesn't know what is going on.
