If you actually listened to Thompson's speech, he wasn't even talking about due process in court. He was just commenting on the "process as a whole". I happen to agree with Thompson. The one thing we did right in Iraq was capture Saddam and follow the law with respect to his imprisonment, trial and execution. We didn't take him out back and shoot him, although I'm sure there was temptation to do so. There will be an ever greater temptation to do so if we ever catch bin Laden. It would be a mistake for us to abandon the rule of law in favor of vigilante justice - regardless of how horrific the criminal is.

In a post up top, nuanced said Dean is too good for America. I agree that he is too good for most Americans, specifically those who voted for Bush. I am afraid Obama is also too good for America. People get the government they deserve, and too many really deserve Bush for Obama to be in our future. I'm afraid we will be lucky to get stuck with Hillary at this point in human evolution. I believe in due process as well.

It says a lot about our nation that Loyal Bushies are so scared, they can't handle the freedoms in our US Constitution anymore. Instead, they believe in vigilante justice, with them pointing the gun at the "evil" world.

I've tried to figure out how this belief in "instant judgement" happened to America's justice system.
Well, aside from Gonzo, my only guess:

These critics of Due Process are part of the "Judeo-Christian" cabal that judges the rest of us but dismisses their own despicable behavior by assuring us that they are not perfect but -- contrary to us heathen -- they do pray about it.

They also say they believe in heaven but they seem unwillingly to actually test their theory, appearing to be the most afraid of death of any of us.

From my observation, they appear to hate their enemies... not love them, as instructed by their spiritual leader.

(psst! They also don't ever turn the other cheek when attacked, nor do they care about the poor.)

I appreciate finding this site and learning about the call. Annoying to get political phone calls at all, let alone when everyone is asleep. I pay the phone bill and I should be able to decide if you can call me...it's like stopping my car at a light and you jump in for a ride without asking. You lost any chance of a vote at this house just by calling.

Now, now, lets not be quick to judge others either folks. We can't paint all people under the banner of Christianity with the same brush. I for one am a Christian, and while I, like most of this country wouldn't mind it that much if Osama was dead, I believe that should be after he is sentenced to death after a trial. Where that trial would be held is a good question to ask...would it be a trial in the US...would it be a trial held by the UN? And after we have him, who is gong to take his place? I have to say I agree with Thompson's first statement that we must not forget the symbolism of the man and if we take him out of the picture...terrorism doesn't just go away after that.

As to the comment that if we ask forgiveness that we are absolved of all responsibility or that we believe we're off the hook, that would be a no. We believe that we must follow the laws of the land, and if we break them, we must pay the price for our actions. The asking of forgiveness is for our souls and we aren't asking the world(although we do ask for that forgiveness from time to time)we're asking God.

Another point: do we fear death? Yes. And for good reason...if we know we haven't been living our life the way we should then we know what we will get in the end, and I can't think of anyone who would want that to be their end. Although, you may remember back to those kids at Columbine when asked if they believed in God with a gun to their head, knowing full well that if they said yes they would be killed and yet they stuck to their beliefs. One of these days, we'll all find out if that test of their faith was one that garnered them a passing grade.

One more thing, if you take a look at the satire and most other comedy that pokes fun at us Christians you might notice that we take it in stride. But if the same type of humor is directed at a Muslim organization or any other hot button issue for the liberal side of things it is considered hate speech.

And our "spiritual leader" as you would call him even got angry from time to time(for example when he was angered by the moneychangers at the temple...read a Bible, its in there). But then again, he did give his life for those same people that spat upon him, beat him, made mockery of him and nailed him to a cross. So I guess you could say that he turned the other cheek too.

And as far as not caring about the poor? Uh ...what? Most of the shelters and food pantries out there are ran by churches or other religious organizations. Or is it that you mean we don't feel that we should support those who will not support themselves? As the old saying goes: you give a man a fish..he eats for a day...you teach a man to fish...well you get the picture.

I'll go ahead and step down off my soapbox now...
