What in the World? Thompson are you still on Schiavo? Aren't there more pressing and up-to-date concerns like, oh I don't know, the IRAQ WAR! She was in a brain-dead vegetative state for 15 years.

Look, I work in a cancer clinic and volunteer for hospice. There is nothing wrong with dying with dignity, it is a good thing. (I digress, our soldiers in Iraq deserve the same respect and an achievable mission--fight al-Qaeda and train Iraqis for a de-centralized government). Terry Schiavo was finally offered a dignified death; she was not murdered by assisted suicide or euthanasia, but her feeding tube was simply removed and pain managed. Modern medical practices have the ability to keep people's bodies alive for a long, long time--even after brain death. F. Thompson should be ashamed of bringing her name up to suit is campaign purposes. He should give her the dignified death that she finally got and respect her person for who she was, not as a campaign tool.

Or is there another reason this issue is so important to him . . . because that's what his campaign is: on life support and a feeding tube.

Fred Thompson is such a joke. The guy is a afraid to take a position on anything. And skipping these debates? What a coward. The same goes for Rudy, Mitt & McCain. They're skipping the GOP Values Debate next week, and now they're skipping Tavis' debate, because they all know they're weak on values and minority issues, and they're afraid of Mike Huckabee, who keeps rising in the polls and destroying them in the debates.

Robert. MOVEON is a PAC. Not a charity or a educational,religious or medical non-profit service. As a PAC,the Times should have hit them for the full amount. Even in the lack of this, should the Times parse words,as they are good at doing,lets see what they charge a conservtaive PAC the next time around.You also forget that the Times must charge even more for date-specific ad insertion which there is no evidence they did so in the case of MOVEON,which deliberately timed this ad for the appearence of Petraeus before Congress.

I think Thompson's answer to the question about Terri Shiavo is one of the most revealing of any statements coming from candidates of either party. This news story occurred about two years ago. His answer reveals a startling admission--he doesn't remember it. How many of you have forgotten the basic details of this story? Do you really want a president who has a short term memory problem? I wonder if he even remembers from day to day that he is a candidate for president. No wonder his launch is such a dud.

Rufus:Indeed I am,if they wish to staunch the flow deriving from their ongoing circulation losses. The Times was caught in lies and now they are circling the wagons which included todays lame explainer by The Pinch And Bill Show in its editorial which did not bother to mention [www.spectator.org],that MOVEON approached a NY Times reporter less than one week before the ad ran in order to get it raced past others in line and get it printed at the time of the Petraeus hearings. Thus,the Times violated three main rules of print advertising. It refused to allow ads from conservatives[thus burnishing the accurate perception that the paper is run by a pack of neophyte Leninists],it moved MOVEON to the front of the line in its ad-appointments,and it made a discount to a political PAC,who is under quite differant non-profit rules[see:FEC at www.fec.gov for more on that] than a charity or a religious/humanitarian/educational non-profit.

The issue is not whether Tavis Smiley represents all communities of color. The issue is that the current Republican "front runners" have declined to participate in a forum focused on the issues of the African American community. This forum is hosted by PBS and has been scheduled for months. The date of the Republican debate was announced at the time of the PBS Democratic debate in June. In all that time they could not adjust their schedules? Furthermore, all the Republicans except one (I believe it was McCain) refused the Univision debate. While traditional media has not focused on this story I think it speaks volumes about who the Republican party is and what the "front runners" represent. At a time in our country when our criminal system reminds us that justice is not blind and individuals are kidnapping and torturing people of color I believe anyone wanting to lead us is required to have something to say to its citizens about how they will make things better; especially those of us that are marginalized.
