They just can't be newly manufactured and the owner undergoes a background check and pays an extra tax. I saw on TV where a person (obviously rich) just bought (and fired) a 90mm anti-tank gun designed to take out Tiger tanks in WWII! I nearly bought a fully automatic mini-14 but changed my mind because of the $14,000 price tag. In the same store, they were selling a 50 cal machine gun (M2) for about $60,000. The very fact that you didn't have a clue about this should be a hint to you that your fears are groundless! I am NOT anti-gun. I feel everyone SHOULD have the right to own one. I do NOT fee ANYONE needs assault rifles except the police and military. Anyone who needs an assault rifle to hunt must be a really bad shot if they need to fire multiple high powered rounds to hit what they're aiming at. Those weapons are designed to do ONE THING! KILL PEOPLE and INFLICT AS MUCH DAMAGE AS POSSIBLE!! Same for hollow point and high powered ammo. It should NOT be legal. It is no good for personal protection. You can't tell me that someone is going to fire hollow points at an intruder in their house. Even if they hit their target...the bullet is likely to go through the intruder and through a wall and hit a family member...and THEY KNOW THAT!! A revolver or semi-automatic handgun with standard ammo is all that's needed for personal protection. ALONG WITH THE KNOW HOW TO SAFELY USE THEM! The NRAs stand against owner registration for ALL weapons is a cowards stand. Afraid the govt. will know who owns what weapons and how many? What are these people afraid of? Perhaps that their stolen guns might be used in a crime and linked back to them...possibly resulting in a lawsuit? If that's the case ...THE WEAPON SHOULD HAVE BEEN SECURED BETTER! Same for pawn shops and gun shops. Weapons should be taken apart for display and working parts locked up in a safe. Recently in S.Fla there have been gun shops and pawn shops broken in to and dozens of working weapons stolen. There is too much irresponsibility with owners and dealers allowing weapons to get into the hands of criminals. There are no simple answers BUT there ARE ways to REDUCE the instances of assault rifles and high powered ammo (daisy cutters, teflon bullets etc) falling into the hands of criminals. OUTLAW them for the general public and allow their manufacture for ONLY police and the military. They should be manufactured and stored in warehouses as secure as fort Knox. (I'd say as secure as a nuclear plant but we've seen on the news those aren't as secure as we'd all like to think.) The mfrs. of such weapons MUST be accountable for EACH one by serial number or have to answer WHERE IT WENT!! IF they aren't being made or sold to the public and NEWLY made (numbered) weapons are still getting into the hands of criminals then the gun mfrs are to be held responsible and govt investigations initiated. Yes, some will be imported illegally...but stronger control of imports at our ports will help there. If NRA members and supporters can SOMEHOW overcome the fear of losing their manhood if they can't have assault rifles....the safer we'll ALL be!!

Rudy wins over few NRA converts

"NRA Executive Vice President and CEO Wayne LaPierre said he liked what he heard from Giuliani. “He said a lot of things that if you’re a law-abiding American firearm owner, you’re nodding and you’re saying ‘I agree with that,’” he said."

LaPierre's quote makes it seems as if he's buying this nonsense. As a centrist Republican as well as a gun-rights activist, he suits me just fine.

Moreover, I'm certain he will be the Republican candidate for the same reason I'm certain Clinton will be the Democratic candidate. This election, the first in many years, only a centrist candidate from either major party is likely to win either the nomination or the election. Republicans who want to keep her from winning the presidency will support Giuliani.

In any case, with the all-in-one week primary elections coming up immediately after January 1, 2008, the main selection process will all be over in just another 100 days.
