For people of that age, I can't imagine favoring a government policy for lowering the drinking age. During vietnam, the drinking age was lowered in the last days of the draft only to be raised again later. There are programs that the government could sponsor that would provide far better opportunities to 16 to 18 year-olds than legalization of drinking.

Likewise, if you're old enough to be trusted to drive a half ton vehicle, you should be trusted to pick your own representative. Kids drink anyway, I know I did. Nobody died. I do know lots of 45 year olds who drink and drive though. It's not the age, it's the choices the people make. I personally think that 16 year olds should be able to vote. The elections are talked about constantly in school and therefore they are probably more informed than 80% of American voters.

Also it get's them registered in HS which is a big step to getting the entire eligible electorate to vote. I don't have any figures but we know that people in their 20's don't vote(Myself excluded) and maybe if they notice that voter registration card that's been sitting in their wallet since HS they'll get out.

asking that the drinking age be dropped to 18 because people can join the armed services at 18 is about as ridiculous a question as I can possibly imagine. No, the drinking age should not be lowered. I do however, believe the age for the military should be changed to 21. Remember, eighteen is still a teenager, yes their reflects are stronger and quicker but, has that saved nearly 4,000 from IED's. At the age of 18, teenagers are still growing in mind and body and a quick decision for the military today could cut your life span by 60 years as proven in this invasion of Iraq. I truly have the respect for our military, but old men always send young men to die. I am a military Mother.

We treat young people (18 -21)like children and then are suprised when they act like children? If one can marry, sign contracts, drive, and go to war, at 18 (or younger) why should they have to be 21 to drink legally. They are already drinking illegally at 18. Oh, and if we raised the drinking age to 30 would we have less drunk driving accidents or just more people drinking illegally? 18 should be the age a legal age of adulthood with all the priveledges and responsibilities.

If an 18 year old kid can fight and die for his country, then he or she ought to at least be able to have a beer or a glass of wine with dinner....don't you think?
As far as lowering the voting age....well, teenagers are held to the law just like the rest of us are, and they subjected to sales and "use" taxes just like everyone else. You know what they say..."taxation without representation".....it's an interesting topic.

Kucinich is entirely right on this issue. The drinking age should be 18. The voting age should be 16. Both are top issues for the National Youth Rights Association. It isn't as crazy as people might think. J. Merle Stanley hit the nail on the head.

Actually, techincally--if you care to split hairs, and often I do--there's nothing that says you can't drink at 18. You can't enter a bar, and you can't buy alcohol. And public intoxication is a crime for everyone, but they do draw the line lower if you're under 21. But if you go to someone's house and have a few beers, there is nothing illegal about it. Giving alcohol to a *minor* is a crime. Minors are those under 18. Simple as that.

BTW, I know this because I had a buddy who--at 19--was a serious drunk. He looked it up and was happy to share his knowledge with me.

You are either - responsible, or not. Responsibility is sometimes "learned". But the fact is, there ARE "young people" who (say at age 16) are far more responsible than say a 38 yr. old is, AND vise-a-versa also...
