My vote is that Romney and Thompson won. (Funny that they were also the two tallest candidates). Romney was certainly comfortable and had a good use of humor. Thompson (I didn't see the beginning) seemed to settle in. And he didn't shy away from setting himself apart from the others and getting more specific on the issues.

Sadly, John McCain is my big pick for loser. He looked so darn angry when he couldn't hear the question. It made his age stand out that much more. Plus he wasn't very confident (which Romney projected well). Finally, what's with the Bernanke (sp?) question? McCain said something like, 'I don't know much about the economy, that's why I trust those smarter than me? Sure, he did okay.' First, I agree, Ben Bernanke is doing okay, he's watching and keeping matters in check. But is that really what the USA wants in a leader, somebody who doesn't know or have any intuition on what's best for the economy? I keep being driven further from McCain, which is sad because 7 years ago, he was my favorite.

Now I like the Huck and Romney for the republicans.

*Finally, that was a fascinating debate. It was really one of the more interesting ones to watch. I think the democrats would be wise to stop counting their chickens before they are hatched. Because their issue the war, which isn't going so well for them. Well, the republicans are probably going to start changing there mind during the general and with the senate elections. Force a compromise, and wind up looking like the good guys. I can see it now . . . "We have tried in Iraq, but they just don't want to reconcile. It is no longer worth the lives of our soldiers." Of course, they will do it in the most hawkish way. And I don't respect a politian's swinging with the election winds. Ron Paul may still be able to support a candidate yet.

All of the Republican candidates played their "fiscal conservative" card, each vying to cut taxes and more government programs and spending than the next guy. But no one word about the cost of the Bush war in Iraq. It's as if the billions spent on unending wars don't count as "spending". Where is the money coming from if not from taxes already in place? And if those taxes are cut as each one of the Republicans promises, how are their wars to be financed? Do they plan on keeping war spending "off budget" as Bush has done, or will they realize that they can't have their wars without paying for them ? It seems the Republicans can always find money for their wars, the military industrial complex, no-bid-contracts with likes of Haliburton and Blackwater, but are determined to cut as many domestic programs as possible so that they can wear the mantra of "conservative". Supporting Bush's veto of children's healthcare while supporting his demand for another $190 BILLION for his war in Iraq is a prime example of this crowd's priorities.

I won't be voting for any of these candidates, but I find it interesting how a career politico like Thompson is seen as an outsider. Yes, he's an actor now, but the majority of his adult life has been spent in government, including lobbying. Also, I wonder when the CEO-for-President model will be recognized as wholly inappropriate? The United States government is not a corporation, and should be run on entirely separate, often divergent, principles. I guess the bar for "presidential" has been set pretty low, but right now I don't see either party offering a candidate worth supporting.

I am glad to see all the positive references to thompson, my favorite candidate. Yes, he did look a bit tired in the beginning, but perked up quickly. He was the only one who did not seem to be in the pocket of the trade unions. One of them even said that trade unions are gaining in strength, when they have the biggest loss of membership in their history. Gotta go back and see who that was.
I prefer Fred Thompson, he is experienced, has been "around the block" and won't accept any nonsense from foreign leaders. As an American who worked in the middleast for 12 years, I can tell you that anyone who claims they know or understand the Arab mind is either a lier or the messiah! Ron Paul is the best choice. He gets shoved to the back a lot. If it seems like he is coming out of left field on some of his points of view, particularly economics, it is because he has a very good grasp of just how broken this country is. For some not paying attention, it didnt get broken in 7 years. Ron Paul is first and formost a real fiscal conservative, and may be one of the few that has not only read the Constitution, but believes in it and protects it. Check his voting record. He is that voice in the wilderness in Congress. That he cant give up quick little tidy solutions is not because he doesnt understand the issues. As for the debate...Sure Thompson did OK but coming in late seems kind of playing it safe for me. Kind of like waiting to see what everyone else was answering before stating his answer just to look cool. I must have watched a different debate than the above commentator did. I thought Thompson did well and spoke as he always had but then I have seen several of his interviews which the commentaor critical of his debate has not. I watched the debate. There are things that I like about Guliani, Thompson, and McCain, but debate after debate I am more and more impressed with Romney. He may not have tons of foreign policy experience, but he looks and sounds like a president. He is by far the best republican candidate when it comes to managing things economic. He understands markets, has experience managing/balancing a large state budget, and is sharp when it comes to taxes and the economy.

I am a bit shocked by comments here. I can't believe the ignorance of some people here. I frankly didn't realize that a person's deeply held religious beliefs were a prime indicator for their qualifications for elected office. I know and work with quite a few mormons, and I find them to be excellent, hard working and family oriented people. Last time I checked Romney was a successful governor of Massachussetts...did he do anything to lead the population of that state on some evil anti-spiritual tangent?

I can't believe I'm reading Republicans actually liking Huckabee after that performance. He showed himself to be the biggest fiscal liberal on the stage. His response to Matthews's union question was plagiarized from John Edwards's "Two Americas" speech promoting class warfare. And his support for the Nancy Pelosi/Harry Reid talking points on SCHIP framed as a question by Matthews was disgusting for me to hear. I had read about his tax increases in Arkansas while he was governor, but reserved judgment not knowing about them and their context. But after this debate I know he'll be just like a Democrat on government spending and fiscal policy.

Maybe it is the longing of social issues conservatives for his message they agree with and are willing to overlook these major fiscal problems. Fact is that by being a fiscal liberal/social conservative he is a polar opposite of what 65% of what all Americans identify themselves as - fiscal conservative/social liberal.

And for Paul and Tancredo to refuse to endorse the eventual nominee of the Republican party, whoever it is, they have disqualified themselves from participating in these debates and this primary. This is the nomination process of the REPUBLICAN Party, not a single-issue party they think they have exclusive rights to. RNC leaders are well within their rights to kick them out of future debates and withdraw any Republican party resources they provide. Why aid and abet these men who will only get increased exposure and a platform to advance themselves so that in 2008 when the primary is over they can go out there and trash the Republican nominee? If they are going to do it anyway, why should the party give them the knife to do it?

It really is stupid, too. I mean, if Rudy becomes president will he legalize abortion? Oh yeah,it already is. If Rudy becomes president will he appoint judges who want to legalize gay marriage? Scalia and Olson support Rudy because they want know he wont. In fact, the judges he appoints would most likely support parental notification, waiting periods for abortion and may even rule to overturn R v W. Hillary on the other hand...will appoint more Ginsbergs who will do everything social issues Republicans abhor. I'm just having a hard time figuring out what the proximate harm is social issues Republicans would feel under a Rudy presidency. It's not like our nation becomes MORE socially liberal under him than it is today, and would most certainly become under Hillary. At worst you get a status quo under him. At best under Hillary you get a complete repudiation of every last shred of moral decency this nation has left. What is your proximate harm that would cause you to permanently and irrevocably harm your country and your children because you only get someone who delivers 70% of what you want? Selfish bastards!

Personally, I can't be passionate about any candidate on either side. The front runners for both parties aren't my taste. Hillary scares me and Giuliani is too liberal on social issues for me. Romney is one dashing man, but he shouldn't get your vote because of that either. Thompson is also not politically inexperienced. Politically lazy perhaps though. Ron Paul would not run better as a democrat, just because his stance was against the Iraq war doesn't make him a better Democratic candidate. He's still very conservative on a number of issues, especially government programs and the economy. He and Mike Gravel are the long shot old coots who don't stand a chance. Kucinich doesn't either, but he's not a coot quite yet.

If anyone knows of an anti abortion, pro gay rights, pro illegal immigrant amnesty, anti extreme troop timetable, mostly fiscally conservative, pro universal health care, somewhat anti affirmative action and welfare (they need reformed), and anti extreme gun control candidate, please tell me. As a Democrat, albeit a moderate one, I was happy to see Mr. Thompson not completely blow it. I would love for him to be the candidate. He is lazy, dishonest (go check out his activities during Watergate - he actually took confidential information about the wiretaps to the White House) and he is dumb as a rock. Nixon actually referred to him as "that dumbs**t", even as he was tipping them off. I could handle a moderate, intelligent Republican president, especially since I am not wild about the Democratic frontrunners, but two stupid ones in a row might put our country down for the count. I truly feel sorry for genuine, thinking conservatives who have had to endure the moron in the White House. It sets intelligent politcal discourse, a lost art to begin with, back that much further.

And I must say, I love the non sequitur attacks on Ron Paul. It shows me that his message is getting legs and many that support business as usual in DC fear what Dr. Paul might bring to the Executive branch. I can certainly understand why people disagree with Dr Paul’s convictions. What I don’t understand is why the rest of the GOP feels the need to bash him and his followers at every turn. It isn’t the Libertarian wing of the party that got us into all our current messes and debts. It seems to me that many in the GOP would rather we continue with the massive debt and deficits just so long as nobody rocks the boat to much. Of course they then talk out of the other side of their mouth about how America is going down the tubes.

Ron Paul will not win anything this election, but he is pushing Liberty back onto the Conservative side of things where it belongs.

Romney is NOT forthright with voters as he courts the votes of Bible-believers and Christians. Although LDS have assumed many names/words/phrases of the Bible/Judaism/Christianity, and although their living prophet says they are christians since "Christ" is in name of their religion--that's like saying all males name "Christian" are Christians--they are Not Christians unless they are born again of the Spirit of the Only Living God, through faith in His Living Word, the Messiah-the Christ of the Bible--then they can not be Christian. Christ says many shall say in that day, Lord,Lord, but he shall tell them, depart from me, I never knew you. That word "knew" means the intimate oneness relationship Christ indwells every born again believer in Him.

Christ of the Bible warned, in the LATTER DAYS there would come many falsechrists leading many astray--false prophets, false apostles, false teachers, false doctrines. He said BeNot--Do Not Be--deceived.

GOD says, Be not deceived, GOD is not mocked, for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. I cannot help but wonder and watch as Romney dances around his deception.

LDS scripture in "Ensign," Nov, 2000, p.7, reminds them, "All Latter-day Saints enter the new and everlasting covenant when they enter this Church. This, alone, places Romney in direct opposition to being President of the United States.

It is none of LDS members' business if their LDS leaders are right or wrong, if leaders tell them to do a thing, they are to do as they are told (e.g. vol.6, p.32).

A former teacher at Brigham Young University stated that it's no secret LDS-Mormons intend to TAKE OVER THE WORLD, it's in all their writings. And LDS plan to save the Constitution of the U.S. by establishing a THEOCRACY ("Saints Among Us," Rocky Mountain Magazine, Jan./Feb. 1980, pp.17-32).

Hmmmm. No wonder they pout: "Keep religion out of it!"

As far as war in Iran: If it ever came to that, there is absolutely NO NEED for "boots on the ground". Let them rebuild their own country.
As far as people dissing Mormonism for their theological beliefs, perhaps they should understand that Mormons follow God's revealed truth and if that's a problem, take it up with God.
As far as the middle-east mindset, remember that Jews have an equal, perhaps even superior, claim to what they consider "their land", which predates World War 2 by millennia. Reconciliation is not possible until the Arabs drop the policy of genocide.
As far as voting for a Democrat, it's true that a sharp left turn on taxes and entitlements will not help the economy, burdened as it is with a government that takes a bigger portion of hard earned dollars than it should. Remember, anytime the government gets involved, it creates a surplus in one sector of the economy and a shortage in another, which benefits nobody. Less government generally equals a more responsive economy.
As far as the line-item veto, it is necessary since so many bills have non-essential, even contradictory and known veto items, so much legislation that's passed ends up being a very mixed bag. I doubt the founding fathers ever anticipated such devious tactics, but if it takes an adjustment to the Constitution to allow a line item veto, so be it. We should look outside the box on that one.
As far as Romney's statement where he'd consult attorneys regarding going to war, I believe that's a reflection of his reliance on rule of law in determining action which is not a bad idea at all.
And while Matthews isn't my ideal for a moderator, consider that the Democratic candidates have not been vetted so far in this election, yet the Republican candidates certainly have. The Democratic candidates will not be ready for the withering fire that will confront them in the general election. Hiding from challenging situations only tends to weaken them and does the electorate no favors.

Fred Thompson started too late. John McCain's chance came and went in 2000. Mitt Romney has too much explaining to do (flip-flops, religious values, and his limited grasp of Presidential authority). Rudy Guiliani's agressive, in your face style may be fine for New York City, but not for the nation (he will go to excess and implode prior to 11/08, if not before New Hampshire). If this had been a real debate, Romney would have dominated Giuliani. If you actually paid attention to the exchange between the two on the line-item veto and not just Rudy talking about being Mayor of New York, you would have heard Romney mention that the line-item veto in the way that it had been formatted was ruled unconstitutional - not the actual line-item veto. Also, as the Mayor pointed out himself as well as Romney, taking the line-item veto to the Supreme court was not about being a strict-constructionist as Rudy thinks himself to be, but it was about securing more funds for spending on his constituency.

In a real debate you also have to cite sources from time to time. Romney did just that when he rebutted the phony numbers on spending put forth by Giuliani who still continued to use those numbers even post-debate. Saying that Giuliani won this exchange is an insult to intelligence and logic everywhere.

By the way, who else was excited about halfway through the debate when it still seemed possible that Rudy would get through an entire event without mentioning 9/11?

Get over yourselves. I'm a mixed breed - Baptist mother, Jewish father. If Jews were as into converting non-believers to Judaism to save them from their mistaken ungodliness as it is taught, they could accuse every single Christian of worshiping false idols in worshiping a man and the icons of a man as a god. I mean, every religion that breaks covenant with the Torah is an abomination. Messiah, whatever, just because a bunch of power-hungry Roman/Spanish Catholics decided to force hundreds of millions of non-Christians to convert or die and their descendants number in the billions now doesn't make Christ as God legitimate or right.

So, you religious nutcases who have no perspective or appreciation towards other religions can take your intolerance and shove it somewhere the sun don't shine. Whatever Romney chooses to believe, or whatever anyone chooses to believe is their own decision, and you have no right to stand in judgment of another.
