I don't see how Paul plainly stating "NO!" can be considered "waffling".

The only ambiguity to his statement is that he indicated a willingness to support a nominee who shared his foreign policy agenda. Well, there aren't any and aren't going to be any. That makes his "NO!" pretty definitive.

And I'd like to know who the people are that think that Giuliani is the best candidate to defeat Clinton. He had a chance to defeat Clinton once before, and got a doctor's note to let him run away screaming into the night. He was losing the day he withdrew and probably would have gotten slaughtered in the end.

How is it "waffling" for Ron Paul to state that he wouldn't support the GOP candidate unless that candidate changed his foreign policy positions and stopped engaging in illegal wars against Middle Eastern countries? Did Paul previously state his plan to endorse whoever the Republican candidate for President would be- no matter his positions? No, he has not.

"Waffling" usually means to switch one's position on a particular issue- often dramatically- for purposes of political expediency or theater. Say what you will about Ron Paul- he certainly has his share of idiosyncratic views - but accuse him of "waffling" on issues at risk to your own credibility as a commentator.

For a proper illustration of "waffling"- consider Giuliani's vacillations on abortion during the first debate- during which he stated that he'd be okay with the Supreme Court overturning Roe Vs. Wade, then stated he supported a Women's Right to Abortion... Or consider Romney's positions on abortion, immigration, gay marriage, presidential pardons, and several other issues.

I watched the debate primarily to get a look at Fred Thompson, to see what he's about. Well, he ain't about much...I found myself being embarrassed for him. He kept looking down at his notes ("let's see, what did they tell me to say?") He's just "out of it" in general. Astounding to me that anyone takes him seriously. The only Democrats who will suffer for the Michigan and Florida debacles (aside from Clinton's primary strategy) are the State Legislatures in those two states that allowed their votes to become irrelevant. The contention that it will hurt Democrats in a general election is a pipe dream.

Ron Paul comes out of the debate the biggest winner for decking Romney on what firstread correctly spots as the biggest gaffe of the debate. Presidents do seek counsel in that scenario, but not their own PERSONAL lawyer, as Romney's ridiculous remark seemed to imply.

I'm not a Paul supporter, but I honestly don't understand why any Republican who really believes in small government and cutting spending would vote for anybody besides Ron Paul. All of you who complain about Bush's spending and bloated government are just blindly repeating the same mistake if you support Giuliani, Romney, McCain, or Thompson, because the Washington Republicans who run those campaigns only use "small government" and "fiscal restraint" as a way to get folks to vote for them; anyone who still falls for it is a blooming idiot at this point.

On the MSNBC webpage there is a 'rate the candidates' for the Republicans. Looking at the ratings before the second debate and after I notice one thing immeadiately. Ron Paul is the only one with a positive rating. THE ONLY ONE, before or after the debate that rates a positive. And that rating jumps through the roof after the second debate to 66% positive with almost 9000 votes.

Romney is such a good "family man" the day his wife publicly mentioned they would not be returning to Massachusetts from Utah, for Mitt to run for governor, because of her health, Romney butts in, and the next day announces their move to Massachusetts for campaigning for governor.

People LEFT Massachusetts, "his" state, like it was the plague while Romney was governor! Median home price rose 95%!!! For Crying Out LOUD! It was 40% for the Nation! "His" state was the ONLY state that FAILED to post ANY GAIN in EMPLOYEED RESIDENTS!! Maybe that's EASY for MEDIA to forget, being blindsided as they are!

Maybe his legal advisors will teach him it is not a good idea, if he wants to be leader of the free world, to still be wearing underwear that are to protect him from attacks from the devil! why wasn't hillary clinton at the debate since her plan to replace social security with private stock market accounts parallels the republican plans.

hillary thinks everyone should play the stock market, even the poor need to send their money to wall street to have it siphoned off by the wealthy elite, then the market can have one of those unforeseen downturns leaving the rich with the money and the poor investor with nothing, according to people like hillary that is how the natural order of things should be, the poor don't know what to do with money anyway

with the so called privatization plan the government can continue to spend the money that is supposed to be for social security on their pork projects all at the expense of the wage earner, remember the wealthy are not required to pay into social security above a set limit, the wage earner is towing the whole load on this deal, the wage earner gets taxed at 40% with no way to shield or hide income like the wealthy

I'm thrilled to see Fred Thompson in these debates. He was so unimpressive all the "I'm with Fred" folks that never really heard him talk but didn't like the other candidates are probably wondering what to do now. Maybe they hope he'll do something scandalous so they can get out easy from supporting him. His candidacy makes it so much better for Ron Paul. (By the way, "I'm with Fred" folks, you're welcome to join the rEVOLution.) I, too, agree with a previous poster wondering when the top tier candidates will ask the field to be reduced, although I'm not sure John McCain will appreciate being bumped in favor of Ron "$5 Mil in the Bank" Paul who will school Giuliani and Romney when people start paying attention which will probably be about a week before Iowa.

Did anyone notice how every candidate has taken one of Ron Paul's positions as his own for debates now? Why not just vote for Ron Paul, he holds all those positions and held them before they were popular ways to win an election. Solid? Yup.

To see real leaders at a real debate is refreshing. The Republicans are light years ahead of the Democrats in holding debates that matter. Democrats have all the dog and pony shows, and photo ops. Republicans get down to the business of discussing the issues and problems the country faces todays. It is also great to see the Republicans holding a debate with a host and questioners that have been nothing but hostile towards the Republicans. If you can't hold up to questioning by adversaries in the media, how are you going to hold up to it when you are President?

This post examines the allegation that Sen. Hillary Clinton ☼ is a "Corporate Democrat" - namely, a person who is beholden to "Corporate America" and who is more likely to support "corporate interests" as President than the interests of average or middle-class Americans.

I find that the existing evidence, based on her Senatorial voting records compiled by Progressive Punch, Americans for Democratic Action, AFL-CIO and SEIU, does not really support this allegation. Indeed, the evidence suggests that Sen. Clinton's voting patterns are substantially and surprisingly progressive (ranging typically from 90-100%), including on corporate or labor issues. There are certainly serious issues where Sen. Clinton has unfortunately taken anti-progressive positions (e.g., her vote for a version of the Bankruptcy Bill in 2001), but the data reviewed here suggests that overall, she is far more progressive than corporatist. In the absence of additional or new data, I have to conclude that the label "Corporate Democrat", as applied to her, is inappropriate and extraordinarily misleading. In other words, while it is true that she has strong links to corporate America and corporatist interests, there is little or no evidence that she systematically votes in lock-step with those interests or even significantly in line with their positions. I provide a few plausible explanations for this dichotomy in the conclusions of this post.

Dr. Paul was given the least amount of air time out of all the canidates. For every one question that was asked of Ron Paul, canidates such as Giuliani, Romney, and stuttering Thompson were all asked four or five. How can the media, which is supposed to have an unbiased atitude towards all candidates even if they have different, "unrepublican" ideas, give a man who stands firmly with his befiefs of less government intervention so little air time to defend his positions? Ron Paul is a constitutionalist, which is something out country has forgotten about. He believes in the principals that this country was founded on. Other canidates such as Huckabee and McCain, used there catch phrases and jokes to try and win over the public. Ron Paul has written BOOKS on economics and government spending. Why not ask the person who has the most experience with the issue what he would do? It is because of coverage like this, that the average american will simply shrug Ron Paul and his ideas out the window. It is time to give him a fair chance by recognizing that as long as we let the media choose our canidates for us, no matter what medium that might be on, the average american will not have a chance to decide for themselves. It's not just an internet thing. Ron Paul has a realistic plan to bring this country back to its former glory and reduce our needless oversees spending. Please fight to give him equal air time. Rick - Perhaps you shouldn't speak for a group of which you are not a member. People support Hillary for a variety of reasons that have nothing to do with Bill.

I'm the first to admit that I think one of the best things about Hillary is that she was First Lady, and she will have a former president at her disposal to advise her pretty much all the time. I also think she is intelligent, articulate and, quite frankly, she knows how to succeed in politics. And like it or not, Washington is all politics. We may wish that it was not so, but that's the reality. I'd rather have someone capable of dealing with that reality than someone full of idealism that will not be fulfilled.

Joe Bob, TX: You imply that Ron Paul sounds progressive. Could you explain what you mean by that? Is it because he sometimes sounds like a lib/Dem on the war or tweaks the Republicans?

Aside from his war stance; his positions on protectionism, the gold standard, rescinding trade agreements, cutting taxes, shrinking government, judicial activism, opposition to public funding of embryonic stem cell research on the grounds that it is immoral to force taxpayers to fund it, opposition to gay marriage, his strong pro-life position and even his defense of Christmas all sound conservative, if not reactionary, relative to todays liberal/progressive political paradigm.

The reason he is a Republican is because he obviously doesn't fit in the Democrat party (even his reasons for opposing the war fundamentally differ)and his chances of winning any office by running as a Libertarian would be slim and none.

Democrats "like" him because he is stirring up the Republican pot in the forums but they could never really vote for him, except in the MSNBC "poll".

The possibility of being a Republican "Nader" (or even Perot)is interesting and might indeed be a negative and allow the possibility of a Hillary Clinton presidency on less than 45% of the vote, just like Bill.

Both parties have some possibility of third party activity, the Democrats because of their one issue anti-war faction. But I think in the end there will be (maybe after some interesting conventions) a traditional one-on-one between the major parties.

I'm a Democrat, but I can understand why people would vote for Ron Paul. Afterall, who doesn't want to end interventionist foreign policy and who isn't in favor of fiscal restraint.

Nevertheless, the man simply is not credible:
1) Abolishing the Fed will kill our economy. It is true that inflation has grown steadily due to the actions of the Fed, but our ENTIRE way of life depends on the availibility of money for loans. Think about that the next time you want to buy a car, a house, or a new TV...Which do you like better, your shiny new Pickup or Ron Paul?

2) A man who endorses the ANTI-VACCINATION movement does not have national interest at heart. I know that libertarians hate the idea of the Federal Government regulating health matters, but the fact is that vaccination saves lives and YOUR boneheaded choice to NOT GET VACCINATED could kill me or my family...How can a DOCTOR be against vaccination?

3) I pay more in income tax than some people make all year, but the fact is that reverting to property and excise taxes as RP supports will be a national disaster. BTW, I live in Texas where we do NOT have state income taxes and we have big fiscal problems here. Our property taxes increase every year, but poor folks suffer because they can not find funding for their local school districts. National property taxes are a bad idea...

What I am trying to articulate is that Ron Paul supports some good ideas which people resonanate with, but he also adovacates ideas that will kill our economy. That is why Ron Paul gets no coverage in the MSM.

Once again, most of the MSM is trying to belittle Ron Paul. I think Cris Mathews may get demoted for even remotely suggesting that Ron Paul's principles are good ones. Realize that if you cumulate all of the straw polls, that Ron Paul has won 13 out of 30 of them and gotten 2nd or 3rd in 10 more. They are now closing the primary in New Hampshire and setting the registration date to this Friday in order to cut off his support from the Democrats and Independents. Now that should indicate that they are afraid of him pulling more than they want him to.

Another bit of journalistic malpractice from the MSM. It was Ron Paul who took Romney to task for saying he would need to let the lawyers sort things out, not Thompson. Also, Paul did not waffle one bit when he said "No" when asked if he would support the GOP candidate. I don't know how he could be any clearer.

Most mass political movements in American history have started with only 2-3% of the population - depending on the passion of that group and current sentiment of the remaining population. The 3% quickly grows to 10%, then on to 20%, then 40% etc.

Go Ron Paul, hopefully I can count myself part of the 10% he's currently got (found out about Ron about 2 weeks ago now, thanks to the hard work of others) - and help him to the next step.

Ron Paul is being cencored. I am disgusted with NBC. I cannot believe how much they shine the light on their corporate sponsered nimrods, but make every attempt possible to avoid mentioning serious candidates like Ron Paul. Is it so hard to believe Ron Paul had over 70% in the their poll? He is the only intellegent one to choose from.

Romney exposed himself by an awkward answer re lawyers, but it won't stick. It easy to get rid of this, which by the way is more lawyer bashing than some problem with Romney's judgment or conviction. Just say "look, if your President refuses to talk to a lawyer before pursuing his objective, you're in trouble. The Constitution and the rule of law make the difference between a free society and one under despotism. I thought it was obvious my comment had nothing to do with whether to confront Iran. If the situation merits that, White House counsel, the State Department and, if necessary, the Joint Chiefs show the President how. It's a good sound bite to act like decisions are kneejerk, but in the real world good leaders act after considering what their advisers say." I like Mitt's bite on lawsuits and Giuliani, but he should just make it go away. The quote above is how, while implying immaturity about those who've attacked him over it.

Yeah does anyone else see the bias in the distribution of questions? The reason Huckabee seemed stifled was because some of the other candidates had almost double the opportunities to speak as well as the time they spoke. So yeah in a way he (as well as Paul, Tancredo, Hunter and Brownback) was kept silent, by CNBC's bias. We all know that Huckabee is well beyond 2 tier now given his standing in the Iowa polls as well as the national polls where he is only 2% points below Romney in one poll.

Gut Check - ..."Front runners banding together remove other candidates" etc. etc. ? I presume that means you support keeping Ron Paul at the debates since he's won most of them despite minimal coverage of that fact?

When will media wake up ?- Labeling somebody a front runner and then force feeding them to us just doesn't cut it anymore...
Please practice responsible coverage, hit the issues
don't marginalize honest candidates and answer this question - Why wasn't the polling after the debate
continued or discussed? Was it because the "wrong" guy (Ron Paul) was winning ?
Irresponsible, factually inaccurate and lazy journalism is no longer monopolized by Fox News, I see you offer your own brand of ahem "fair and balanced" ! I won't hold my breath on your answering my question why Debate polls aren't discussed more
but know this - Americans are catching on and it's about time! I am an Independent voter, I analyze candidates, I don't vote for who the media foists on me - I'll be voting for Ron Paul at least he's honest.
