Surveys conducted last week identified three notable swings in the race for the Democratic Presidential nomination.

First, in both the daily Presidential Tracking Poll and the weekly Rasmussen Reports numbers, Hillary Clinton reached her highest level of support thus far. In the daily numbers, Clinton reached 49% on Sunday morning and she is at 46% for the full week ending October 14. That’s up four points from the week before and two points higher than her previous peak reached in the first week of August.

Second, core opposition for all Presidential candidates has grown since summer. For much of the year, Clinton was the only candidate with core opposition approaching the 50% mark but now the rest of the field has caught up. Five of the seven leading candidates (four Republican, three Democrat) now have more than 40% of all voters committed to voting against them. The other two (McCain and Thompson) face core opposition of 39%. In addition to its impact on Election 2008, a commentary by Douglas Schoen says that the “cynicism of the American people is only hardening and deepening.”

Third, and finally, as voters tune it they are detecting more differences between the candidates. For most of the year, Democratic voters saw little ideological difference between the leading Presidential hopefuls in their own party. Now, however, 40% of Democrats see Barack Obama as politically liberal while just 29% see Hillary Clinton in that way.

In addition to these trends and their potential impact on the Democratic nomination process, data released last week showed that Clinton has opened a growing lead over Republican frontrunners Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson. Her lead has grown for several consecutive surveys. Interestingly, the data shows Clinton’s toughest general election candidate at the moment is Arizona Senator John McCain, a man who is barely hanging on to top-tier status in the race for the Republican nomination.

A week ago, Rasmussen Reports noted that Barack Obama’s weekly numbers had improved and that it might be the beginning of a turnaround. This week, however, his support is back to 23%, matching his average for September.

John Edward’s support this week has fallen to 11%, the lowest level recorded since mid-June.

Despite the buzz about Al Gore and the Nobel Peace Prize, just 13% of Americans think the former Vice President is Very Likely to enter the Presidential race in 2008.

The GOP is piling on Romney and easing off of Giuli because they believe Rudy can beat Hillary in '08 by attracting moderates and independents, who Romney doesn't appeal to. They smartly realize that Romney may not even get the majority of votes from social conservatives because he has flip-flopped on red meat issues, and because of his Mormon faith, which some don't count as being a "true Christian". Rudy, OTOH, is doing well with Catholic voters of all political persuasions, and is attracting a lot of support from the party's base because of his stands on national security. Also, Romney has propped up his standings in the race by putting a lot of his own money into his campaign. That is another indication of a lack of support from Republican donors.

Hillary has to protect herself, so its no wonder she is in the guarded mode. I saw her at a rally at my brothers college and several(10) of us were able to speak to her briefly(including myself), and she is no way cold and uncaring. She is passionate and gracious, along with being incredibly knowledgable. She is VERY likable in person. My boyfriend didn't like her until he was able to meet her and listen to her first hand. He is now considering voting for her, although his first choice is Edwards.

I agree with the earlier commenter that Ron Paul's Nevada Straw Poll win over Romney, having followed his uppercut to Romney during the debate, should be getting a LOT more press.

Some are questioning conflict of interest, as some in these groups are asked to evaluate Romney(according to NYT 03/11/07).

I don't feel superior, I feel a sense of obligation to my fellow human beings and to the morality of trying to make life better for all people not just a priviledged few. SUMMARY

This post examines the allegation that Sen. Hillary Clinton ☼ is a "Corporate Democrat" - namely, a person who is beholden to "Corporate America" and who is more likely to support "corporate interests" as President than the interests of average or middle-class Americans.

I find that the existing evidence, based on her Senatorial voting records compiled by Progressive Punch, Americans for Democratic Action, AFL-CIO and SEIU, does not really support this allegation. Indeed, the evidence suggests that Sen. Clinton's voting patterns are substantially and surprisingly progressive (ranging typically from 90-100%), including on corporate or labor issues. There are certainly serious issues where Sen. Clinton has unfortunately taken anti-progressive positions (e.g., her vote for a version of the Bankruptcy Bill in 2001), but the data reviewed here suggests that overall, she is far more progressive than corporatist. In the absence of additional or new data, I have to conclude that the label "Corporate Democrat", as applied to her, is inappropriate and extraordinarily misleading. In other words, while it is true that she has strong links to corporate America and corporatist interests, there is little or no evidence that she systematically votes in lock-step with those interests or even significantly in line with their positions. I provide a few plausible explanations for this dichotomy in the conclusions of this post.

Despite neighborhood and regional differences, and although the levels of sophistication and competency among the individual campaign events varied, our correspondents found several common themes, the most striking of which is to what degree Democrats still declare themselves undecided.

It's difficult to draw hard and fast conclusions from such anecdotal material but it might suggest that the slew of recent polls giving Hillary Clinton a commanding lead in the race for the nomination may be of limited utility. Correspondent Hova found widespread indifference toward Clinton as he went door-to-door with the Obama canvassers: "This was a fairly affluent suburb north of Los Angeles and I was really surprised not to find a single Hillary supporter in the neighborhood."
It's possible that numerous Democrats who have declared for Clinton to a pollster are like the shopper who hoists a likely candidate from the pumpkin bin inside the supermarket door. Maybe a keeper, maybe not, for there's the possibility of a better find further along in produce.

I'm a little tired of people saying that those who dislike Hillary do so only because she is a woman. The Clintons are not owned by corporations, but global corporatism does indeed trust them more than anyone running now. Another reason Gore will stay out. (and Hillary will win the whole shooting match!)
Global corporate interests will be served by a Clinton presidency and thus, ironically, by the interests of Bushco as well. None of the Republican candidates is even in the game.

Last word on global corporatism. No one who is not in bed with this mega-cartel can serve as President of the United States. If by some miracle of democratic idealism Ron Paul or Dennis Kucinich won the presidency, the wheels would come off. Disaster. The game is played on a small private field and they are not players. They have no union card. No badges. It won't happen because it can't.

The good news is that geo-corporatism is basically apolitical. They like well run companies (Bush W: NOT) and they like happy healthy consumer/producer mice. The Clintons will provide that in a true win/win for America, you, me, and our Big Brothers around the world. That, simply put, is the true American Dream of the 21st century and the Clintons are ready to deliver.

Hillary directed Hsu to donate to politicians in early and key primary states. Then most endorsed her - and began engaging state party leaders in changing the primary dates. As a radical supporter of the First Amendment, I have opposed censoring even the most provocative and distasteful materials.
I do not support anything Rush Limbaugh has ever said, and my own opinion of the man as a human being is quite low. No, he should neither be censored by the government nor the media. But anyone who listens to him for "facts" does has not earned and do not deserve the rights and privileges of American citizenship.

This vanreuter character comes blasting on this board with his biased facts as if he were the Word come down. Like Limbaugh, he cries when his judgment or intelligence is questioned, bleats and blares his acid in whatever direction he pleases. Like Limbaugh, he is wind tunnel.

Luarie from Manasquan NJ, I stuck up for you last week against Jerry but I will disagree with you today concerning Hillary. I do not want Hillary to the Democratic nominee but I will vote for her if she is. It is not because I am a mysogynist or because I can't stand the idea of a woman being president. I don't like her because I think she is the epitome of politics as usual. She may be more competent and intelligent than George Bush but I think you will see her extend the policies of the corporate interests in this country and help them extend their influence as much as any past president (sans Duhhh-bya) and extend the national polarization which exists at this time. I would vote for a woman who held similar ideas as Obama, Edwards & Paul if one existed. Fact is, I think this country is ready for and should have a woman President; just not Hillary.

Why in God's name isn't MSNBC or any of the other MSM reporting the fact that John Edwards is actually the most "electable" of the Dem candidates in a general election? They are enamored of reporting the polling data that shows Clinton ahead in the primaries, yet have totally ignored three recent & well-respected polls showing that Edwards handily beats ALL the Dem candidates, including HRC & Obama, when matched against any of the leading Republican candidates. There's a huge disconnect here, and I think it's partly because Clinton has already been coronated the nominee, and the media simply ignores any data that shows she is weaker than Edwards in the GE. And also because voters today don't want to be bothered doing their own research on the candidates' stands on the issues. They prefer the soundbites.

regarding the good news about the decrease in cancer cases in the United States

Why isn't anyone talking about the fact that the dramatic decrease in the incidences of breast cancer are directly linked to women no longer taking hormone replacement therapy? I had a double mastectomy in 2003 and though there is no way to prove that HRT was responsible for my breast cancer I know it to be true. Is this another pass for the pharmaceutical companies? And while it is true that percentages have dropped significantly for white women, African-American women and Hispanic women continue to be cut down by this disease. Come on folks, step up and tell America why we white women are living to tell the tale while our sisters of color and those without the money to gain access to health care continue to die.

Unfortunately, I think far too many women will vote for Hillary simply because she IS a woman. That is wrong. Since the MSM is owned by the Eastern Establishment they have annoited the so-called front runners from the beginning of campaign. The Rockerfeller wing has been playing the Christian Right for mules and thought they could shove the liberal front runners down their throat, but they are not buying it. The GOP has moved so far from the conservative philosophies of the Goldwater wing they really have not understanding of what a conservative truly is. Ron Paul is carrying the banner for the true Goldwater/libertarian/conservative Republicans.

As a woman, I am frankly offended by any suggestion that I would, or should, vote for Hillary Clinton BECAUSE she is a woman. Her campaign apparently believes women will vote en masse for her BECAUSE she's a woman. That is embarrassing. If women want to vote for her because they believe in her stands on the issues and her policies, fine; they should. But how many women will bother researching her policies before voting for her? Women voting for Hillary because she's a woman is just as bad as people voting for Bush because he seemed like a good ol' down-home boy. Balderdash!

I would LOVE to see a woman president in my lifetime, but this particular woman is the wrong one--at least for me personally.

You haven't said your opinions of Ms. Clinton are based on policy or party differences.
