The sick thing about this election is that Ogonowski's "good message" was pretty much a xenophobic rant, and that it worked in a district that doesn't actually have very many illegal immigrants. Of all the challenges this country faces thanks to the Bush Regime, the notion that scapegoating immigrants gets the rabble roused is truly pathetic. Maybe we deserve what we're getting from DC....

As a voter in this district I can say that this election is no proof of any shift in the political environment. Tsongas outperformed Deval Patrick percentage-wise in all but 5 cities(one of which was Ogonowski's home town where he cleaned up). This is one of the more conservative districts in MA, there was a low turnout, Ogonowski ran a good campaign, and Tsongas was not an exciting candidate. I have to laugh at the 'stick with your convictions' statement by Ogonowski. He wouldn't even say how he would vote on SCHIP, and tried to pass himself off as an independent thinker and outsider when all his positions on issues he chose to devulge were clearly conservative. Tsongas will win easily in 2008 in a general election when turnout will be big. Count on it.

It seems a little premature to frame Tsongas narrow victory as a "major shift in the national political environment". Its possible that Tsongas ran a poor campaign or that her opponent hit the right patriotic chord because he's the brother of one of the late American Airlines pilots who went down in 9/11.

There is no doubt, however, that many Democrats are disappointed with their party's timid performance at the Congressional helm since their windfall victory in 2006. They have been largely unable to pry Republican votes away from the president, in order to override his vetoes. Similarly, they have caved too often on warrantless surveillance and funding for Iraq.

Tragically, they are still behaving as though Karl Rove was calling the shots in the White House and for the RNC. Those who put them back in the majority expected bold leadership, not submission to an ideologically rigid Chief Executive.

Joe Einloth EXACTLY!, the repukes ran on anti immigration in a city with a large Cambodian population. The campaign spent a ton of money supplied by the GOP and they did mailing and phone calls to EVERYONE no matter what their party. Lowell has a struggle with Asian gangs and a flagging housing and job market. Most of the surrounding towns are blue collar with several being VERY upscale.
Ogonowski had to do the pro war thing to keep the GOP money and big party guns at his side, the lesson learned is IT IS THE WAR STUPID!

What the polls say is almost irrelevant. This guy had as much chance of beating Nikki Tsongas as Kerry did of beating Bush. This election was about the candidates. I listened to Nikki Tsongas and then Ogonowski the next night on the same local radio show. Tsongas paused briefly after what the host said, then spoke at a normal pace, at a normal pitch. Ogonowski started talking before the host finished, talked fast, and in a high nervous pitch. My father was planning to vote for Ogonowski, so I went to the radio station's (WBZ) website to play the audio for him. Sure enough, Tsongas's episode was there, but Ogonowski's was nowhere to be found. Even his own people knew that if you heard him talk you'd be less likely to vote for him.

I haven't been out of work in a job of choice - not necessity - more than a week in 35 years. My salary doubled every 5 years my first 15 working and has gone up 40% since 1998 alone. My mtg is less for a 2 bedroom house in a good neighborhood than you could rent an 1 bedroom apt in most cities. My kids attend a good public school WIHTOUT metal detectors and I've rcvd a property tax rebate for the last 4 years - All since Bloomberg was mayor - NOT RUDY - We don't get hurricanes, mudslides, floods, earthquakes, or tornados and even take the occasional terrorist attack in better stride than most of the country it didn't even affect.
Keep your TX stats Jerry. I would move there even if you didn't live there.

The exchange at the 148-nation meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency came after Iran’s chief delegate Ail Asghar Soltanieh — like Arab delegates before him — said Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert had acknowledged last year that his country possessed nuclear weapons — something Olmert says he never did.

The harsh words came after an attempt by Iran and Arab nations to submit a resolution on "Israel Nuclear Capabilities and Threat" was blocked by the EU, the United States and other Western nations.

The conference criticized Israel for refusing to put its nuclear program under international purview, with the United States alone in supporting the Jewish state.

Israel also voted against the resolution, while 53 nations backed it and 47 abstained.

Gee Jerry, I thought you were so smart. I don't work for any of the above. I'm a secretary with a 9th grade formal education. But NY has LOTS of opportunity for those who want to push themselves. I tell my kids I'm giving them the best of both worlds: They are tough, smart NYers who can compete anywhere in the world, but growing up in Queens, where they have as nice a home life as any single parent can reasonably expect to provide. Our public schools (thanks to Bloomberg) can compete w/ may cities' private ones and our City and Community Colleges are a heck of a lot better than most state ones. I tell them that even if they end up going to CCNY instead of Columbia, they will be able to live at home w/ free room & board, have an easy commute to school and when they graduate --- well, Colin Powell seems to have parlayed his CCNY degree pretty well.
NY is also - contrary to the opinion of people who have never set foot anywhere near us - full of great people with as solid family values as anywhere in the US. Just ask any of the neighbors on my block who help each shovel snow, rake leaves or watch kids afterschool. My kids don't care what color or nationality their friends are. They care that they like the same games and can help out with the same tests and homework. If being reasonable and practical and fairminded is the new definition of a liberal, then so be it.
Bet your neighbors just LOVE you Jerry, you're so fairminded and open.
