Oh my gosh! This woman was and probably still is a crazy looney toon cartoon character. I can only hope she'll be the Green Party's candidate as opposed to Ralph Nader, since she'll have a lesser spoiler impact than Nader...memories of what Nader did to the Democrats in Florida are still fresh in my mind [while I do admit it is not an absolute for-gone conclusion that but for Nader, Gore would've won all those votes and Florida and the 2000 election...but its accepted that Nader did have a negative effect.]

She got about 40 percent of the popular vote, despite the fact that she lived in Jamaica at the time with then-husband Coy Grandison (with whom she had a son, Coy McKinney, now age 20). In 1988, McKinney ran for the same seat and won, making the McKinneys the first father and daughter to simultaneously serve in the Georgia state house.

On August 27th at a peace rally in Kennebunkport, Maine McKinney confirmed the depth of her disenchantment with the Democratic Party taking the bold step of urging San Francisco voters to replace Nancy Pelosi, with anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan.

Instead of posting hate messages based on a superficial read of a brief, superficial story on what is basically a superficial news site, why not actually ask someone in the Green Party of California who supports McKinney WHY there is so much support for her within the Green Party? As for Nader and Florida, my questions are: (1) Why not blame David McReynolds, Monica Moorehead, or any of the other left wing 3rd party candidates who were on the Florida ballot in 2000 and got more votes than the difference between Bush and Gore? Why doesn't anyone who thinks he or she knows all there is to know about politics ever say "Monica Moorehead cost us the election?" (2) Why doesn't anyone in the Democratic Party ever bother to seek out Green Party supporters in Florida and ask them why they voted the way they did? No one held a gun to anybody's head and demanded that he or she vote for Nader, who earned whatever votes he got the hard way, and deserved many more than he got. (3) Why doesn't anyone ever blame the between 100,000 and 200,000 REGISTERED DEMOCRATS in Florida who, according to exit polls, voted for George Bush in 2000? FAR more Democrats in Florida voted for Bush than for Nader. (4) When are Democrats going to help change the system by supporting creative efforts such as Instant Runoff Voting instead of whining about people who want to exercise their rights within a system that is so clearly in NEED of change?

Greens are not Democrats and are not sympathetic to Democratic Party whining. Instead of being baffled that that is the case, I suggest you follow the old adage and first seek to understand, THEN seek to be understood.

As mentioned by other commentators, I don't think McKinney's downfall had anything to do with being an outspoken African American woman. Here in Houston, I have the privelege to be represented by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee. She is one of the most independent and outspoken women that I have ever heard speak, but she does so in a respectful and reasoned manner that is appropriate for her position as a U.S. representative.

As for the Green Party: I firmly believe that one should always vote for the candidate that they feel will do the best job, regardless of whether or not that person is "electable". However, even if she might do better than the joke that we currently have in the Whitehouse, I find it hard to believe that anyone would think McKinney has the qualifications or the temperament to be the President of the United States.

Having lived in the Atlanta area while she "served"
in Congress, I felt a type of personal shame that she "represented" us.
I know that in the history of Congress there have been many "duds", but she certainly should be in the top of the list when picking worthless representatives. The origianl thoughts she did have
(few and far in between)were often so out-there that I often questioned her sanity. The truly sad thing is that this pathetic woman is still able to generate media coverage...go figure!

I've lived under madam mckinney's rule here in Atlanta. I would not wish her upon anyone in this country. Thank goodness I moved out of her district.

I agree with whomever "Keith" is on principle and I give her credit for her outspoken position against Bush long before anyone else. But her boldness does not validate her competancy. Unfortunately it's true..we should've taken that in consideration in 2000 as well. My issue is that these third parties fail to make serious efforts to recruit good representatives so the public at large begin to take them seriously (Ron Paul is a start..problem is he is GOP isntead of libertarian)...not just naysayers and grandstanders. Most of the studies that were done, be it by the Miami Herald, USA Today or National Opinion Research Center, concluded that under the most liberal standards for vote-counting, Gore would have won. This means dimpled chads and chads detached only at one corner. The more stringent the standards, the worse he would do in a recount.

Without the progressive left, there is no correction for what ails this country. Those of you who expect that the Greens expect to win are not considering their actual goals.

All the Greens need is 5 per cent of the vote to affect a significant change for their party. 5 percent gives them guaranteed access on the 2012 ballot and federal matching funds. For a party that takes NO corporate funding and is completely grassroots, this success is monumental.

This party is looking at the future. Young, yes, but not stupid.

East Coast people bristle easily over the West Coast. However, we are part of the United States. We only receive back 75 per cent of the federal taxes we pay. We produce most of the varietal foods for our nation and are the richest economic state in the country. In the meantime, we can't fund our schools, our water resources are dwindling, our forests are stripped. Who is going to help us? It's not the present crop of Dems and certainly not the Repubs and though Greens and Libertarians share some significant issues, the Libertarians are not renowned for being helpful with our issues.

It's about ballot access, campaign financing (the Greens take no corporate funding) and local determination. a Contested primary is exciting for a young party and will get some of those 50 per cent of people who don't bother to vote out to the ballot booth.

I never met her, but I do know about the Capitol Police slap. I also read here that she left Congress and came back. I was not aware. I thought she was elected, stay a couple of terms and was voted out and has not returned as of this date. Does anybody know about her leaving Congress and coming back. I checked her web site and cannot find anything to support that post.

I also read here that people ask others not to attack her, but then they attack other elected officals in the same post. Why do you think you can have it both ways? OK, this is America!

I would not vote for her for President. And it has nothing to do with her skin color, her age, her gender, stance on the war, etc., etc., but everything to do with I do not think she has the skills or the temperament to be President And as an American, I can have those views and thoughts. I am not asking anybody to agree with me or my thoughts, but do ask you respect that I can have them. Rest assured, I may not agree with you, but would never attack you personally for your thoughts.

If you wanted to discuss with me your and my thoughts, I would welcome it. We may agree to disagreee, but the name calling really needs to stop. If you disagree with Ms. McKinney or President Bush or anybody else for that matter, then state the facts why you do. The personal name calling really serves no purpose other than to excite the opposite side

Lastly, I enjoyed reading all of the post, but I wish people would get their facts at least correct. Please do some research before posting "facts" that are incorrect. An opinion is your thoughts, facts are supported by an occurrence that has been verifed by that occurrence.

Cynthia McKinney took Rumsfeld into a Congressional Hearing for questioning about Iraq. This had not been the Democratic Party's way. The website Palmetto Scoop has blasted the Greens for bringing her to South Carolina, and has called Bryan Smith, a candidate for Town Council in this small town, a "nut case" for working with McKinney.
