I have never been a supporter of Brownback and think his campaign was built upon a faulty foundation of merely being a "me too" candidate. His views did not distinguish him from the others and so there seemed to be no real reason for him to be running.

That said, I have always been impressed by candor. I wish him well and applaud his early awakening to the fact that his campaign is entirely extraneous. It's especially honorable for him to drop out before the debate rather than take part if he knows he can't sustain a continued campaign.

Brownback's withdrawl signals the beginning of the atrition portion of the primary campaign. I wouldn't be surprised to see Tancredo go next. As for the candidates who drop out giving the nod to Congressman Paul, I don't see that as a realistic scenario. Paul's stance on the war is the polar opposite of every one of his opponents. For them to give support to Paul would undermine a position they have so vehemently supported throughout the race.

I believe Congressman Paul can do just fine on his own. The debate should be interesting this weekend!

As we consider who the best candidate is for us, a very personal choice during the primaries, perhaps this will help. My father sent me this web site which asks a few questions about what your priorities are and then ranks the candidates based on your answers. I am sure people can poke holes in the process but I found it encouraging to find my assumptions of which candidate matched my beliefs being proven by this process. My father found out his choice was not the same as the web result, but rather is now looking closely at a different candidate.

Both of us have moved from a tier 1 candidate to tier 2 so we may not win unless MANY more people discover this for themselves. Give it a try.

If it's the media then why is Giuliani ahead in the GOP polls? I think FOX and Zogby polls will put Brownback in the same place. If you're blaming the mainstream media for Brownback's demise then you've been watching too much mainstream media and not enough of the radio talk shows. Pat Robertson supports Giuliani, and that speaks volumes since he stated that the 911 attacks were the cause of moral decay six years ago. Evidently Robertson doesn't think that anymore, now it's actually about terrorism and security. Hypocrites be exposed!

I admire the few that won't flip flop on Giuliani and stand their ground. We'll see if Brownback puts his integrity where his mouth is and support Huckabee who is the only true voice of social conservatism in this race. The fact that evangelicals aren't supporting Brownback or Huckabee by considering a possible third party candidate is strange to me. Maybe Brownback is that third party?

At any rate evangelicals are in a real pickle because many (not all)believe that not voting is a sin, which is spawned by an extra-creative implication based on an inference that is subjectively translated by those who want to guilt trip people into voting. If it's Giuliani and Hillary with no third party I guess the evangelical powers will have to sort out the Biblical mess they never thought would occur.

Agreed with Rob, I hope Brownback is correct and the GOP gives the nomination to someone other then Giuliani. As for Huckabee, let's not forget he said he would go into war with Iran, without the apporval of Congress... and he has strong amnesty stance for illegals.. He is pushing the same Bush agenda. As far as I'm concerned the only viable candidate that the republicans have is Ron Paul, and no not all of his supporters are into conspiracies.. I'm looking into the guy myself.. gotta say I'm impressed

He later claimed that he spend just as much time as workers on ground zero, and didn't offer any kind of sympathy for the fact that they are suffering from illnesses, It was later found that he only spend 29 hours on ground zero, less then the time he spend at Yankee Stadium..

Then he was warned in 1993, after the first world trade center attacks to move the security office from the seventh floor out of the building in case of an emergency.. of course he didn't listen and look at the results..

As for Brownbeck, Republicans apparently only care about a baby that is in the womb. The second it hits the air, it's expected to stand on it's own 2 feet and not dare demand the gov't who might have forced its birth deal with any problems it might have in its life.

As for Rudy, people should remember that the last for the last six years since he's been OUT OF OFFICE here, the city and its services have improved considerably. As far as his tax cuts claims: I recvd $400 rebate on my property taxes every year for the last five years - and not one red cent before that.
People should also remember that this is the man who wanted to change the city and state constitution so he could stay in office AFTER his term had expired, because no one but him could be trusted to turn the city around after 9/11. Besides the fact that this has patentably turned out not to be the case, is this REALLY the type of man we want in the White House? Someone who wants MORE power than already allowed by law?

The Republican Party should embrace the federalism it says it stands for on the abortion issue. That is, the matter should be left to the states, which is what the Constitution (see 10th amendment) clearly says. Party members can then differ on the local level over the issue (I happen to think outlawing all abortions is nuts) , but nationally agree that there is no federal right to an abortioin. Roe v. Giuliani ought to be brought up on RICO charges for his part in the destruction of WTC evidence. The NIST report earlier this week indicated they still "don't know" why Rudy's steel collapsed at such (relatively) low temperatures.

Mike, are you serious in your calling Ron Paul a RINO? Do you even know what that term means? I am so sick od hearing about abortion as a campaign issue. I'm trying to figure out why we are all still discussing "pro life" opinions. Birth control is readily available to 15 year olds, for free. They have birth control implants that can last for 5 years. There are condoms and who knows what else available to prevent unwanted pregnacy. Onward - Conservatives may find many faults with Giuliani but leadership is not one of them. In the end if Giuliani is the GOP candidate, he will find the entire party supporting him.

I sear the more stupidity I see amongst Americans, the more I doubt democracy. I believe Brownback is a by far better candidate than Giuliani and let me tell you why based on the five issues at hand.

Giuliani makes a bad position on Economics by endorsing the same failed economic standards he used in New York. For you people that are not experts in economics, when you make tax cuts and support militarian positions you end up in dept. How can you pay soldiers without making taxes? I don't support his take on Nuclear Energy. If you've studied nuclear energy you would be aware that is by far more dangerous to the environment than fossil fuels. It is better to have to world cooked than to expose any environment to substantial deadly amounts of radiation. His stance of health care only helps the rich, which make less than 5% of the population. I do support his take on illegal immgration, but not on the Iraq War. You cannot make Tax cuts and support a war. How on earth are you going to pay the soldiers? Where do you think their paychecks come from?

The one thing I support more than anything else is an intellectual community. Since most Americans are failing to establish such a community, they must either improve themselves intellectually or have someone else run their government for them.

Do the single issue voters understand that if a well round candidate like Rudy is nominated and they do not vote for a republican they will get something far worse? Taxes will skyrocket. The dems have already stated rates are going up if they win. Rudy at least pays service to the pro-life crowd. Hilly will want to put Planned Parenthood clinics in high schools. Do not even think what could happen to the Supreme Court.
Our next President has to have at least a clue on the way the majority of people feel and think. Most people do not care about who marries who as long as they do not have to watch. If protecting marriage is so important ban divorce. Get one of the “values” candidates to start with that and then tell me how I should live my live my life. Brownback should put his support behind Huckabee. Brownback seemed to be wrapped in his religious out look and Huckabee seems to match much of that. It would make this a more interesting race.

Ron Paul is the obvious choice for president. He has strong core Republican values that he has upheld for the past 20 years he has been in Washington. He is sometimes the single voice of opposition in our entire government and he sticks to his values nonetheless. ..So he comes out against the Iraq war, since when is war a Republican "value"? Maybe the rest of the Republicans should take some time to reevaluate their stance on the war.

Sen. Sam Brownback, and the rest of the 2008 Republican field, has reminded me of "The Peter Principle".

The book The Peter Principle states "In a hierarchy every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence." Formulated by Dr. Laurence J. Peter in his 1968 book The Peter Principle, the principle pertains to the level of competence of the human resources in a hierarchical organization. The principle sometimes applies to U.S. Presidential elections.

In the 2000 and 2004 elections the winner - George W. Bush - clearly rose to his level of incompetence (although voters cannot claim to be blameless in the results).

The Republican field for 2008 consists of a group of Peter Principle wannabees (Giuliani, McCain, Romney, and Thompson, etc., with the possible exception of Ron Paul).

Only the Democrats offer voters a range of capable, credible candidates for President - Clinton, Obama, Edwards, Biden, Dodd, and Richardson.

The last thing American needs from this election is another "Peter Principle" president!

Brownback is a dull candidate, not sharp on the campaign trail and like most in the party out of step with the needs of America. America is looking for a nationalist candidate ready to address infrastructure and needs here, cutting back on those abroad. Abortion, while important, is way on the backburner of problems right now. Christian right wingers are fringe and have no basis. I like Ron Paul but he has no chance. Gore-Obama would win this race hands down but Gore doesn't have the guts to get in. Duncan Hunter would be very good for the GOP. Romney and Guiliani are bought and sold. Romney has no chance in the South and Guiliani has little either. McCain blew it but could gain some ground back since Thompson seems lazy and not burning with the passion to win. Hillary may win by default like Nixon in 68 with his Southern strategy and law and order theme but the country is hungry for direction and answers at home. Get it candidates? It is not all about globalization for Americans.

Ron Pauls currency plan is actually MUCH BETTER than "just gold backed money". He wants to introduce a parallel system based on gold and silver's weight alone.. so you buy 5 gallons of gas for 1oz of silver, and you pay with a 1oz silver note, or your debit card that measures your money in ounces of silver. There is no "price" of gold or silver.. the gold and silver itself *IS* the money. Where as gold can be affected by supply and demmand silver can not be, nobody has ever cornered the market on silver in all of human history, there is just too much of it.

He also would remove the legal tender laws allowing any other competing system to be developed (including the use of our current one). His proposed system is more of a natural free market system than anything else out there, is also eliminates inflation forever.

The Constitution also mandates that only gold and silver are legal tender.. So your absolutly wrong with your example.. Paul does follow the Constitution and seems to know it better than you do. You will have to try and cite another issue where Paul does not follow the constitution. (dont bother, you wont find one.)

There are those out there that would attempt to use the power of government to silence people and an to enforce morality with police. No true Christian should support these things. Jesus does not rule by the sword, his world is voluntarily. You "choose" to come to Christ, you not forced to do so.

I love all you Ron Paul guys. It's refreshing to see people willing to back someone who has no snowball's chance.

A couple of tips:
1) Quit calling him "Dr." Ron Paul. Giving him a title only detracts from his electability. It makes him sound like a snob.
2) Get off your computers and actually do some election work. It amazes me how many people will post in an election forum, but how did Ron do during the Iowa Straw vote? And it's not just Iowa. Ron Paul supporters are practically invisible at GOP events all around the country.
3) Realize that he has zero chance this year, but that you're working for a long term cause, not 2008. You keep claiming that Ron Paul "can win" in 2008. This is why the rate of abortions fell during the Clinton administration and have been steadily on the rise during the Bush administration. I am sure Brownback and Huckabee are both sincere, but you can't use the government to dictate social policy. People should care for the children they conceive because it is the moral thing to do, not because it happens to be a law. Laws change. Our government is already so big and has gotten its money (which btw is our money) into so many things that it has become a de facto state religion. Conservatives who want to see conservative values flourish will stop trying to make them law. The government needs to shrink if religious and charitable organizations are to survive and become truly influential.

I'm not a Rudy fan but what up with this idiot calling him a "terrible mayor"? He cleaned up a city when they said it couldn't be done. Before Rudy, you couldn't walk the streets of NYC after dark. When I was a kid, my dad (who's from Brooklyn) would remind me not to look anyone in the eye when we walked down the street there. Now, you can walk through Time Square at 1am and feel safe as anywhere. Dinkins and everyone before him appeased the criminal element. Rudy got rid of it.

And if you ever saw Rudy in an emergency, he was spectacular. I was there during a blizzard in 2000, and he has press conferences every hour on the hour, reassuring everyone in that fine city that all was OK and that city workers were cleaning up quickly.

I seem to remember a funny little man in the early 1930's with a penchant for war who talked in platitudes that got him big poll numbers, too... Is that what you want, America? Ron Paul speaks of freedom, Liberty and the rule of law. All this talk about Ron Paul is hard to fathom in the times in which we live. True, there has always been an isolationist wing to our party, and I'll admit that I myself was an acolyte of Pat Buchanan once upon a time, and I am still with him on trade, immigration etc. Unfortunately, after 9-11 I had to part ways with Pat B, Ron Paul etc on foreign policy. There is a time for everything in life- including both war and peace. Islamic fundamentalism has served notice that they intend to kill us all, or at least as many of us as they can. God help us if they ever aquire weapons of mass destruction. Other generations have had to face evil in their own times, and our generation now has it's own task. We tried ignoring the muslim whack-jobs for the entire clinton administration. It didnt work, and now we have to face up to the fact that we are going to have to deal with these people. Ron Paul would be the worst possible president at this time in our nation's history. He would be OK under other circumstances, but not now. I am leaning heavily towards Romney, as I am impressed with his competence and track record as Governor on budgetary issues and on health-care. I wont vote for Guliani because of the "sanctuary city" he ran back in New York for all of the illegals. Thompson is an over-hyped dud, and McCain stabbed us conservatives in the back on the immigration issue. That leaves Romney for now, but if the religious right now throws all it's weight behind Huckabee after Brownback's departure, he could become a first-tier candidate with a real chance of winning the nomination. If that is the case, I will give him a hard look. He's been impressive in the debates. As for the people here who think that the GOP shouldnt nominate a pro-life candidate, or that we cant win with such a candidate... are you kidding me? Ronald Reagan, George H.W Bush, and George W. Bush got elected to 5 terms between the three of them and they are all pro-life, so I fail to see the logic. Most republicans are pro-life, so it follows that we will nominate a pro-life candidate. Giuliani is inexplicably and admittedly ahead in the polls, but I am baffled by that fact, and Brownback apparently feels that that will change. He's probably right.
