As a radical supporter of the First Amendment, I have opposed censoring even the most provocative and distasteful materials.
I do not support anything Rush Limbaugh has ever said, and my own opinion of the man as a human being is quite low. No, he should neither be censored by the government nor the media. But anyone who listens to him for "facts" does has not earned and do not deserve the rights and privileges of American citizenship.

This vanreuter character comes blasting on this board with his biased facts as if he were the Word come down. Like Limbaugh, he cries when his judgment or intelligence is questioned, bleats and blares his acid in whatever direction he pleases. Like Limbaugh, he is wind tunnel.

If that is what people want to read on a political blog on Monday morning...well, I think you know my opinion.

Maybe someday vanreuter will have his own radio show where he gets to make fun of others and scream foul at every challenge.

Until then, I'll be waiting, listening, but no longer reading First Read, what was once one of the best political blogs online.

Here is another perspective for folks that don't understand Obama's doctrine.

To understand how Obama can continue to deal with McKlurkin, one has to understand what I will call the Obama doctrine.

There is no doubt that McKlurkin's views on gays are disturbing. Obama quickly issued a statement unequivocally disagreeing with them, but explained that the singer's views reflect a broader struggle within the black community (in this case) to come to terms with homosexuality both in the home and as an issue of the political discourse.

The point Obama is making is that McKlurkin deserves a seat at the table of political dialogue; that one cannot ignore homophobia by sweeping it under the carpet, and then wonder why it is there, why your attempts to whitewash dissent didn't work, and why there is still dirt on the floor that lies beneath that carpet you so assiduously spent an entire morning cleaning.

When Obama talks about unity, he is not saying that it already exists. The Obama Doctrine unequivocally states that one cannot achieve unity and change unless one is willing to directly engage those with different views.

Thus, Obama's acceptance of a financial contribution or a form of support from McKlurkin is both sound of doctrine and morally legitimate AS LONG AS OBAMA DOES NOT SUPPORT HIS VIEWS AND SAYS SO PUBLICLY, which he has.

Barack frequently points out that, as President, he may at times disagree with us and we may disagree with him. Either way, however, he will still fight for us, not against us.

That is a key tenet of the doctrine, and it also speaks to the direction of Obama's political ideology. While most politicians support a laundry list of issue first and join a party or caucus second, Obama does the opposite, because he recognizes, as few politicians do, that any policy platform must first rest on a philosophy --in this case, of hope and change-- before earning any legitimacy.

Obama is embracing McKlurkin as a citizen, not as a thinker. And in doing so, his message of unity is magnified in its unexpected and splendid admixture of strengths and challenges.

When Obama tells us that a vote for him entails some risk. This is what he means. The risk is NOT because he is half black, or young, or a first-term U.S. senator, as the media would have one believe.

The risk lies in our being willing to confront the growing pains associated with bringing a country together under common goals while, at the same time, being honest about the fact that we must speak to those we disagree with. That is why he is able to unequivocally state that he would consider meeting with dictators without pre-conditions.

The exercise of leadership and courage always involves risks and forays into untrodden ground. That is another key tenet of Obama's doctrine.

I think what we are missing about Obama is ... Republicans will not work with anybody named: Clinton. I will grant you that Bill Clinton did alot for the country and Black People benefited ... But do you remember the government shutting down under a Clinton. No President will be able to get their program through without some Republicans going along with them. There will be times when certain Democrats will not just vote with the "Party" because of the dis-advantages to their particular state. In those cases the President will have to get Republicans to make up for those votes. Mrs. Clinton will not be able to do that.

Look at the division that has already been caused just in these primaries. Obama appeals to Independents, Democrats, and Republicans. He may not have alot of Foreign Policy experience but do you think the Leaders of the Middle Eastern Countries would be more willing deal with someone who looks like them or someone of European decent? Just look at our (US) position in the world community. Look at the perspection of Black people (in general) and Black Males (in particular) in this nation. Black people though out the US and the world benefit from Obama being President. Minority Groups of all types (in this Nation) benefit from Obama being President. So what if he didn't grow up in our neighborhoods! He represents a "Step" in the right direction for all of us. He proves you do not have to be a ball-player or an entertainer to be relevent. He must be doing somthing right ... He mastered Chicago Politics. You talk about having credibility ... Black People in Chicago do not elect candidates who can't get the job done. Plus ... he got alot of White people who voted for him. His challenger, there, tried to inject race ... He won anyway. I think he is the "Real Deal".

I understand why Oprah endorses him. He's just like her. He's learned how to beat the "White Man" at his own game.
