Social contract is a pretty good description. As Americans we tend to believe that capitalism and democracy are almost synonomous but that isn't necessarily the case. The nature of capitalism is to sell everything for the highest possible rate, concentrate wealth in the hands of those who control the means of production, and pay workers the least amount that results in a warm body. Obviously the masses would not vote for that result. For many decades we've mediated that conflict by allowing business owners, especially large business owners, to do pretty much as they please as long as they share enough with the middle class to keep them secure. Now that social contract is unraveling and the foul mood of the electorate is partly a reflection of that. If middle class security isn't restored democracy will force changes that probably will be an overreaction to the situation and hurt the country as a result.

Why in the year 2007 do we have people die, because they cant afford to go to the hostpital? How come the retired couple has to make a choice between staying warm, eating, or there medications?

This story is much too important to be relegated to a little column comment. The AP has slightly better coverage. Clearly, we are ready to debate this as a serious issue.

I, frankly, cannot begin to understand what segment of society would oppose policies based on the social contract which was a part of the original Declaration of Independence and writings by Thomas Paine.

The vast selfishness, greed and domination which characterize the current diminishment of social contract is characteristic of a primitive psychology and sure to bring about an increasingly primitive and brutal social fabric. That it has been brought to us by an administration which touts itself as champions of a "culture of life" is the big lie of all big lies.

The current administration has brought us 6 years of greed, cronyism and corruption. I'm fed up. My tax dollars, and I would be glad to pay a bit more, should be going to improve my community, help my fellow man. Instead all our resources are lining the pockets of the gluttonous, self-righteous, and cruel.

Anyone who believes that John Edwards is anything but truthful in what he espouses is, at best, deluding themselves. This is a good, honest, caring individual who wants to see the US flourish. You talk about Socialism and Communism and Lefties, but you don't talk about what he is saying.

Answer me a question, what is wrong with Nationalized Health Care? What is wrong with paying fair taxes to use National resources? What is wrong with wanting America to lead through peace and set an example of tolerance for the whole world? What is wrong with expecting a company that lays off 2000 people not to pay its CEO $5 million in salary?

I can only assume that the people who are calling all these things "Socialist" are not in a position to avail themselves of these programs. I mean we know that the top 1% of the earners in this country are being taken care of right now, and these sort of programs may affect them. So we really want to base what 100% of the citizens have available to them on what 1% of the citizens will fight against tooth and nail?

The idea of a social contract is nothing new. It was popularized in the 17th and 18th centuries by Thomas Hobbes, John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. All a social contract theory refers to is some sort of agreement by which people form a nation and maintain a social order. In such an agreement, the people give up some rights to the government in exchange for social order.

But I like John Edwards. He seems to come up with all sorts of hooks. I'm not sure he will be able to win the nomination but he's not a bad guy at all.

Trial lawyers receive a portion of the amount awarded by the JURY or the amount the defendant AGREES to settle for, according to an agreement with the client. The JURY decides how much a trial lawyer makes when it determines the value of damages caused to the plaintiff. However, many of the cases are settled out of court, and why would a defendant settle for a large sum of money if they did nothing wrong?

There are two other ways an attorney is paid. Either according to an agreement between the attorney and their boss, or according to a contract with the client which lays out an hourly rate.

So how do you prefer to limit the amount of money a trial lawyer can make? Should the jury be excluded from the process, should the defendant be forced to go to court and disallowed from settling out of court, should a client be prohibitted from voluntarily entering into a representation agreement with an attorney of their choice?

Now the frivilous lawsuits the rightwing loves to talk about. The system has a rule designed to deal with lawsuits which can be characterized as frivilous. Look up Rule 11 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and (to the best of my knowledge) all states have enacted a similar provision.

Chuck Todd already let it slip that Edwards is detested among the DC elite. Why? because he is a threat to their business as usual corporate run policies. The press has nothing but negatives for him because thats what they are ordered to do. Edwards is the one for "the people" We should demand the powers that be give him the press coverage he deserves. As of now the press has been lousy and biased to the max, and might add not in his favor.He has led on every issue this entire campaign, yet he has been marginalized, ridiculed, and up to now neutralized by a complicit media. 'We the people' should demand journalistic integrity! More Edwards coverage on hi many substantive policy proposals, no more tired RW memes...

John Edwards (and Hillary Clinton and Senator Obama for that matter) have not accomplished one significant thing in their lives. List ten, no make that five, of accomplishments he has had in the past 10 years that do not include fuzzy and worthless resume enhancing words like 'led', 'supported', 'voted for', and, my personal favorite, 'fought for'. Bet you can't. These people have no experience. None. Zip. Nada. Zilch. Talking about doing something is in a difficult league than actually have done something. Anyone can talk about doing something.

It takes courage to stand and say what needs to be said, as John Edwards does. It takes intelligence to formulate plans of real change for the good of all citizens of this country. It takes vision to lead on the issues as he has. It will take bold change to make the needed repairs to this nation after Bush, Clinton and Bush. The American people deserve better. Mr. Edwards has my vote.

John Edwards must know he won't raise the big bucks that Clinton and Obama raise with positions like this. There are not many business-types who see that the viability of their companies is tied to the viability of the U.S. - from the needy all the way to the mega-billionaires.

Obviously, John Edwards is less concerned about the number of dollars he raises than he is about being transparent of what his presidency will be about. The further he goes along in the campaign and reveals himself, the more impressive he is! This contract is one of the boldest and most forward-thinking expression of leadership ever heard from a U.S. presidential candidate.

According to an article in the Week in Review section of today's (Sunday, Oct 28) New York Times, Mr. Edwards, for instance, was known for choosing his cases with care. "'He was very selective,' said James P. Cooney III, who defended a dozen medical malpractice cases brought by Mr. Edwards. 'He only took the best cases, and by that I don’t mean the ones with the highest damages. I mean the ones where somebody had done something really bad.'"

Edwards works hard, does his research, plans with care, and that's why I support him for President.

Sounds good but I wonder, does all mean ALL?
"new universal retirement account requiring every business to automatically enroll its workers in at least one plan"
Again the all question comes to my mind, Does this include people have no legal right to work in this country, but do?
"universal health care"
Are we going to provide health care for every person found within the borders of the United States?
"the strengthening of organized labor"
Having been a member of O.L. for many years I can affirm that O.L. has a tradition of leaning pretty heavily on the socialist side of the wall.
"a say on executive pay"
Does this include a say in the pay of U.S. Presidents, Senators, Representatives?? Probably not.
"John F. Kennedy once said, 'The heart of the question is whether all Americans are to be afforded equal rights and equal opportunities, whether we are going to treat our fellow Americans as we want to be treated.'"
While not an ardent admirer of JFK, I think it is important that we not his use of the combined words 'all Americans' and 'our fellow Americans'. Can you find these word combinations in Mr, Edwards Speech?
Could the word Socialist be applied to Mr. Edwards speech? Is there a difference between a socialist, a modern democrat, and an American Communist?
Could you tell me what it is?
