based on news conferences I have seen in the past, the questions struck me as more reasonable than the type of emotional, inane, knee-jerk questions our mainstream media asks to get a hype reaction.

I thought they (the FEMA staff) honestly asked the type of administrative-type questions that a purely administrative organization would be prepared to answer. If I worked for them on this disaster event I would not want to be talking with reporters, I'd rather be doing the other, more actionable parts of my job.

A fake press conference...... I tend to think that most press conferences with the president and fema and the like tend to be fake even if they have real reporters there. The white house correspondents are people accepted by the white house to ask questions. If there is a real reporter asking tough questions he/she will be thrown out, not allowed to return or just simply ignored. Before those of you think I am blaming bush (who I believe should be impeached) it occurs in all presidency more or less. So with this conference it was fake but at least it was all up front and no pretense. Unlike some other new conferences I have seen.

Remember the Bush "town hall meetings" where only supporters could attend? How about paying "reporters" like Armstrong Williams based on how often they wrote articles praising Bush policies. Or, how about when they created their own "news reports" by fake reporters that were used without qualification by local tv stations. The Bush Administration threatens the very foundations of our democracy. Those on this site who cannot see this threat should re-examine what it means to be an American. Of course, during the Revolutionary War, 1 in five Americans supported the British. That's the same level of support that Bush has today.

Let me get this straight...FEMA had time to structure their fake questions, prepare their fake answers and get their staff in place for their "news conference" but they only gave reporters 15 minutes to get there for it? Please.
While President Bush was in San Diego yesterday with shirt sleeves rolled up for his latest photo op, all air traffic in the area was grounded for his 'security' so no planes or helicopters were able to actually fight the fires for the six hours King Bush was in town.
And, although the fires were out in the Rancho Bernardo neighborhood Bush chose for his photo op, residents who'd been told they could finally return to what was left of their homes had to sit in their cars for three hours, in 95 degree heat, waiting for King Bush to leave.
Just like in New Orleans, we have a fake administration, pretending to care when they really just want to puff out their chests in front of the cameras. Bush was actually in San Diego, strumming guitars, while New Orleans was dying. This time around, he's strumming San Diegans.

It's amazing how people deflect the issue of this news conference with a claim that others are deflecting from the wholey UNRELATED topic of the Presidency. There was nothing wrong with the questions that were asked, in fact, it was expedient to have them asked since none of the reporters were responsible enough to ask them instead of inane "global warming" type questions. The manner in which they asked was questionable, but FEMA did NOT claim that these people were reporters, and did not prevent present reporters from asking their own questions. What you have seen on your news outlets doesn't even come close to the reality of watching neighbors homes go up in flames.
How many people heard the head of OCFA (Orange County Fire Authority) blame both state and federal governments for failing to implement recommendations made over 3 years ago for such scenarios?

What I find most enlightening is the way people on here are attempting to defend FEMA. There are actually a few valid ways to defend what FEMA did. One could point out that essentially what FEMA did was issue an F.A.Q. (as someone pointed out). And what they said in this release is not a lot different than what they would have said while reporters were present.

But instead of using logic like that, the FEMA and Bush supporters mostly resort to attacking the Democrats and the media.

A bit off topic here but, just as an aside, can we agree to stop referencing the rebuilding of the Gulf Coast as being in any way a measure of progress rather than the exercise in civic idiocy that it really is? New Orleans should have been left under water and rebuilt somewhere else that was, hmmm...NOT SURROUNDED BY LEVEES WHILE SITTING BELOW SEA LEVEL.

Any fool that wants to rebuild in that area should be allowed to do so, of course. America IS free, after all. But they shouldn't be given ANY government assistance in their lunacy. Otherwise, it just gives them another excuse to kvetch about how the government hasn't done enough for them and given them enough handouts once the inevitable (read: entirely, utterly predictable...read: guaranteed) happens and they go for another swim.

However, the Air Force currently claims to be giving the matter more attention, with hopes that the necessary tanks will be available late in 2008, coinciding no doubt with the return of Elvis from outer space and the launch of the worldwide disco dancing tour of the Tooth Fairy . . .

I LIVE in San Diego... I was evacuated along with 500,000+ other residents, and FEMA wasn't there doing ANYTHING!!! It was the people of San Diego county who helped evacuees when help was needed. It was friends, family, police and LOCAL fire officials, and total strangers who stepped in when all hell broke loose out here... NOT FEMA, not the Governator, and certainly not Bush or any of his "hand picked" cronies. We were 3 DAYS into the firestorm before ANY government official showed up for a photo-op and BS session.

FEMA made promises after Katrina that they NEVER fufilled... We'll see how many they follow through with THIS time. However, considering our governor is a ass-kissing, Bush-league "republicant", maybe this time they WILL do what they promised.

In response to all of you who are asking what the big deal is, I'll spell it out: A FEDERALLY FUNDED AGENCY STAGED A PRESS CONFERENCE AND PASSED IT OFF AS REAL. Big. Major. Problem. Inexcusable in a federal employee presenting information to ME whether I'm a democrat or republican. If they didn't have time to get reporters in, then they should have issued a disclaimer at the beginning of the presentation, indicating that they were going to conduct a scripted Q&A session in the FORMAT of a press conference, with paid employees answering the questions. ANYTHING LESS IS PRESENTING INFORMATION WITH THE INTENT TO DECEIVE. Which means that ANYTHING said in the session is open to doubt as to its truth. Because if they didn't have something to hide, why in the world would they have acted in such as bizarre fashion? I can't believe that the White House thinks we should be satisfied with a mere apology. Remember, people, these federal workers, from the president on down, are OUR EMPLOYEES. How would you feel if you knew that someone working directly for you, who was hired have an important meeting on behalf of your business, skirted that job, fabricated a meeting, and passed it off to you as real? This whole incident shows a shocking lack of respect for our intelligence, as well as a lack of respect for the place of honor we've given these people in our society.
