The BBC had a long radio piece about how big a role the military plays in the Pakistani economy. When a country works like that, you won't really have democracy whether Musharraf takes off the uniform or not. The US has put incredible pressure on Pakistan. It's not a healthy relationship. What if the Pakis and the Turks just start to blow us off? What if we have just stoked the extremists, in both countries. Between a military coup or an extremist civil war, what good happens in Pakistan? Isn't this papering over some real issues? Oh, like this election campaign?

These are, on some level, two countries that want to modernize, that 'like' the West. I think someone should ask Biden, who is the 'foreign policy guy', why he thinks having an election anytime soon is really going to reshape Pakistan. It's another country where the wealth is not evenly distributed, but there's growth. If the political process will really transform the economic imbalances, fine. But with the military controlling hotels, an airline, and other economic assets, what is really going to change?

Does a country like Chile, where brutal stability eventually brought some prosperity, provide any kind of model? What are we doing? What do we want?

Clinton is a pragmatic person. She understands that very few things are black and white. And while most americans disagree with the "premise" of driver's licenses for illegals, this anger doesn't translate into solutions in states were illegals on the road without basic driver knowledge is a problem. This problem didn't crop up overnight, and it won't be solved overnight. Years of both parties ignoring the realities is why we are here today. Blaming goveneors who are just trying to solve the problems is really, fruitless. While I don't agree with Spitzer, I certainly understand his problem. That's what Clinton was saying. It sounded wishy washy, but actually, it's a very complicated issue that can't practically be answered in a "yes"/"no" soundbite. I find it funny, however, that Clinton's view on this seems to be that the STATES should solve these complicated problems as they see fit. A pretty "conservative" view. Yet, republicans are beating her up. I wonder what Obama's view on this issue is, or Edwards? Would their opinions be to the left of Clinton? You can bet on it. It's just funny, when people make determinations based on soundbites. I guess that's how we ended up with GWB as president. God, I hope we can exercise a little critical thinking this time around.

Actuctly if I were Cliton I will not worry too much. The problem is even Cliton drop this big in NH and nationally, Obama can't pick up votes. If you look at the historical data in NH or national polls, Obama just bounced back to his normal poll numbers, which is middle twenties. In other words, Cliton lost big, Obama or Edwards didn't gain or gain little. However, if this trend continues in the next two month, then Cliton should be worried, very worried.

And I might add, Joe is also unlike Senators Shumer, Feinstein and Specter who also have refused to take a principled stand and went ahead to approve the nomination of Judge Mukasey to the post of AG, sending the nomination to the full senate. My God, the Democrats have control of the Senate (and Senator Specter, even though you are a Republican, I expect more from you) and yet they still do the President's bidding.

The soul of this nation is at stake and we the people, must say no to an administration who is trashing the very values the sets us apart from, other powerful nations that existed over the course of world history and from tyranical powers of the world today. If we follow the sullied path laid out by this administration, we will negate the spirit of virtue, so long held by our great nation. We will do significant (perhaps irreversible) damage to our world standing.

Waterboarding does little to help us win the hearts and minds of the people of the world. And ironically it is (as is all forms of torture) absolutely ineffective in intelligence gathering; just ask John McCain. Think about it. If we engage in such practices are we much different than the likes of Saddam Hussein?

People, it is important that you write your senators and tell them to reject Judge Mukasey's nomination for AG in the formal vote of the senate. It will take all of two minutes to e-mail them. Tell your friends and family to do the same. Tell these senators that it is important that we stay true to justice and the rule of law, both of which have always been the hallmark of our great nation.

I think we need a class in flag protocol taught in all high schools. It could substitute for those unnecessary science classes and critical thinking. I get very confused. The article says the hand is supposed to be over the heart for the pledge, but in Boy Scouts I was taught to give the Boy Scout salute and I see other people giving military salutes. Come on people, let's all get on the same respect page. Speaking of Boy Scouts, I recently saw a picture of Boy Scouts standing in a circle burning our flag; they actually claimed that it was the proper respectful method of disposal. I know that can't be true because the Republicans say we need a constitutional amendment banning flag burning. I have also seen people cheering or even singing along when the National Anthem is played instead of quietly showing reverence with the hand on the heart. We need to publish the flag protocol, train people, pass laws, amend the constitution and punish the offenders if we are to be a great country where people show genuine reverence for symbols, images and anthems.

After reading Bill's comments in context, I don't see what all the fuss is about. He wasn't saying they were Swiftboating Hillary. He was voicing concern that the Republicans were going to turn immigration into a Swiftboat'able issue in 2008 using a 30-second soundbite from a debate. Notice he said that Hillary and all of the candidates should be required to speak about immigration and to answer questions on the issue. What he doesn't think is that it is helpful to the discussion to limit a response to 30 seconds on such a complex issue and, thus, open the door for the GOP to Swiftboat.

For those of you who pay attention to these polls (I still think they only amount to day to day snap shots - very volitile and very proximate) seismic shifts may be taking place this week. The electorate may be awakening to the fact that up until now Hillary has been the convenient anti-Bush candidate. They may be finally realizing that when you really examine her non-answer, answers, she offers little, if any, difference (in policy) from the present administration - no one could argue that she is far more intelligent than the present occupant of the oval office.

The internal polls are probably why the Clinton campaign is reacting as defensively as it is. The triangulating house of cards may be falling (have y'all ever noticed how those structures depend on those triangles to keep standing) and only those candidates with real principle will be left standing.
The day of reckoning is upon us. I can't wait for the next debate (11/15/07) in Nevada sponsored by CNN. I am sure that the Clintons will be happy that big bad Tim Russert, that 'Clinton hating, woman hating' guy, won't be the moderator. Unfortunately, she'll still have to face the rest of the boys' club. You know that Madam Speaker wouldn't be whining. She can take a punch like the best of 'em!

BTW the plan that Obama has put forth for the middle class is a breath of fresh air. Especially in reforming those ridiculous bankruptcy laws, pushed through by the corporate interests who just aren't making enough money with their credit card scams(with their 22% interest rates and 25 day billing cycles).

I was a Boy Scout too. I knew what to do with the flag because I was taught to preform it.
Little story, Last year I picked up 34 cloth american flags off the side of the road.They were muddy and torn, I took them and did what I was taught, burn them and bury the ashes. I could have been arrested for this reverence if the repub patriots had changed the constitution. I did notice that when I was picking these things up off the road many drivers with yellow magnet ribbons drove past with odd looks on their faces. Goes to show how symbols are only important when it involves claiming a greater Patriotism than others. Pakistan president just passed law that inforces the idea that no one can denigrate the pres. or government, perhaps that bit of patriotism would work well in the repub platform, sounds good, works well with right to life, more babies to grow up and salute the Great Leader.

Did you not know that Biden is the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee? That is how. And who says Biden called him?

It says something pretty important about Biden, doesn't it. Says world leaders are pretty comfortable with him and seek his counsel.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Wednesday shows Senator Hillary Clinton’s support slipping below 40% for the first time in more than a month. Overall, she has lost ten percentage points from her year-to-date peak reached on October 22. But still remains on top in the race for the Democratic Presidential Nomination.

Clinton now earns 39% of the vote, her lowest total since September 28. That’s still good enough, however, to hold an eighteen point advantage over Senator Barack Obama whose support is steady at 21%. Former Senator John Edwards has gained some ground in recent days and now earns the vote from 16% of Likely Democratic Primary Voters. New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson is a distant fourth at 4% and no other candidate tops the 3% level among Likely Democratic Primary Voters (see recent daily numbers).

Clinton has also lost ground in New Hampshire, home of the first-in-the-nation Presidential Primary. A Rasmussen Reports poll released today shows the frontrunner with a ten-point lead over Obama in the Granite State. That’s down from a sixteen-point lead before last week’s debate. Clearly, that debate has given an opening to Clinton’s rivals, but the big question is still whether it shake things up enough to derail the frontrunner. Separate survey data shows that 39% of voters think she is Very Likely to be the Democratic nominee. Only 11% say the same about Obama.

It would be a very good deal to have Musharraf thrown out, if you are the Taliban. Like many leaders the US has to deal with, Musharraf isn't even close to perfect, but he's the best we have in a not so good situation. Shoring this guy up, at least in the short term, is a lot better then the alternative in Pakistan. Some here think it's funny that Bush has yet another mess on his hands. This stuff though is serious business, and for you that want to bash Bush at every opportunity, you might want to rethink your position.

America has learned time and time again that there are unintended consequences of supporting unpopular repressive governments such as that of General Musharraf. In 1953 we toppled the popularly elected (but nationalistic) government of Iran and re-installed the hated Shah. This was all because Mahmoud Mossadeq (the strongly nationalistic leader of Iran) had nationalized the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company. The British convinced Eisenhower and the Congress that Mossadeq was a Communist and through Quentin Roosevelt working for the CIA we engineered the downfall of the Mossadeq government.

Twenty-six years later, after continued (U.S. supported) repressive rule by the Shah the gift was retuned with the take over by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and the leadership of the Ayatollah Khomeini.

The point is, when we support repressive governments we make enemies of the people and that is how radicals (in this case the Taliban) are able to take power. If we stick to principles, the support of democracy, the result, although never guarenteed will be the best of all possible outcomes. BTW there are countless other examples, it's just that this is most germane.

Let’s see… We have a Senator from Delaware (Biden) who already demonstrates the leadership and not only predicts the trouble in Pakistan that Musharraf has created, but then again demonstrates leadership by actually talking to him.

Other candidates say things like “Well, I would talk to Musharraf and say…” The point is ONE candidate already has the experience in dealing with the very difficult foreign policy matters that require leadership from the United States.

Then we have yet another episode of a Clinton parsing words (depends what the meaning of the word “is” is, depends on what state they’re in, and on and on and on).

It was an honest question, undeserving of a snarky answer. Chairmen of the committe or not, if you haven't noticed, Pakistan is in a bit of turmoil right now. I simply asked what the circumstances leading to the phone call were.

Regarding Chris's post, it would be hard for the other candidates to answer the exact same question that was asked of Clinton because that question was:

"Senator Clinton, Governor of New York Eliot Spitzer has proposed giving driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. You told the Nashua, New Hampshire editorial board it makes a lot of sense. Why does it make a lot of sense to give an illegal immigrant a driver's license?"

She said she thought it made sense because: "Well, what Governor Spitzer is trying to do is fill the vacuum left by the failure of this administration to bring about comprehensive immigration reform. We know in New York we have several million at any one time who are in New York illegally. They are undocumented workers. They are driving on our roads. The possibility of them having an accident that harms themselves or others is just a matter of the odds. It's probability. So what Governor Spitzer is trying to do is to fill the vacuum."

Then she said, "I just want to add, I did not say that it should be done, but I certainly recognize why Governor Spitzer is trying to do it. And we have failed --"

So Dodd told her, "Wait a minute. No, no, no. You said yes, you thought it made sense to do it."

Clinton: "No, I didn't, Chris."

So you see, the others can't answer this exact question for her. If you are referring to this question:

"Do you support his plan?"

Dodd said this: "...a license is a privilege, and that ought not to be extended, in my view." He is against it.

Obama said: "I think that it is a -- the right idea. And I disagree with Chris, because there is a public safety concern. We can make sure that drivers who are illegal come out of the shadows, that they can be tracked, that they are properly trained, and that will make our roads safer. That doesn't negate the need for us to reform illegal immigration." He is for it.

Huh. I'm not sure I believe his remarks weren't directly engineered by Hil's campaign. It's consistent with her strategy so far, of speaking out of one side of her (actual) mouth, saying "I'd never suggest that," while the campaign speaks out of the other.

This really pisses me off cuz it turns feminism on its head. It patronizes women under the guise of protecting them. Hil was a fair target because she's the front-runner, and there was nothing underhanded or remotely sexist about what anyone said against her in that debate. I would normally expect better of Bill. This perhaps illustrates how badly both of them want the Clinton dynasty to continue.

MUSHARRAF rescinded that permission and won't let Bush insert our people into Pakistan to look where it is generally thought that he (Bin Laden) is hiding.

Cristelle and all others should know that Biden has been (and still is) a principled and involved chairman for the senate committees of ForeignRelations and the Judiciary. the 2 most relevant committees.

Senate committees are the motor of the senate. senate does legislative and power-check work which is the framework of everything in our society. If it wasn't for guys like Biden and Leahy, America would have been less respected in the world by the time this Bush took over, and less able to get up again after he leaves. But he can do more in the post of president!

Biden is a nice man, a great man. See or Read more abour him. Biden for Prez of US !.
