Larry, I think the point Dr. Paul was making was simply to recognize that the president can't singlehandedly eliminate the IRS -- he would have to go to congress. However, by changing the foreign policy by bringing troops home from our bases in 150+ countries, he could majorly slash the budget. This would probably increase the likelihood of congress being in favor of eliminating the IRS; if we cut spending enough, a very valid case can be made that the IRS serves no purpose!

It doesn't matter which hard asset you use to back the currency, as long as it's a hard asset. This prevents government from printing money to pay its expenses (once it has taxed & borrowed all it can). When the Fed inflates the money supply (as it does constantly), demand for each individual dollar drops--therefore, each dollar IN YOUR POCKET or IN YOUR BANK is worth less and less. This has been going on throughout the 20th century, since the creation of the Federal Reserve Bank.

Fiat money, aka print-on-demand money, allows government to grow itself by sucking wealth right out of your pocket.

If each dollar is backed up by a hard asset, like gold, then government must spend within its means--and the money of every individual retains its value. Gold is simply the metal that people have used for thousands of years as currency, so its natural to use that.

Ron Paul calls inflation "the most regressive tax." It hurts the poor and the middle class, but enhances the ultra-rich because the money goes to huge government contracts, etc. (And then, of course, is recycled into congressional and presidential campaigns for lobbyist-friendly candidates.)

Dr. Paul knows that Title 26 is presently criminally misapplied to the average working American. In answer to "Why on earth doesn't this man get more time to speak on the news?"... As many will tell you, there is a bias against him out there in MSM (main stream media). The biggest reason, however, is his unnaturally low poll results (5%). These polls are not corrupt, but they are behind the times and behind technology and therefore inacurate. There are two problems with them.

1. They are "land line" polls. How many of you guys own landlines. Traditional families own landlines, and thus Ron Paul's tech savy supporters go unheard. Seems insignificant but it could put him a couple % points higher.

2. People who traditionally vote republican in the primaries/ voted last election are the ones who are called on these polls. We all know how much the republican base has shrunk, many of those people who switched out are switching back to vote for Paul, not to mention libertarians, constitutionalists,independants, unregistered, and democrats, who are switching over, and those who arent switching but will vote in open primaries. If he's nominated by the Republican party I will vote for him. The checks and balances inherent in the constitution, and to which he would most certainly adhere, would prevent carte blanche on his part. But if you think Democrats have been hard on Bush, imagine what they would do to Paul once they found out how conservative he really is. There isn't much "nuance" there.

A Paul presidency would be as interesting as any other, I suppose.

I do have a problem when a candidate demagogues the gasoline price issue as if it is something Americans have to deal with all by themselves. Gasoline is expensive everywhere, even in green Europe. What the U.S. economy and government have solely to do with that I have yet to understand.

Ron doesn't want to get back to the gold standard. Period. This is false news spread by those who lack the initiative to do the research. Intrinsic value, nothing can posess. People give value to things, and it just so happens that gold is recognized globally.

Paul if elected president appoints the Secretary of State. The Secrretary of State can correct the fraud committed by Secretary of State Philander Knox when he falsely declared the 16th amendment ratified in 1913. The truth is. as written, the 16th Amendment was only approved by two states.

The other option is that Paul appoints Federal Judges and can appoint Federal Judges that will hear the case and based on the evidence rule the 16th Amendment was never ratified. Bruce does have a point. People with economics experience might have more relevance here. He sounds like he knows this stuff.

There is a fair amount of dense economics jargon at the beginning (but still well worth listening to). For people who prefer a “bottom line”, I recommend the section from 6:20 to the end as most germane.

What Ron Paul has proposed doing is floating an alternate currency backed by gold. We would still be able to use our Federal Reserve Notes, but we would have an option to also use the gold backed notes.

The gold backed notes would fluctuate in value on the world market the same way our federal reserve notes do now. They would fluctuate in value the same way that gold and silver fluctuate in value now. When times are hard, the value goes up, when times are good the value would go down. But you would have a choice.
I think the most powerful thing he wants to do is pay down the debt. Noone has ever considered doing this even when we had a budget surplus under Clinton. Everyone was just worried about how to spend the surplus. They didn't even consider paying down the debt.

If Ron Paul could eliminate spending by 30%, a Supreme Court Ruling could then eliminate the IRS. The court will not rule to eliminate the IRS as long as spending is at a level that eliminating the IRS would destroy the country. The IRS is unconstitutional, and the Supreme Court has ruled in the past that the 16th ammendment gave no new taxing authority. The IRS has been allowed to live in and destroy our country, along with all of its other fellow illegal imigrants.

The dollar should be tied to something with value. God is currently nearing a record high at around $830 so it seems it has a lot more value than a paper dollar. Gold has always been valued as a precious metal throughout time. It doesn't have to be gold though...and Paul doesn't think so either.

It is very sad that I had never heard of (or remembered hearing of) Ron Paul until a month ago when an online friend (who has a history of scoffing at politics) forwarded a link to his web site. Within 10 minutes of reading, I was convinced this is the politician I (and many, many others, apparently) have been screaming for for over a decade! He is the first politician to which I have ever donated money. We need more representatives like him.

Ever since I watched the first republican debate I have been a Ron Paul supporter. It amazed me that I liked what he had to say, since I am not a republican. However, I don't consider myself a democrat anymore. I am an independent and I'm voting for Ron Paul.
I found out something the other day. I asked at the courthouse if I would be able to vote for either party in the presidential primary if I were to change my affiliation to independent. If not, I was planning on changing my registration to republican just so I could vote for Ron Paul. However, I was told that no one in Mississippi is registered by party affiliation. We are able to vote in either primary. So fellow Mississippi citizens, vote for Ron Paul. He makes sense. He's straightforward. He will follow the Constitution. He loves America. He is not beholden to corporate sponsors, unlike all the other candidates, be they democrat or republican.

Someone else did try to get rid of the Federal Reserve Notes. His name was John F. Kennedy. Anyone who collects old money surely has seen the "United States Notes" which he had issued constitutionally. The intrinsic value of gold is that it is a fixed resource. It is limited, therefore, it can be a true representative of 'value' which is a transient and non-tangible thing. The net net of going to a standard where you are partially gold backed, is that the price of gold will rise and rise and rise as the amount of 'value' in the economic system rises. That allows for all to have a clear picture of things rather than the muddled picture we have today.

For example; I got a 4% raise this year, but inflation (with respect to the GDP) went up 3%, so I really got a 1% raise. Yet the Fed also inflated the money supply through lowering the interest rates. Let's say inflation (with respect to the money supply) went up 3% also. In reality, with respect to my purchasing power, I got a 2% pay cut this year.

Taken over the course of 40% years, it is easy to see why my parent's dollars in 1974 purchased 3x as many goods/services than my dollars do today.

Most people don't see this, so they think a 4% raise is great. They also think the $50K they make today is much better than the $20K their parents made 35 years ago. In reality, neither of those things is great. They make less than their parents and less than they did last year.

As far as I know, Ron Paul’s link with unpopular organizations like Stormfront is that he has received support from their members. And that he took the opportunity to be on Alex Jones’ show in order to get his message out. His message was the same on that program as it is now, and the same as it has been for over 20 years. Google for his writings, they’re easy to find.

He also gets support from people who think that 9/11 was a government conspiracy (so-called “truthers”).

He also gets support from college students, engineers, pop singers, soccer moms, retirees, construction workers…

That’s the thing about a candidate who advocates the liberties this country was founded on: he gets support from a wide variety of citizens. Many of his supporters have little in common except that they are Americans who want the federal government to adhere to the Constitution. They’ve found Ron Paul to be a straight-talking, consistent candidate who promises to work towards that goal.

Bear in mind that assuming that X supports Paul means that Paul supports X is a fallacy. It’s easy to find out what Paul supports. Watch his videos and read his positions. Decide for yourself.

Quite the contrary. Dr. Paul is not "for" gay rights, or womens rights. He is for individual rights as opposed to group rights, and stated this clearly in one of the debates.

I do not bring this up to criticize your comment, just to note that there is a very important distinction.

Historically, politicians have used (groupX) rights to carve the Amercian people into voting blocks, a divide and conquer scenario, if you will.

Dr. Paul fervently believes, as did the founders, that rights are inherent to the individual. He simply believes that the government should stay out of the lives of individuals (especially the federal government) except to protect liberty (especially property rights, of which self ownership is the original and foundational component).

Social Security is a Ponzi scheme, pure and simple. Private citizens are convicted of felonies when they run them, as was Ponzi, the man generally recognized as originating the format (look it up on Wikipedia or Google).

While Dr. Paul would like to see the government exit this criminal enterprise, he also understands the need to continue to provide the benefit for those Americans who have come to rely on it, and has stated this clearly on numerous occasions.

His approach, as he has stated, would be to allow those Americans (presumably those of us in the younger set) who would like to opt out of the system to do just that.

How would we, then, continue to pay benefits, you might ask? Simple, by eliminating excess spending in other areas (e.g. defense, education, energy -- the last two being areas where the federal government has no authority under the Constitution) we could afford to cover the ever-decreasing payments while phasing the system out.

Whatever the intentions, there can be no excuse for allowing the government to continue this and numerous other criminal activities indefinitely.

I would only add that gold's value is not simply derived from perception or when man lays his hand on it. It has specific physical properties that make it not only pretty but a useful metal.

Actually, Dave, most geologists would point our that the fundamental driver behind the steady rise is the peak (we are at, near it, or have just passed) in production of oil globally. It, like gold, is a finite resource and gold, like oil, will also experience a similar peak. Dollar depreciation, regional instabilities, etc. are all exacerbating side issues. So, it is highly consequential that India and China are adopting American consumer culture and its companion, profligate oil consumption.

Unfortunately, economists have been dominating the discussion; they preach as though they had all the expertise in the matter. As Princeton's Kenneth Deffeyes says, "The economists all think that if you show up at the cashier's cage with enough currency, God will put more oil in ground."

There are a lot of people who understand economics quite well and agree with Ron Paul that allowing a competing currency backed by gold or silver would be a very healthy thing. When Ron Paul began lecturing Ben Bernanke the other day, people in the trading pits spontaneously cheered.

You say we would go into a depression if we had a gold standard, but there is no reason to believe this. Even under the gold standard we had only one major dpressiona and that was caused by the government, not the currency.

One of the most frequent arguments made against the gold statndard is that we had more volatilty as far as recessions. But if you analyze the data, you will see that, in fact, the preceived stability of the fiat currency we now have comes at the price of the dollar's constant devaluation. Under a gold standard, the economy always righted itself quickly and without devaluing the currency. Also, recessions which occurred under the gold standard were almost always precipitated by some ill-advised government action.

If we have sound money and a free market, we will be much better off. You can keep using the funny money if you choose to. It's a free country.

We the people of These United States must be givin back our birth right, as put forth by our founding fathers. It assures us of our rights, and gives us as citizens the right to remove any abusers of power by any means. Our rights have been removed at such a fast pace, (through the use of non-decypherable jargon). Ron Paul is the only guy I've ever donated to and certainly the only real change coming from the Republican party. Giuliani is just another crazy war with Iran guy who is obviously a pea brain. Romney is just another slick politician with canned answers and not real passion for anything but power. McCain is worthless for this state and has no real understanding of the Constitution. Ron Paul is the only candidate that does not blow smoke and fake touchy feely emotional speeches up our rears! He gets down to business and tells it like it is! I dont hear any other candidate telling the "real" truth on issues like Ron Paul does. Its time to wake up pepole and take back America before its too late! Ron Paul gives us the truth, and the truth shall set us free!!!
