A driver'slicense is a form of transportaation mainly. I think giving illegal alien a driver's license, would make it easier to come in contact with them, because of their information on the license.

Clintont's new position, that she does NOT support the plan, she says "As President, I will not support drivers' licenses for undocumented people and will press for comprehensive immigration reform that deals with all of the issues around illegal immigration including border security and fixing our broken system."

I just timed her response: 9 seconds. Earlier, she tried to say this was something not easily explained in 30 seconds.

We did not get comprehensive immigration reform at the federal level because the GOP called Bush's plan "amnesty." Therefore, she supports the GOVERNORS in whatever decisions they feel they have to make for the time being at the STATE level.

I watched the debate, and Hillary didn't take a position FOR or AGAINST the drivers license issue. That's how some of you "anti-Hillary" vultures (with the help of the bored media) are choosing to interpret what she said. She took a 'cautious' and 'thoughtful' approach to the subject and didn't commit one way or the other. What's wrong with that? Isn't that better than the ridgid, cowboy stubborness we have had from Bush the past 7 years (oh, wait -- I forgot..its called "decisive" right?).

So, now she took a firm stand. Great - what's your problem? And, if she took it based on public opinion polls or input, all the better -- isn't that what we want from public servants?

I agree with the first comment -- move on to another subject that actually means something to voters. I think it's clear that, from the start (Nashua, NH), HRC had misgivings about issuing licenses, but didn't have to give a yes-no answer because she is a federal employee running for federal office and issuing licenses is a state matter. This is what I don't understand. Everyone calls her the most divisive dem candidate, Obama especially is running on a platform of bring people together to solve problems. Hillary actually comes out with proposals and plans to do that, and she's ridiculed as 'triangulation and poll driven.' So it's o.k to say you'll be flexible and responsive and listen and work with the other side, but if you actually try to do that, you're labelled a flipflopper, Bush-lite, panderer?????? From the proposals she's made she sounds like the least divisive candidate out there.

Clinton may have been imprecise in her answer to one question, but has not been inconsistent. At the time the question was asked she did not seem to have a full, well-reasoned position on the driver's license issue (a state matter), as she does on a full range of federal issues (domestic, defense, and foreign policy) likely to come before the next president.

As part of comprehensive immigration reform, do you want driver's licensing to become a federal issue, where you go to the IRS office or the Social Security Administration office instead of the state DOT office?

In all of the ad nauseum blog criticism of Clinton's answer, I have read no practical solution to the illegal immigration problem. No Democratic presidential candidate and no Republican presidential candidates has proposed a clear solution either. Why? Because no solution is possible without acknowledging that U.S. business has a vested interest in maintaining the status quo and (like it or not) we do as well. We must address that contradiction before moving forward.

Voters who believe that illegal immigration is among today's essential core issues are becoming the new "single issue" robots of the 21st Century, much like the "right-to-life" robots of the 20th.

For all the clintonista in this blog. I know that you've been trying hard to explain the inexplicable. October 31, 2007 the day after the philly debate, Senator Clinton's campaign send a press release in support of Governor spitzer idea to give an DL to illegal immigrants. It was reported by Adam Nagourney in the NY Times. So in less than two weeks, Senator Clinton offers four positions on a simple question.
In the debate she says that it makes sense but when she was called out by Senator dodd, she says that she never said that she was supporting the idea. Then on October 31, 2007 she sends a press release to announce her support of Spitzer's idea. Finally, yesterday after checking the polls and the withdrawal of the plan by Governor Spitzer, she announced that she is against the idea.

I'm an independent, but after the bush years i was saying to myself that there is no way I'll vote the GOP in 2008. Now, i know for sure that if the only candidate the democratic party can come out with is Hillary, then I'll go back to the GOP.
I've found a new respect for the courage of Senator Mc Cain and Senator Obama. These two candidates are real leaders, they have some backbone to stand for what they believe in. You may not agree with them, they'll listen but they'll always tell you what is needed to be heard and not you want to hear. Our country in these difficult times desperately needs this kind of leadership.

It is so sad to see the lack of knowledge on these boards. DL issue is a State issue not a federal issue. States make decision on these issues they tried to make it a federal issue by the real id act and several states stated they would not go along with it. Educate yourself folks it is very important! Unfortunately, that is the reason why we are so divided in this country because we debate but we are not versed in the issues of the debate. Read and not listen to everything you hear from the pundits. Go Hillary!!!!!!
