Clinton fails to mention all the governmental waste associated with some of this funding. I was once on the government payroll working for an agency that "helped" individuals and their families with developmental disabilities, such as Autism. In fact I had to leave the agency because I saw so much government waste, and physically became ill at times. I was actually flown in to meet with Senators to lobby on behalf of this agency in a Lear Jet, along with a couple other of the Program Managers I worked with. I suggested that we drive up to save the agency and our tax payers money, but I was told we have the funding to pay for it, if we don't spend it we lose it, does that make sense? NO!!!! At one point I was told not to work so fast because I was making the other employees look bad. That was the last straw, I am no longer employed there, I went back to the private sector, not making as much money or getting the perks I did with the Government job, but I can sleep well at night knowing that I am no longer a part of the big government wasteful spending and tax rip off machine. People don't let these Politicians fool you, especially those that are into all the Social Programs, there is more waste there than you can imagine, and guess who pays for it? The citizen taxpayers of America. The patients I worked with did not benefit, the employees of the agency did, and that to me is wrong.

After she stripped funding for research investigating the connection between thimerisol and autism out of the Combating Autism Act, after her mass-vaccine push that started in 1992, which resulted in increased vaccination, and increasing autism that paralleled, now that new research is showing that blood mercury levels ARE correlating with autism - Hillary Clinton is going to march in and save the autistics? Perhaps this is just a clever scheme so that no one notices that she is personally responsible for so much of the trouble. Very clever of her to help cause a problem, and then be the one to solve it. Well, the corruption and cronyism has exploded under Bush. Organizations like FEMA used to be highly effective under Clinton. I have an autistic son who was diagnosed when he was 2 years old. He now is 9 years old and my wife has been battling for him for several years now.

I followed the debate when the Combating Autism Act was introduced in the Senate in 2006. Senator Chris Dodd was working with Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania as the main sponsors of the Act in Congress and it was quite a battle to get the act passed.

I live in Council Bluffs, Iowa and have made an effort to see what each presidential candidate was doing about autism. I wasn't surprised to find out that Senator Dodd was most informed about autism in comparison to the other candidates. I found out in his campaign that they were currently working on funding the Act. In fact, I will support Dodd at the caucuses on January 3rd because he is the Democrats best hope. Dodd decided to run because of the current adminstrations disregard for the US Constitution, the balance of powers of our three branches of government, and the current administrations poor work which has damaged our nation's integrity amongst our world's neighbors. Dodd has been in the Senate for 5 terms and has a record of passing legislation that has helped American families and children. He did his work on the Combating Autism Act before he decided to run for the presidency and because it was the right thing to do. There are alot of good reasons that he should be our next president.

Hillary Clinton's timing on this issue is interesting and needs to be examined. The caucuses are about 5 weeks away. If Clinton felt this was an epidemic why did she not say something earlier. It appears that she is using autism as a political football, a means to gather support at the caucuses. This weekend she thrust national funding of the Combating Autism Act into the limelight. I think this is oppportunistic and irresponsible because the funding of the Combating Autism Act, like autism, is a complex issue. Senator Clinton did a poor job during her husband's administration when she created a backlash for universal health care as first lady during his first term. That backlash led to the first Republican congess in 40 years and set back the opportunity to have universal health care in this nation. I hope she doesn't do the same for the autism cause.

I would rather have Senator Chris Dodd leading the charge to combat autism than Senator Clinton. His experience and leadership gives me more hope. Dodd is not using autism as a means to get elected. It appears that Senator Clinton is using autism to boost her chances to get to the Whtie House.

Just a side note, Democratic Candidate and US Senator Christopher Dodd WROTE the Combating Autism Act in 2006 and carried the heavy load to passage. I am thrilled to see that this tragic disorder affecting so many is now getting the debate it deserves. With 1 in 150 children diagnosed with some type of ASD, we are speaking about a large population of our future generation who many never achieve self-sufficient and productive lives. I see no problem with candidates doing anything on autism research, funding, services for anyone with it at any age, especially long term care, respite care, etc.

In 1994 I was invited to hear President Bill Clinton give his radio address on child support enforcement after passage of a certain law on it. I think he got briefed on attendees. My sons were 14 and 12 then. Before the address, we met him. I told him my name and shook his hand, saying 1:2 sons had autism. He stopped, looked at me and said, "I remember reading about you." I knew it was just a matter of time before Hillary Clinton would talk about autism because with 1-150 children having autism she knows she will reach a pretty big voting audience. As a parent of an autistic son I can usually tell when someone wants to use my son's autism for his or her own gain whether it be political or financial. I can only speak for myself but I know there are other parents out there who feel the same. We are smarter than that. Why is she just now coming out with wanting to help autism? Where was she when Bill was president? She had plenty of opportunity to do something about it then or even as a Senator in NY. Sorry, I don't buy it. Clinton has a different plan every other week depending on what audience she is speaking to. I just wonder where she is going to get the billions of dollars she is planning on spending if she should be president?? This really upsets and offends me that we are giving someone the podium that has never been there to help the autism population before and now we are to believe that in an election year she all of a sudden has a crusade to help defeat autism! But I can tell you that money could have helped us when looking for professionals and tutors that we could not pay for. I have two severely Autistic daughters, so trust me I can feel your pain better than most, and for you to buy into this is beyond belief. What about our kids, David? Ours are no longer babies and will soon have to face the world that doesn’t' seem to fit for them. I want to hear more about adult services and what happens to our kids when they are no longer in schools and their disability is so harsh that they can not find a job, let alone interact socially. Amazed at the messages posted here. Most divide on red/blue lines rather than look at the issue itself. I am glad that any one will pay attention to autism whether they are a Democrat, Republican or Libertarian. My eldest son is Autistic, 4 1/2 years old and recovering with the help of Biomedical from a DAN doctor. My middle daughter no signs so far at 3 years old. And my baby 8 1/2 months has not been vaccinated or had more than 1 antibiotic since birth. It is pretty clear where this problem began.

We ALSO have to be careful what we give our Children to eat stay away from Processed food and hormones!

When will the FDA admit to these problems!!

When someone in POWER has a child with ASD. They will change their tunes.

I'm glad this has come out in the forefront - though it's a very complex issue. But to start harping on researchers being in it for the money just really gets me. I was in research for over 10 years, and am in grad school now, slowly working my way through. Many researchers make poor or marginal salaries compared to many others. They make huge sacrifices financially and in other ways to do what they feel is of benefit to others. It's others who benefit from their research that can make tons of money.

Many research programs falter due to lack of money and support - or cannot even be started for the same reason. For the person who said 'researchers' are in it for the $ - well, you obviously don't know much about who does most of the ground work in medical research. (ie. assistants, associates, academics, etc.)

I'd just say - please - make sure you do alot of good research yourself before jumping to conclusions based on a few things you've seen or heard.

Clinton's decision to bring it up now and "win votes," as you may say, may be true. She may be pandering to those who work with autism - or those who have it - to vote for her. But, we have proven here that we are just as politically divided and skeptical as the next group. Why "pander" especially to us?

Another thing I've noticed... none of the other politicians are saying a thing about autism or autism research, at least publicly. It is nice to know that someone cares about us, even if she is doing it for the votes. At least it'll bring some more attention, even if the money is unforthcoming. And let's face it, we do need the attention.

I am the mother of a 6 year old with autism, my family spends at least 30,000 dollars a year on therapies, supplements, doctors, and special foods for treatment of this crippling disorder. I have seen biomedical treatments, hyperbarics, and behavioral therapies work on my son and others like him. None of these treatments are funded by medical insurance companies or the government. I also see families and children who can not afford these services who would benefit greatly. What a injustice for all the children and families affected by this epidemic who are unaware of treatment available or unable to afford treatment.
Autism is not a "one treatment fits all" condition or diagnosis.
Does it really matter who the president of this country is as long as we have a leader who is willing to address the issue of funding and research for the largest disease that affects children today? If you think about it, in twenty years if something is not done about it now, we may not have an adult who is not "on the spectrum" to run for president!

I hope Hillary follows through with her promises but I'll believe it when I see it. I have Aspergers Syndrome and have a daughter with Autism. I get so tired having to fight for services. Then again so does everybody else who has a child with whatever problem.

It saddens me to think that some people believe you can place neurotoxins in infants blood streams and they will be unharmed. It saddens me not to know what is to become of my eleven year old autistic son after my wife and I pass. At least someone is lobbying for people affected by autism. There is a lot of confusing information out there about vaccines. Lots of doctors who cannot or will not come to a conclusion about them. Vaccines are beneficial to our society but only on those who can handle them.

Vaccines contribute to autism, it is not the only cause. Antibiotics on an already weak immune system just help to weaken it more. Vaccinations for every child before they are even two, especially the 3-in-1 vaccines, are hurting our children that have a weak immune system. Our babies cannot handle all of the things that are contributing to make their bodies unhealthy. Their bodies are being depleted of the good bacteria by the antibiotics and vaccines and they can't fight off infections. Then the bad bacteria and yeast overgrow in their system. They become picky eaters because of nutrional deficiencies and the pickiness then causes them to eat foods that aren't nutritious. Our daughter gagged on vegetables and meats and they often made her throw up.

There are tests that can be done for children with autism and biomedical treatments that can help, but it comes from the families pocket. Vitamins, minerals, and probiotics that make them healthier and then they are willing to eat nutritious foods. I could go on and on.

Information is out there on treatments for autism and the causes. We need more press on this information so families affected by autism know what to do. Health Care or the government needs to help cover the costs of all the vitamins, minerals, probiotics, testing, treatments and doctor visits that are associated with helping people with autism.

Money is flying out of our pocket to help our daughter and at least we are in a position to take on these costs. What about the families who can't. Don't they deserve to treat their children too?

At least Hillary is lobbying for families affected by autism. I wasn't a big Clinton fan before, but I may swing my vote her way if she has my daughter's best interest in mind.

Fist off. I noticed people making mention of "parents of children with autism". What about people with autism? This is just another example of the opinions of autistic people being ignored or marginalized. Because I am autistic I would say that my opinion counts MORE than that of a parent.

Now on to Hillary. In a speech she talked about curing and preventing all forms of autism. In my mind that is nothing short of eugenics. Fundamentally autism is about the wiring of a persons brain. A persons brain dictates who they are. So my autism is a fundamental part of who I am. So any efforts to "cure" my autism are fundamentally efforts to destroy me.

There are people who have made contributions to society BECAUSE of their autism. Two good examples are Dr.Temple Grandin and Dr.Dawn Prince-Hughes. Both their contributions came as a direct result of their autism. Had they been "cured" of their autism, they wouldn't have made the contributions they did.

If we find a way to prevent future cases of autism, how many more great contributions to the world are we preventing.

I wont support Hillary and her genocide against my people.

As a mother of an autistic child, I was skeptical of the whole vaccine/autism claim. However, I had my son tested for many things that pointed to this. He is not immune to anything, yet exhibited very high antibodies to measles. His immune system is damaged. He has yeast throughout his body. After chelation, his tiny body dumped high levels of mercury. If autism is a psychological disorder, why do I change up to eight "dirty" diapers a day? It sure quacks like a duck to me.... The first case to go to court, Michelle Cedillo, will be awarded compensation, I understand. The Federal Claims Court itself has CONCEDED that thimerasol was indicated in contributing to her autism. I am not a Hilliary supporter by nature, but 1 in 6 children have some sort of delay or developmental disorder right now.
