Wow if that isn't proof of MSNBC's bias for Obama then I don't know what is. They pick out three of the greatest leaders of all time and compare Obama to them just because he touts National service. Wow, I think you need to do a little more than that before you start comparing him to Kennedy, Lincoln and MLK.
I have never once heard Hillary or Edwards compared to any great leaders favorably on this website. I guess we know who they want to win.

An admirable idea swathed in fawning hyperbole by an obvious partisan. If I were to do and, "emotional scale" analysis of your little piece above, where do you think it would fall?

We SHOULD have some form of MANDATORY national service, as many other nations do, for our young people. It would help not just our country, but those enlisted in that service, be it in a capacity like the Peace Corps., or AmeriCorps, the military or one of the sub-groups mentioned by Obama. The question is if any program of that kind can have the intended impact if it is merely a voluntary program. All the flowery rhetoric in the world won't get any more than a previous president (Who oddly, isn't mentioned above)who Like JFK before him (and this guy was an ACTUAL President, mind you.)created a voluntary service program that has enlisted over two hundred thousand young people since it's inception. Also, before I see one more message from Hillary supporters about Obama's purported lack of experience, remember that this is exactly what Nixon said about Kennedy. Also remember that Bill Clinton said judgement is even more important that experience in one of his debates with Bush I.

I initially supported Edwards and I still do, but Obama is just great too. Obama is like JFK and Edwards is like RFK. Why not have them both?

If he truly wants to be annother Kennedy maybe Obama shouldn't be proposing to raid NASA's budget to fund the education beaurocracy. I'd love to vote for Obama, but cutting the knees out from under the space program is a deal breaker. I agree with you on national service, but forcing somebody who doesn't have a desire to do serve would be counterproductive and detract from the program.

It might just be time for all Americans who come of age to do some national service. I guess the question is what kind of service at what level. I would love for there to be a lot more programs that pay people to go through medical programs (doctors, nurses and other things like that) that would serve in rural and depressed urban areas for a short period (number of years of service for a number of years of school).

I don't know how it would exactly work, but the idea that corporations could have tax credits and other incentives to work with poor performing schools and at risk students to make sure that they succeed in school. The federal government could pay for part of R&D or small taxes like FUTA in exchange for different social services within communities with needs.

Just a thought!

But there is NO difference between 'mandatory national service' and being a slave of the state. When the state assumes they will get a chunk of your life in service, things have gone too far. People that think 'mandatory national service' will do good things for our country obviously have not seen what some of the types of our country's volunteers have done in places like Iraq and Afghanistan. People in the army volunteered to do 'good' too.

To have been there at the school that gave me my degree to hear him speak today. Cornell is built on service to the campus, the surrounding community, the state, and the world around the campus. It is the perfect setting for the kind of message and vision Obama holds and wants to see Americans grasp on to.

I agree that some form of national service for young people is an excellent idea. This idea has often been mentioned as a means for those who do not elect to join the military to serve their country as civilians. Some have said that it seems somewhat unfair for the soldiers and reservists and their families to carry the major burden of the war in Iraq.

As I remember the Peace Corp, it was not limited to college aged men and women. People of all ages were able to serve. I tend to think that in terms of regaining our image with the rest of the world, such a service program would be very helpful. And, I think this is something that Americans do well--we are a compassionate and helpful people and could really make a difference in the lives of people in developing countries.

I do not have to stoop to the kind of garbage that is spewed by Bee or about a dozen others I won't give the satisfaction of seeing their names in print to, and to imply that there is no difference between them and US is insulting to us both.

The fact that there are, 'names from every camp", may be true, but the number of Clinton bashers and haters here far exceeds her supporters and the supporters of the other candidates combined by a wide margin, as a quick read of any of the topics today would confirm.
Obama supporters, and by that same token, Bee-like Obama supporters constitute the majority on this blog, much to everyone's detriment.

The, "Bee's", of the board represent the worst of us and I won't condone or sanction them or their (for lack of a better term)"contributions" by agreeing with your contention. I don't think I could insert your name in the blank, and I know that I wouldn't want you putting mine there either. There are too many from the Clinton, Obama and Edwards camps who qualify as guttersnipes here I'll concur, but I again don't think the handful of Biden, Dodd, Richardson, Kucinich, and (if he HAS any supporters) Gravel supporters here are guilty of the sins that the big 3 are, and wouldn't want to tarred with that same brush...

This is from someone who was at the second speech last night. Of course all the candidates who run for president are smart (yes even Bush), however, I think Obama is one of the smartest candidates to run in a long time. (Think the anti-Bush). I have listened to a lot of political speeches (IA, and OH) and Obama's speeches are very complex, and inspiring. He has been on the attack mode since Oct. However, he has been attacking the media, the administration, and informing American's about our own role in Iraq. Last night, he even had a new barb for the GOP front runner, (Huck) again it is subtle, and people have to be keyed in on subtext. Again, I think it goes back to his job as a con law prof. I'll try to run down some major themes of the speech (which will probably be in a run for general election) that bought many of those (men and women, under the age of 25) to near tears.
Attack Bush Republicans-made clear distinction
Focused on current situation (econ, edu, etc.) let the crowd know that they a lot of issues are the result of Americans apathy,
Focused on the concept that if people do not watch out for someone's rights, one day their rights will be impacted-this analysis was taken to encompass the major issues we face domestic and foreign
Plan for Darfur
Appealed to the almost universal desire, to have the 21st century, as a American century

I wish I could find a transcript, but there were a lot of things, not only touched on but explored in his speech.
It is odd, when some say Obama speaks only on hope, that is not entirely true, Obama also speaks to what we know is true about our own past behaviors, about our own ego's. I think it was important that he presented a message that I know my Republican Father in law, could feel proud about, and believe in. Unfortunately some say liberals (especially the progressive ones) hate America, what Obama did last night was amazing, because he took the idea and inverted it. He did not go into a partisan bit that conservatives hate America. He simply shifted the paradigm, about making America great, and what a great nation achieves. The speech was not pie in the sky, it was grounded in reality, but presenting that reality in a way that makes people believe they have control over their reality. Why is that so bad?

It wasn't my intention to offend you. Yeah, there are reasonable people on this site that are able to argue without trashing someone, including you and me. But, like you said, they are too few.

It's also true that there aren't many supporters here outside of Clinton, Obama, and Edwards who use these smear tactics, so I apologize to those who I might have offended by associating them with the gutter dwellers.

It's also not my intention to condone their actions, either. I've tried talking sense into a couple of them, but it just doesn't work. And I can't speak to the number of gutter dwellers each camp has, but I could name at least a couple from each camp who are at the bottom of the respect meter. There is no changing their ways, and there is no getting rid of them. But we and others have endured so far, and I have a feeling that we will still be here when they are gone after the election season.

John Edwards did in fact introduce a similar plan that was widely ignored by the mainstream media. He has proposed national service corps. for the youth which would be called the "Marshall Corps.", and would work to provide medical care and aid to the impoverished around the world. It was John Edwards who for the last year has been calling on Americans to "Be patriotic about something other than war", in his calls for National sacrifice by Americans to stem the tide of Global Warming.

I like Obama. But Edwards is the real deal. Obama says he was always against war with Iraq, but inexplicably endorsed Joe Lieberman over Ned Lamont.

tokevon from houston, i heard that response in full. obama didn't say he would not fund the space program at all. he said we need to get our finacial house in order and that he would hold off any additional expenses for about 5 years. the space program wouldn't shutdown.

he wants to get us out of this tremendous national debt that we owe mostly to china who is an adversary that we could have to deal with in the future. china has a hold on this country that has influence on the dollars value. do you realize the kind of security risk that presents to us as a country.

imagine what we could commit to the space program on a balanced budget instead of if we owed our trillion dollar debt to foreign countries. think about it.
