There are his tax raises in Arkansas. His use of government funds to personal reasons. His role in the parole of a convicted rapist that later raped and killed another innocent-- This is more proof that he will use anything to gain votes, including his own religion.

Though I can not see voting for Huck based on his policies, I think that there are some confused people who believe that separation of church and state means the loss of free speech if you believe in God. He has a right to express his opinions. This ridiculous tolerance of all things except Christianity may be the very reason he is doing so well. Religion tolerant people are becoming tired of such a minuscule minority trying to dictate to the majority at the expense of free speech. He gave an opinion, he did not suggest arresting those who disagree. Get a grip! In a prior debate he stated that he would enter a war with Iran without the consent of Congress and if elected he will raise taxes and sink the US into more debt..

He is not saying that God is endorsing him. He is not saying that God has chosen him. He has made it very clear that he has no Messianic ideas for himself. He knows he is not chosen.

If you have the Holy Spirit within you, you just understand this. Their is a HUGE difference between religion or tradition and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It never ceases to amaze me how it has become anathema to mention God in any public sense anymore. For those of you concerned about "separation of church and state," I can assure you that the Founders were not concerned about a political office-holder recognizing God as his Guiding Force. As a matter of fact, even the most cursory reading of this Nation's political history shows that the Founders were VERY religious themselves. Separation of church and state, according to the Constitution, simply guarantees that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof...." Can anyone please explain to me how someone not being ashamed to mention God outside the mosque, synagogue, or church is violating this tenet? For the record, I don't recall seeing any references from the Governor to any specific religion...merely statements highlighting his belief in a Supreme Being. If I didn't know better, I say that there was an underlying fear of God and a Judgment behind the anti-Huckabee sentiments.

What Huck has to prove is his maturity beyond the poor decisions he made in previous public office.

Otherwise, in the Oval Office, he may say:

"No one understands why things are happening the way they are
but they remind me of the story in the Bible when....and I am thoroughly enjoying every minute of it."

Voters want substance. He has given them a "good ol' boy" image so far.

If he has been in Harry Truman's day, I don't think he would have been emotionally
capable of sending the A-bomb to Hiroshima and Nagasaki after Japan bombed
us in Pearl Harbor.

We may need to hear what his alternative would have been.
We all can predict that every other candidate running
would say, " to negotiate."

My comment about fear is based on the vehemence and vitriol that most of the posters in response to this blog and others that I have read have come out with. My comment was somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but the fact remains that the rather *irrational* responses some have come up with are based more on emotion (not sure if it is more fear or hatred) than fact. And for the record, I am completely in agreement with you that it is not a Separation of Church and State issue...however, that hasn't stopped those that seem most fearful of a Huckabee candidacy from raising that facetious argument to try to scare those individuals that don't know what the Constitution truly says about that matter. Mentioning god over and over in your run for political office my seem to be innocuous but it is a subtle message, 'I am the chosen one, the annointed one'. Since Huck is a baptist minister, we know his beliefs, if he wore bowling shoes I'd assume he was a bowler, I don't need to know that he thinks god is behind his surge, what I want to know is does god support the party planks, free markets, taking money from social programs to build golf courses for aging generals, Will raping the earth get us to heaven faster?
I believe a person who shows virtue is better than a person who preaches it to get your vote.
Huck was a part of the process that released a killer from jail, he could have said it was a mistake in judgment and asked for forgiveness, he went and blamed it on clinton, I heard the victim was a Clinton relative, hmmmmmmm.
If Huck and Romney use god to further their candidacy, then I can question why they think that is so. I am not questioning their convictions, I am questioning their reasons for doing it.
The repub candidates need the evangelical vote, simple fact, mentioning god gets their attention, simpler fact. Any christian that sees this must ask one simple question 'is he doing this for my vote', and then act accordingly.
Your enemy is not secular humanism, your enemy is the person who trys to use your beliefs to sway you to vote for them.

Huckabee is not evil at all. I am a native Arkansan and I have seen him in action or "inaction"
He and his wife are both weird. He is also not very smart. HIs wife is really pretty rough around the edges. She has even jumped out of planes from time to time. Not a genteel lady at all.

And, wow, do people need to actually do some reading. The seperation of church and state is nowhere in the constitution. It was from a letter by TJ. I laugh at people who say the founding father's would never allow this, or allow that... Here's a nice test for you. Find the federal budget from the first 30 years of our countries history... The founding fathers actually budgeted money to missionaries to convert indians to Christianity. Read speeches that they wrote. Washington, Jeffersion, Franklin all spoke very openly about their faith and their view that God was needed for our country to survive.

What the founding fathers didn't want is for persecution of people for their faith. (ie Catholics vs Protestants)... ie religious freedom, which we have. I have a mosque about 2 miles from my house and people can freely worship there.

I think that Mike Huckabee is a likable guy and actually, I am a person of faith. But unlike the good governor, I dont' believe God works in the way he indicates. When things do go your way, it is dangerous, no, it's presumptuous to invoke the name of God, as the reason.

If you look at the Republican field, it seemed quite obvious that evangelical Christians would find a home in the Huckabee candidacy. They distrust McCain because of his aspertions during the 2000 campaign, they distrust Romney because of his Mormonism, they distrust Guiliani because of his lack of morality and Thompson just seems to lack moxie. Huckabee was a natural default candidate for people of Christian right wing (Ron Paul is just too out there for the vast majority of evangelicals, who actually do support GWB's position on the war). It just took time for people to become engaged in order to align themselves with the candidate who was most closely associated with their religious philosophy.

That's good for Mike Huckabee but whether or not this coalescence is enough to deliver him the Republican nomination, remains to be seen.

Still when one compares this natural course of events (in retrospect) to the work of God, I feel that it is a bit demeaning of God's work. It would be presumptuous for us to understand God's will in these circumstances. I much preferred Huckabee's comment at the You-Tube debate, when he said that "Jesus was too smart to ever run for public office" when answering a WWJD?-type question in relation to the death penalty. That answer emphasized his faith yet avoided a self-proclamation of being 'the chosen' candidate.

I am so grateful that I live in country where I can be conservative, liberal, moderate, religious, an atheist, an agnostic, a Muslim, Christian , Mormon or a Jew and it is my inalienable right to do so. I agree that the religious right needs Huckabee, but I think the general populace is much more moderate and am hoping that in the general election that the right person gets elected..this election is so important, and the decision so big, I just hope that we get it right this time..judging by these blogs, my boyfriend is correct, he is predicting that this election will be nastier, and more divisive than the last two...unbelievable, but I think he is correct.

Objections to Huckabee's statements like this have less to do with the separation of church and state principle and more to do with Article VI of the constitution. Article VI states that "No religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States." So, when a candidate makes claims to be the "Christian Leader" (thankfully his most recent ads have dropped this claim) and then claims that God is guiding people to vote for him, it is foreboding. In every essence he is self imposing a religious test on himself and possibly future candidates by running a blatant identity campaign that says, vote for me I’m Christian just like you. By making this the focus of his campaign he can then skirt the real issues in some ways. This also, conveniently for him right now but not in the long run view, works to exclude all candidates who are not "one of us" but might hold the same political conviction as "us" eliminating important allies on issues like abortion, same sex marriage and the like.
By no mean should we eliminate from political discussion the values and moral convictions that people of faith bring to office but Huckabee has no one to blame but himself when people decide that they are not going to vote for him because they don't like his religion. He can't have it both ways.

Layne and Mitchell- I think you both hit the nail on the head. I am also a Christian. I am very religious and pray several times a day. I frequently credit God for the blessings in my life. However, I found Huckabee's comment highly inappropriate. He should thank God for whatever he wants- privately. I don't mind him acknowledging God or his belief in Him- that is fine with me. But comparing his surge to the story of the loaves & fishes is just way over the top. His surge is because of the evangelicals (a huge population in Iowa) wanting one of their own. Rudy's early supporting comments of him probably hasn't hurt either. Like all the others who have surged, unless he can show that he has some substance that matters to the PEOPLE, than his surge will disapate just like the others (Thompson, McCain, etc.).

By the way, Alvar, Huckabee is hardly the first person to stand by his belief in God. Nor will he be the last.

I can't believe that anyone would compare Christianity to Islam let alone a terrorist organization like Hamas. That demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of either Christianity or Islam. How about doing some research and learning about the subject you want to talk about before you open your mouth to demonstrate your ignorance. Ignorance is the most expensive thing that our world pays for. Freedom of speech includes the freedom to talk about your beliefs even if someone else is offended. I don't remember anything in the constitution that mentioned a right to not be offended, you can pursue non-offendedness (I think I just invented a word, sweet), but that doesn't mean you have a right to it.
