As an Obama supporter, I would much rather have the dirt come out now, in the primary, than in the GE. And your generally positive coverage of him might actually hurt him down the road. But, i will take the press (and HRC oppo) at their word, and assume Obama is as crystal clean as he says he is.

And if that is the case, there should be no stopping him to the White House, aside from Republicans running a racist campaign. However, I assume that will be rather difficult for them to do, since other big media names have been taken down for racist comments (see: Imus) in the past, that is as long as they do not work for FauxNews.

Bush did not know everything about every subject he has ppl to inform him and he makes policy based of of the ppl around him.

In regards to the comment that Mr. Obama shouldn't admit to his drug use..why not?? I think it's good that he's being honest about it. If he tried to hide it then it would make him look ten times worse once someone else "dug up" the facts.
I think it's great he was honest about it, it's shows he's HUMAN and made mistakes but that he's obviously learned from them.
And there is nothing wrong with the fact that he didn't publish the real names of people from his past. Maybe those people have cleaned up their acts and are now leading clean lives. Back when a Republican columnist (Novak) reported that the Clinton campaign had damaging info about Obama that IT HAD NO INTENTION OF RELEASING, the Obama campaign screamed the sky down, as if (a.) Novak [who later turned out to have heard it from somebody who had heard it from somebody] was well-informed on the Clinton campaign and (b.) Hillary had run an attack ad containing such information.

The person who forwarded the Madrasa email didn't even originate it, and in any case she was instantly dropped from the Clinton campaign. Now somebody says something speculative (and by the way, almost certainly true) about how Republicans will handle the drug stuff, Hillary immediately apologizes, and the Obama campaign is still trying to make hay out of it.

Obama himself has tried to exploit a similar theory about Clinton -- that the Republicans will exploit her high negatives, that she's un-electable. He's so holier than thou and yet so mendacious I want to throw up. It's like a soccer player lying on his back holding his leg and screaming, trying to get a penalty against the other side. That's what you do when you can't actually score. Obama is running a victim-centered campaign. He wants to win primaries on sympathy.

"Last summer, a few Clinton insiders -- headed by her Senate chief of staff, Tamera Luzzatto -- paid a presumably social visit to the Cape Cod, Mass., vacation home of a prestigious Democrat reported to be in Obama's corner. Luzzatto warned that Obama was ethically challenged because of his leadership PAC. My sources indicated that this was not an isolated incident, and the slush-fund story was spread widely".

In a later incident, a Democrat, not on Clinton's Senate or campaign staffs but close to her, a month ago approached a party activist who has not made a commitment with this message: Skeletons in Obama's closet would make him vulnerable if nominated. He did not elaborate and said the Clinton campaign would keep its anti-Obama information to itself, remembering mutually destructive assaults between Howard Dean and Dick Gephardt in 2004 that enabled John Kerry's nomination.

The Clinton campaign denied all this, claiming a Republican plot. In truth, I have not talked to a single Republican in my reporting of attacks on Obama. In the wake of these denials, Wolfson made public his slush-fund accusation on ''Face the Nation,'' shortly after polls showed Obama passing Clinton for Iowa's Jan. 3 caucuses:

I have to say, I think we all need to catch up with the times and realize that a good majority of people now--be it in the public eye or not--have at least tried drugs if not habitually used them for some time during their youth (up through college). It happens.

Does this provide an accurrate gage to how effective of a candidate they are now? I think not. Judge the candidates on their performance as a public figure, not for whether or not they smoked pot in their youth. To not support a candidate for that reason to me is a bit ignorant and short-sighted. If they are abusing drugs or alcohol NOW, I think we have a different issue on our hands.

I agree that this will resonate less with the electorate than when Bill "didn't inhale" and when Dubya had "youthful indiscretions." My guess would be that the posters on this thread that are grousing about youthful drug use are all retired, or close to it. Not to say that older Americans aren't a big voting block, but people of every generation since the 1960's have personal experience with drug use or drug users and aren't as thrown by the concept of youthful experimentation. It's the ones like Rush who can't seem to quit that worry me, particularly when they take hypocritical stances about other addicts and alcoholics like he does. Perhaps a mandatory urinalysis for all candidates? That would put it to rest.

Marijuana and Cocaine are substantially different, and Clinton didn't write a book bragging about using cocaine, like Obama did.

I don't see that an apology was necessary here. Facts were stated and true, legitimate questions were raised as pertaining to those facts. I can see those definitely being issues raised, considering how he seems to like talking about his drug use in his book and to high school students. So, yet again, why is it some horrible offense to question Obama on things pertaining to his past actions that he brought up in the first place?

I am tired of his "free pass" from everyone. I have to agree that we still know very little about him and apparently if anyone dares to ask it is called a dirty trick or mudslinging.

I have to ask, why is it perfectly fine to question Clinton about things from her past and bring them up all the time (including things long since discredited), but it is not okay to do the same with Obama? Am I missing something here? What's with the double standard?

Forgive me if I sound naïve for asking this - but I don't understand the problem with the comments - or the apologetic reaction given by Clinton. Shaheen says that Obama's past drug use may be used against him by republicans in the future. My understanding of politicians is that they will use anything as ammo to undermine their opponents - this case in itself is a perfect example. Am I to now believe after this backtracking that Republicans will not attack this potential weakness? Why would they not? Anything that can be construed as wrong will be used against these candidates - and will be used against them even after they have become president. Remember Bill Clinton's pseudo admission of drug use? (He didn't inhale as I recall.) It seems to me that it would only be natural for Republicans to use this as fuel - and natural if Obama's current rivals use it as fuel against him. As long as Obama is willing to continue admitting this past mistake he will remain strong in the eyes of the public. I guess in the grand scheme of strategy I just don't see why there is as much of a reaction as there is. To me, this is a non-issue that would have little effect on Obama's campaign and isn't worth an apology. His being able to say "Hey, I made a mistake, I'm not perfect" - makes him appear more real than a candidate that tries to appear flawless.

Bottom line, if you want to be president of this nation all aspects of your character are fair game.

I am seeing alot of negative comments from Dems that support the one candidate or the other. Rather than fighting their battles for them on the blogs we should encourage everyone to vote their individual conscience and make sure that our state and local polling place gear up for a voter turnout like they have never seen.
We don't know who the Rep are going to nominate and I think that they should all be taking pot shot at them and let see which one has the best arguements against them since they are going to be the real contest not each other. The one that will make the best President will be the one that start campaigning against the Rep candidates NOW.
We don't have to agree with everything a candidate stands for to elect them we have a Congress and a Supreme Court for checks and balances. We need to let the Candidates for President as well as the other politicans know that we are educated and aware an that special interests (even though they definitely effect us, because we work for and benefit from what they do)and that we are paying attention to the information that is out there and we hold the power and our votes are not bought they are earned.
Let put the fear of GOD (or your higher power) in to all of the politicans. Let's make them aware that we can turn non a dime if they don't shape up.
Let do what Washington, Jefferson, Adams and Benjamin Franklin and Teddy Roosevelt expect us to do. Let excercise out rights to a better government and not so much waste.
It still months til the Conventions and alot can happen, let just take a deep breath and see who the Republicans are looking at and then we will have a better game plan.

I think we all know that, if HRC were the nominee we would have to listen to at least 6 month of what transpired during the 90's both Bush & Clinton. I for one am not upto to that. I want to hear about how we are going to bring our troops back, healthcare & education, tax relief how to deal with immigration & crime. Not who did what and said what in the 90's.
I don't think anyone plans in their early 20's to run for President, so what they think and do then as compare to who they mature into should be more to the point. Let's use a little common sense when we consider our options.
Number 1 Are they articulate? I have had enough of GWB and the way he stumbles through the English language.
Number 2 Can they work with Congress and get some decent legislation passed.
Number 3 Can they represent the American people who do not make 6 figures domestically and internationally.
I am not going to let myself get to worked uo about it yet we have a ways to go.
I am just grateful that we finally have the internet so that we can connect and throw out alot of information and sieve through it. We don't have to depend on the media for all of our information.

a. On 12/3/07 Senator Obama said "I have not been planning to run for president for however number of years some of the other candidates have been planning for.”

b. On 12/3/07 Senator Clinton's campaign responded to his statement by citing several instances in Senator Obama's past that show yes, he has been planning on running for president for a number of years. He has discussed it with friends and family for at least 15 years. As a child, he wanted to be president.

c. Everyone attacks Hillary for attacking Obama, when all she's really done is call him out for what could charitably be called a misstatement.

d. Everyone forgets a., and suddenly Obama is being defended for wanting to be president since he was a child, when it was his negative statement about the OTHER candidates wanting to be president since childhood that started everything. Didn't we do this 8 years ago? Didn't we trust the "outsider", the new guy in town? Didn't the media stick it to Gore despite the fact Bush couldn't even speak English and couldn't name leaders of other countries. I have nothing against Obama, but he seems to be getting a free ride while the media jumps on everything Hillary says. If she's strong, she's nasty, if she's softer, she's condecending. I believe it is too late to apologize for something someone in Clintons camp stated - Senator Clinton has to take the responsibilit for this happening - it should have been made clear in the beginning that there would be no smear tactics such as this. I should not think that Senator Clinton has anything to apologize for. What is the problem here? Someone not endorsed by the Clinton's, made a truthful comment. If the truth hurts, then Obama needs to go home. He hasn't apologized for his nasty comments and sarcasm. He has only shown his lack of character, by making fully personal attacts on Senator Clinton. He won't even address her by her title as Senator. He will only address her by her first name. Just goes to show you WOMEN, Barack doesn't seem to care for the female gender in a place of power.
