I think there need to be tough federal laws on repeat drunk drivers. They kill thousands of Americans every year in VIOLENT accidents, despite what Mike Huckabee says. If someone is > 0.15 blood alcohol content while driving, they should have their license suspended automatically for a year, and anyone who does it twice should go to federal prison for a few years - mandatory.

I agree the most violent criminals are the first priority, but repeat drunk drivers are next in line because of the violent public safety hazard they represent and their chronic recitivism; how about instead instead of releasing murders, rapists, molesters, drunk drivers, and violent battery offenders, we give them stiffer sentences, NO early releases, and instead free all the pot smokers in jail? I guess that would be too logical and beneficial to public safety.

Our priorities really defy common sense sometimes, and Huckabee's laxness on repeat drunk driving shows me he's not even reliable on the stuff conservatives are supposed to be good on. As a matter of fact, I bet no Repubican nominated, regardless of who it is, will take on the issue of being tough on drunk drivers, and yet at the same time they'll probably echo Romney's line about how marijuana is a plague on the American people. (Ron Paul excepted).

agreed----my son was nearly killed by a drunk driver----still suffers from head trauma----shoulder replacement,collapsed lung and broken ribs back and front.The driver was given 2 years probation a couple of fines and laughed during the trial.The judge cautioned her attorney but it did no good.She showed up pregnant at the trial(pity plea)a year later.Attorneys and insurance companies still fighting.Pot smokers go to prison----and pay fines.

Huckabee has all kinds of similar ugly cross-currents in his political past. Here we have the the GOP's premier hypocritical candidate pandering to the right-wing evangelicals for the religion vote. People of his ilk have no shame - I am completely reminded of what we're suffering with now in the Bushco regime, and this guy was an equally crappy governor. As usual, the GOP fields candidates that appeal to the lowest common denominator among the electorate.

Living in the South as I do, it's difficult to comprehend that an entire region of the country buys into a duplicitious moron like Huckabee - well, they voted for Bush twice, so a would-be Baptist minister has got to have the ear of God - right??? Go figure.

George - In otherwords, what I am saying is that if a federal law exists prohibiting marijuana, and Huckabee wants to propose a federal law banning smoking cigarettes in public, both make less common sense than tough federal laws on drunk driving; I was making a comparison in the context where federal laws on such matters both exist and are still being proposed, which is the situation as it stands.

My point is that if one is going to talk about public safety, drunk driving is way up there. Banning cigarettes in public? I say at the very least give smokers a bar every few miles where it's OK, set aside just for people who want to do that, because to do otherwise is just going too far; they're killing no one but themselves, which you can't say about drunk drivers. Pot smokers should be at the bottom of the list of concerns from a public safety standpoint, given zero reported deaths in five thousand years.

I'm going to play devil's advocate on this one, but I say let the punishment fit the crime. I think our legal system has had a field day with this circumstantial crime that has gone on long enough.

First things first, new studies show that using a cell phone, either to talk or text, impairs driving as much or more then the .08 intoxication limit most states have adopted to receive their federal funds. Now I know virtually everyone that reads this article is guilty of that crime. Just to say that some people who drink and drive kill people, therefor if you drink and drive you're going to receive a sentence such as 6 years because you COULD have killed someone is a farce. This is an issue of self control and is based on bad science.

On the other side, there are millions of people driving and texting or having phone conversations that cause accidents and deaths who are walking away uncited. And repeating. And causing insurance premiums to go up. So think about your wife getting into an accident while calling you to say she'll be late, or your daughter being rear ended while speaking with a friend to get directions...and then losing their license for a year. Spending a month in jail. Losing their job. Now you can't make a mortgage payment, and you have legal bills upwards of $10K and you're taking "attention awareness" classes for driver safety.

Your awareness while operating a vehicle is hindered by distractions abounding...DVD's, Satellite Radio, cell phones, cigarette smoking, etc. Alcohol directly relates to brain activity, yes. But how each person's body metabolizes the substance and it's effect on motor skills is unique to thousands of different factors at any given time. So we measure someone's blood/alcohol content to give us an estimate of how their brain is reacting to the substance? By measuring their breath??? Come on, this is a modern day witch hunt.

And the sad thing is, by the time science will have proven this beyond a reasonable doubt; cars will navigate themselves. So we won't have to worry about talking, or drinking, or getting lost. What will be lost, however, is our tax money keeping someone who failed to signal in jail for 6 years because he had a couple of beers for happy hour.

The prisons in Arkansas weren't overcrowded. In fact, there were years in Huckabee's term when the inmate decreased. He repealed truth in sentencing laws and always fought legislation that would increase penalties. Now he is making excuses. He needs to be exposed as a criminal coddler - if you were one of the few people who had to go to prison - just make a tidy contribution and you will be out in no time.

This article more or less raises questions on how far a person intends to go to try to sniff out conspiracy and NBC is on the trail. Huckabee exercised his rights as governor in a case that was already supported "unanimously" by the parole board. The opposition was several law enforcement officials and some other people that thought this action was suspicious. They are entitled to their suspicions, even when there is no substance. Of course that's what suspicions are, hunches, gut feelings, the things that can't be proven. Basically, the people who had no actual say or legal authority in the matter are being quoted that they don't necessarily agree with the governor's clemency. There are so many things wrong with the scenario painted in this article it is hard to imagine. But let us begin.

First, if the ramifications of this person's offence were so heinous, I wonder why there aren't more than just opinions levelled at the matter. Drunk-driving is incredibly bad, and it is opportunities like this offense that the staff of riteousness should be raised to combat the disease. However, instead this man was not burned at the stake and it was not until the after the governor's clemency that people disagreed with the act, rather than make it exceptionally clear that there was an everpresent danger at the inception of his crimes, and not at the fifth one. In a well orded society, a person would not be gradually dealt with as the same offense grows in number, but rather he would be treated seriously by the laws and enforcement at the very beginning, before the possibility of a trend occurs. I would personally rather see law enforcement be tough on crime rather than, say, tough-enough. Secondly, the parole board is slightly more responsible than the governor for being in the position to actually offer the opportunity for clemency. An entire boardroom of people agreed "unanimously" to give this guy a free ride, and the rest of the judicial system in Arkansas feels it is better to allow this to happen than to act differently or in opposition to future occasions. In this case the morality of the board must be in question along with the governor, as well as the judicial and jail system in its entirety. This does not look like a case that should be singled out for one person's actions. Yet, since the article would like to make Huckabee the scapegoat on behalf of the entire state of Arkansas, then I guess we must question him in that regard. I like where this is going, because the only reason this article was written was not to question the governor's actions against a drunk driver or a judicial system but by a suspected connection with possible lascivious fundraising activites. Thirdly, the governor, or government in general, did not control anyone's actions. Huckabee did not force this guy's wife to donate to the Republican party, and even in the article it shows that they have donated before, so they already have precedence in the matter, anways. There was no contract, there was no paper trail, there were no smoking-gun conversations between them. The evidence is with Huckabee rather than against him.

Everyone in this country has free will and exercises it as they choose. In order to type, I must write of my own accord. To go to work, I must walk or drive. I do not have to do anything if I do not want to. Mr. Fields did not have to drink and drive, he did. That's bad, but due to the desires of the American people, as illustrated by this case, apparently the state of Arkansas won't be enforcing stronger legislation on the matter of drunk driving antyiem soon. Mrs. Fields did not have to donate, she did. If you are a Democrat, you might think that is a bad thing, but at this point in our nation's history, people still have the right to give money to whomever they choose and not be criticized unduly for it. Governor Huckabee had the right to grant clemency and he did. The people of Arkansas could build more jails, they don't. Maybe witht the improved school system Huckabee created for Arkansas, those kids won't grow up o become drunk drivers like this Mr. Fields.

Upon his next arrest and right after sentencing, they give another 10,000 dollars and sure enough the Governor steps in to release him. It is truly sickening. He couldn't even list one reason why he deserved to be commuted. That section, he left blank and Huckabee went ahead without any justification and released him. Explain that one

I feel very safe there. Guiliani made it that way. What did Romney do? He actually acheived universal health care coverage in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. That is a huge accomplishment. What did Huckabee do? Well... this article I guess talks about the kind of things he did. Guiliani and Romney were trained to be in leadership/political positions. Romney even went to Harvard. Huckabee, as he loves to brag about, got his degree in theism. Which, I guess tranied him to be a preacher. Well, maybe then that's what he should do. ARKY, you are the only one from the actual state talking about this, and so you may be the only one privy to the minute details of this case. Yet the argument still falls by the wayside. You say the first donation of money coincided with the third DWI, as if that has any connection to Huckabee. You skip ahead to the fourth transgression (which I don't know how many offenses can happen before the judicial system will actually do anything), and then try to attach the actions done in the future with those of the past. An argument moves forward, not backward, except in certain instances which is still moving the argument forward. I'm sorry dude, there's nothing there.

In terms of his decision, his decision was influenced by the parole board, not the Republican party treasury. The evidence that was supplied to Huckabee was enough to convince him that Fields had changed. It convinced the entire parole board, and the laws allow this to happen. Considering our country is based on checks and balances, the parole board "checked" the courts and found them deficient in the extent of sentencing. The laws put in place by our country, by your state, gave them the power to do just that. The parole board is part of the people, moreso than just one person and, like a jury, represents the general populace. One man can change the world, maybe you can take on the challenge to at least change the laws.

If you're going to do the work of an opposition research team, how about identifying who it is? Why wasn't this done? Did this story originate with the newspaper or was it the result of opposition research done by the Republican Party? The story smells like the rumors spread against John McCain, in South Carolina, when the republican leadership smeared him with half-truths. The bad press is also like that of the swift-boating of John Kerry. As with Howard Dean it is weird to watch political parties eat their own. The similarity between Dean and Huckabee, that stands out, is both appear to be populists. The last person the establishment wants in office is someone who actually understands that the Constitution was intended to protect citizens from corporate and government abuse, not to facilitate it.

Believing the interpretation of laws by government lawyers is like trusting dating tips from Ted Bundy. Unless there is proof that Huckabee solicited contributions from Fields for a pardon there is no story here. Although, there is, arguably, a story about the stupidity of journalists trusting hit pieces that originate from Republican Party leaders and operatives.

i did it.
i started as one who was a staunch anti-huckabee. i wouldn't have voted for him if you had payed me. but looking for ways to prove his unworthiness to tell others i realized that i was possibly way wrong. so i did some honest to goodness research and now i proudly support huckabee.

I don't think this statement is true but I could be wrong...in the story I read about Wayne Dumond I understood that there were objections from many law enforcement figures to his pardoning. The parole board voted 4 to 1 against his release in the first hearing, but after Huck interjected himself into the case, they voted 4 to 1 for release.

to whoever it was that said that people who cause deadly car accidents when on cell phone: that is true, but they do not just "walk away", at least not in most cases. they are usually tried or punished in the same way as drunk drivers- homicide charges, reckless driving, etc. I had a friend hit by a car recently, that's how i know. Some states are starting to outlaw everything but hands-free cell phone use in a car. Not perfect, but better- kind of like allowing a low level of alcohol to be in a person's blood.

Carl- the quote you are questioning isn't referring to the Dumond case, or the majority of cases Huckabee pardoned. It's referring specifically to DWI cases- the field's case was the only DWI case that had objections. Just to clarify.
