sounds to me like the daily obama press release(aka firstread)is trying to head off what apparently is a thumbs up from the register to hillary clinton. the way they couch even the slightest chance of Hillary getting the nod (i.e., most board members are female, swanky dinner at fancypants restaurant) totally tells the story.....remember the fable about the fox and the grapes? I guess it's alright for these wannabe reporters on this site to coronate obama, but if someone has a differing opinion, there must be some nefarious reason behind it. get a clue chuck and all you chris matthews minions. the people of this country were led down the wrong road with the media's manipulative writings in 2000 and look where you got us.....we won't be so easily led astray again. I heard David Yepsen, the chief political reporter for the Des Moines Register, say on Hardball yesterday that he thought Edwards was the main one to benefit from the dirty tricks of the past week. When Chris Matthews asked if the paper was endorsing Edwards, Yepsen said he didn't know as that is the editorial section's decision. But you could tell that Chris was skeptical. We'll see. I support Obama, so I hope that he gets the nod. But it sounds like their endorsement is good, but not key, to victory if they did not endorse Kerry or Gore in the last two cycles.

I'll play devil's advocate. Who says this endorsement carries weight?

I'm not from Iowa but I thought the storyline with Edwards was that he came in second four years ago through sheer organization and a disproportionate strength in rural areas (because of their weighted system, a farmer's vote means more than those who eat at swanky restaurants like Azalea).

So now Edwards' rise was because of this newspaper endorsement? Not sure I'm convinced.

And as for Mondale, well, isn't Iowa tailor made for him? Simon's bounce might have some validity.

What about Bill Richardson? He has proven himself in many areas. As a governor of a border state, he has dealt with the immigration problem. Chris Matthews came out this week saying he now has him running third in Iowa. David Yepsin wrote a front page article in this same Des Moines Register following last weeks debate stating that Biden was the winner. The NY Times highlighted him the day after the debate as well.
