I am surprised at the fact that you other bloggers would not only put words in the mouth of Mr. Huckabee, but go so far as to compare him to President Bush or even suggest that he is self righteous based on the fact that he is wishing a Merry Christmas. I am so sorry that you think that he is using his faith simply as an appeal. I personally believe that if he was going for 'appeal' he would not have chosen such an ad, as he obviously knew it would be attacked.

And Amy - I think if Hillary had run the same ad it would actually have given her a boost, as it would show not only her very strong, rigid side, but it would appeal to those who do not know her better. It would be nice to see Hillary the woman, the wife, the mom, the person... not always Hillary the lifetime politician who is out to undercut her oponents in order to work her way up the ladder. I would love to know a more personal side of her - Who she is and why.

I am an atheist so-called liberal and I don't understand the outrage. The guy is running for the Republican nomination and that party is run by Christian Evangelicals. I would love for people to vote based on analysis and reason (mostly because this nation would be a lot further to the left), but that's the thing about freedom of expression - you can express yourself based on whatever drives you. I honestly could care less what Pastor Mike's personal views on moral and religious matters are - I think that for any candidate, such views are best expressed in memoirs after departing office and not coloring decisions made in the national interest from the White House pulpit, I mean stateroom.

I do, however, view with deep skepticism a man who is running for office decrying "political ads" and urging the voters to ignore such crude details as candidates' voting records and policy pledges in favor of Hallmark sentimentality. It reminds me of a salesman skimming over the fine print in the contract as he reminds me how shiny my new car is.

Most everybody in the field on either side has a core support group they're reaching out to, or expected to do well with - but Hillary's not going out of her way, for example, to alienate male voters. Edwards can afford to spurn the votes of 'fat cats' in the confident knowledge they weren't supporting him anyway, but a man with Huckabee's track record can't in my view alienate Republicans outside the Religious Right-wing fringe with this sort of pandering approach. In any case, I harbor grave doubts that a man ignorant of the tenets of Mormonism can be expected to master the intricacies of Islamic sectarianism and govern US foreign policy appropriately. I'd frankly prefer Ron Paul to get the nod, and - sorry Ron - he's a long way from being my ideal candidate.

I support Mike Huckabee, but I disagree with his putting this ad up. You have to trust a candidate for him to make this statement and for others to believe it is genuine. I believe it is genuine, but I don't really blame others for not seeing it as such. He should of focused on the issues.

However, I do believe him and hope that you would see him as a man of character and conviction. He is not going to force you to believe what he believes if he is elected president. He is for freedom of religion.
I'm sorry that many of you do not trust people of the Christian faith. Most of the time it is the church's fault for that. I hope you will see that Huckabee can be trusted.

The separation which is vital between church and state is to ensure that no church or religeous establishment should have power within the government or it's functions. However, the basis for the Constitutional rights and for our governing laws get their basis from the Bible and were penned by men of faith. They were leaving a state of bondage where a religeous establishment was forced in order to have freedom, however, they were also lead by their faith and recognized a higher law than that which they were declaring in the establishment of this nation.

I have educated myself, and continue to do so, on that matter. You should do the same. There is quite a difference in the establishment of a religeon and the acknowledgement of God or faith. Not only does Mike Huckabee have the right and resonsibility to share his views and their origin, but so do all of the candidates. I commend him for exercising that right that was given to him by the founders of our nation.

I'm not voting for Ron Paul, but he also had a nice Christmas ad recently, paid for out of his campaign funds.

On another note:

Campaign funds aren't public money. Given who Mike Huckabee's donors probably are, they wouldn't mind his spending their privately donated funds in this way at all. Others will probably like it enough to contribute some more. So what?

Oh how gullible we are. This is nothing more than a political ad masquerading as a Christmas greeting. If you need confirmation just look at the printed words on the screen as he says, "I'm Mike Huckabee and I approved this Message". It says in big capitaized letters: "PAID FOR BY HUCKABEE FOR PRESIDENT". If you really think he's sitting at home in front of his family Christmas tree as Silent Night plays on his radio, you're pretty naive. Huckabee the minister is exploiting Christmas for his own political advantage. Oh and if this really isn't a political message, please explain why he prominently displays his website address on the screen throughout the greeting. Come on America, wake up. You're being played.

Wendy, I think you and Joe from San Diego had it right. I am a Christian, I celebrate Christmas in both the religious and secular sense. I read Luke 2 every year, sing the Hallelujah chorus and other hymns at church, do service projects to help those in need, decorate my Christmas tree, put out my nativity scene, and hang up stockings for Santa Claus.

I don't have a problem with Huckabee being a Christian or saying "Merry Christmas". What I have a problem with is him using it to promote himself (again) as the "authentic Christian candidate". There is nothing authentic about it. It comes off as fake and insincere. It made me feel sick when I saw it on TV last night. I'm totally fine with him wishing people a merry Christmas, happy Channukah, or happy holidays while he is out campaigning. I don't mind him saying "God Bless You". but in a political ad ("I'm Mike Huckabee and I approve this ad), is entirely inappropriate and is obviously pandering. Especially when he said he thought everyone was "tired/sick" of seeing political ads... he may not have been talking about policies, but his ad was entirely political. God should not be part of his tagline. God doesn't endorse a candidate. Again, this ad made me feel sick to my stomach.

I would really like to hear some sincerity from this guy, but I don't think he knows the meaning of the word.

By the way, Stevie, you sound like a Hitler fan in Nazi Germany- your new year's resolution is to only shop in Christian owned stores??!! Really? So should we make all the non-Christians (or people "not as Christian as Huckabee") wear stars on their clothes and live in concentration camps? Not shopping in Jewish-owned stores was one of Hitler's first steps towards creating a dominance of the "superior race" that led to the Holocaust. I'm all in favor of supporting Christmas- but you are taking it too far. How exactly does it matter or personally affect you to frequent a store owned by someone other than a mainstream Christian? And what harm do you suppose it's doing if you do? And how exactly do you plan to determine whether or not a store is Christian-owned? Like I said before, if Huckabee wore bowling shoes, I'd assume he loved bowling but I would not want to hear about his bowling scores everyday.

Joe, I agree- I do not think Obama was pandering. I think he converted to Christianity, but that he also respects his heritage and history. I had a roommate who was LDS by religion and Jewish by culture and heritage. She practiced both Channukah and Christmas traditions. If she were to testify in court and choose to swear on the Torah rather than the Bible, I would not be offended.

Paul- you are right that no one should ever apologize for recognizing Christ's birth. However, I do believe that a self-proclaimed "authentic Christian" should refrain from extorting this sacred event as a way of advancing his own political career. And if he does, he should be ashamed of himself. I believe that is what Huckabee has done. I'm very disappointed.

That's it, I'm voting for the guy that sent me the "refreshing" Christmas greeting. The guy who had the courage to "wish me a Merry Christmas." The guy who sent me a "nice" and "heartfelt Christmas greeting." Never mind that his Christmas spot was paid for by "Huckabee for President, Inc." and "approved by Mike Huckabee".

Oh and I'll disregard his record on taxes, his lack of foreign policy experience, and his derisive comments about other faiths or denominations. I'll also disregard his stands on healthcare, illegal immigration, the Iraq war, the Afghan war, energy policy, or trade. Contrary to many here, I reject the notion that the liberties granted to us in our Constitution are based on the Bible or the Christian faith. Our Constitution and our democracy have little to do with the Bible. Our nation was born of revolution against monarchy and the divine right of kings to rule over mankind. Our Constitution and the individual liberties recognized in the Bill of Rights were designed as a safeguard against organized religion and the divine right of kings to rule in the name of God here on earth. Our founding fathers would thank the political philosophers of Locke, Rousseau and Voltaire rather than the Bible or Christianity for providing the inspiration for our Constitution. We don't get freedom of religion; freedom of speech; freedom to assemble; safeguards against unreasonable searches and seizures; the right to counsel and due process; the right against self incrimnation; the right to just compensation for public takings; or the right against cruel and unsual punishment from the Bible. The Constitution is a contract between the citizens of America and our government on how much power we give our elected officials to govern in our name. The Constitution has nothing to do with my faith or my belief in Jesus Christ. So please, don't misconstrue people's desire to keep Christianity out of politics with a hatred for Christianity.

Paul, perhaps Raf has researched Huckabee's record as governor. I have and I'm not impressed. In fact, several weeks ago, when I was considering voting for him, I did significant research into him... it was that research that has shown me so clearly why I should NOT vote for him... I looked at his own website, as well as read articles both for and against him and some that were relatively neutral. I was not at all convinced that he would be capable or remotely successful at fixing our breaking country.

Bill, perhaps it's not so much a matter of "silencing" what you want to hear. Perhaps it is an issue of what is really important in a political leader. Someone could be the best "Christian" in the world, but that wouldn't necessarily qualify him/her to be a good political leader of a country with no national religion.

I also want a leader whose faith leads him/her to make good choices and have good values. But for a president, I NEED someone who is capable of relating to people of various beliefs, able to communicate well, who has strong leadership capabilities, and who has good ideas/policies/plans in regards to the economy, the war(s), the environment, healthcare, immigration, national security, etc.

BTW, I am not a Ron Paul fan at all, but may I point out that he was actually the first candidate to put out a Christmas ad?

Huckabee is not a saint/angel/god-sent candidate. He is a regular human being. I find his self-righteous attitude condescending and very un-"Christian". If you like him because of his policies, fine- vote for him. If you like him simply because he is a Christian, then go to church with him, but please don't elect him for president.

I know Gov. Huckabee is not a Saint or Angel, but how do you know he is not a God-sent candidate? Abraham, Moses, David, all were great men used by God, even though they all made mistakes. Bill - you're exactly the kind of voter that Mike Huckabee is pandering to with this PAID POLITICAL ADVERTISEMENT. If you want to vote for most Christian of candidates, that certainly is your prerogative. Just don't bitch when others insist on voting for the least Christian of candidates. Personally, I think both sides have it wrong and you're screwing up America in the process.

I would like to see the day when Americans vote for the "most qualified" candidate in the race rather than the most white, black, hispanic or Christian candidate in the race. Huckabee's religious faith is not going to solve our problems in Iraq; or make us energy independent; solve the healthcare or illegal immigration problems; or set our tax policy. Even Jesus was smart enough to know that religious faith had no bearing on the political issues of his day. He didn't lead a revolt against Roman occupation. He didn't take sides against the Roman tax collectors.

I find it ironic that the most outspoken critics of the Middle Eastern theocracies and the so-called Islamo-fascists who preach religious intolerance in places like Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan or Iraq are also the same people in America who insist on undermining our democracy by having God on display in the White House, in our public classrooms, and in the public square.

I'm a Christian; I'm also a values voter. I suspect my values are a little different than yours. You see, I value the Constitution. I value separation of Church and State; I value my precious liberty and my right to practice my religion without you or some evangelical in the White House telling me that my values and my religion are wrong. Fifty years ago they were bitching about a Catholic running for President. Today it's the Mormons and the Muslims. God only knows what bigotry will surface twenty years fom now.

Bill, to answer your question, I would say that it's "by their fruits, ye shall know them". It's true that Abraham and Moses were "all were great men used by God, even though they all made mistakes", David was also a great man, especially in his youth, although David's "mistakes" were by far the most damning, at least according to the Old Testament. However, the good things they did under the direction of God influenced how they acted in other aspects of their lives.

For example, Abraham was faced with the tough decision of showing his devotion to God by sacrificing his son. He was fully prepared to do it, although Isaac had done nothing to deserve it. This showed Abraham's devotion to God's word.

On the contrary, when Huckabee's son committed a crime by murdering an animal, Huckabee fought against him being punished for something he deserved. If Huckabee as president is going to swear to uphold and sustain the law (as well as his committment to God to defend right from wrong), his track record is lacking.

Moses made a lot of mistakes, but after he found God, he really tried to set an example for his people, despite overwhelming odds. Huckabee has been claiming a relationship with God for the majority of his life, but has made numerous questionable or blatantly unethical decisions since being elected to a leadership role.

Another characteristic that made those ancient men usable to God was their HUMILITY- they were pliable to God's will. Huck's recent behavior has been very self-righteous and not remotely humble.

For the record, I could do this same kind of analysis on most of the candidates, but you asked about Huck...

So, do I believe God cares about the future of our nation? Yes, absolutely. Do I believe that Huckabee is God's own, personally sent candidate? No, absolutely not.

Do "Most" Christians feel as you do about Huck's ad? based on this blog, my guess would be that many do, but many with equally strong faith do not.

Bill, I respectfully wish you a Merry CHRISTmas, and everyone else a happy holiday season, however they choose to spend it.

If you don't like Gov. Huckabees policies, campaign, or past decisions, fine. I've looked at the other front runners fruits, and see compromise. It's for that reason I have to go with Gov. Huckabee. I'm not saying he's perfect, but he is rock solid on the moral issues most important to me. Although I see much larger flaws with the other candidates I don't go around slandering them or their kids. Goodness.

He has been questioned constantly for his religion. I have followed him through the debates. He did not put religion on his sleeve, the media did. So what if he wants to proclaim what he has already been labeled as, a Christian. I applaud him for his stance.

When I read all this hate it reminds me of the following verse...

John 15:18 If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you.

The man openly proclaims Christ and BAM! Crucify him.

We as voters are responsible for who we elect to rule over us. I see intolerance to Christianity dominating our government. I see immorality becoming accepted to a degree where it is being protected by law, even taught in our schools. Gods people have to take a stand for morality or this country will continue into the pit of immorality.
