I'd guess the Register endorsement will only irritated the anti-Hillary crowd even more-- unlike 4 years ago, when the Edwards endorsement gave hesitant voters some home-grown intellectual cover to vote for the New Young Guy, this time around the endorsement of Hillary is a totally different animal.

The media would like to say that the Register endorsing Hillary has turned the tide for her, but her issue isn't the media narrative, her issue is that a majority of Democratic voters do not like her. Period.

Sending non-violent offenders to jail makes them violent offenders after their release and destroys every opportunity for them finding the right path.

I do think it's pretty funny for John Edwards to act like his records on special interests is better than Obama. Edwards went to work for a multi-million dollar trial litigation firm and worked his way through the ranks of rich trial lawyers taking 30-40% of victims' money.

It is a mistake for Edward to take Obama for obvious reasons. Edward is claiming that he is strong and can fight interest groups but he has no record to prove it. When a trial lawyer wins malpractice case in court, the insurance company will raise their premium on doctors and doctors will pass sum premium to the consumer. John Edward case is a person who made money as a trial lawyer and wanted to use his wealth to pursue power in the public service. Edward’s lifestyle has not shown convincingly of a person who dedicated his life fighting for the underclass but he only wanted to use his rhetoric for fighting for them as a cover for seeking presidential power. Compare Edward’s career trajectory with that of Obama and the difference starts to stab us in the face.

Edwards also did a lot of product liability cases. You know, the kind where you sue the big corporations who make pool drains that suck out the intestines of little kids who swim too close.

Yes, he made millions. But think about one thing: these cases are often taken on contingency, which means if they don't get a settlement, neither did he. If they settled for $50,000, he would probably get a third of that. When you consider how much work goes into a case like this, the amount of money the lawyer takes home doesn't seem like that much - especially when you consider that they are gambling on a victory and they could be out all of that time and money if they don't win.

Not to mention, holding doctors accountable for the damage they may inflict is a good thing, as is doing the same for corporations. Seems to me like Edwards has spent most of his career fighting for the little people, just as he has said.

Obama seems to think it would be more productive to negotiate with corporate and special interest lobbyist to get them to work with him to solve the problem of corrupt money influence on politics. Edwards on the other hand says," the time for cowering and slaps on the wrist have passed, those engaged in corrupt politics are not going to surrender without a figth, and I am prepared to fight!" As a very successful trial attorney who has taken on corporate America, Edwards knows full well that one must negotiate from strength in order to get the best deal possible, and knows full well that the one who brings the biggest stick to the fight usually gets the better of it. Edwards also knows a president weilds a very big stick with the veto pen and bully pulpit so "please" is not the only option.

Edwards has been jabbing at Senator Obama for some time now about his Health Care plan, about him being a uniter not a divider (yea, I said it, I like President Bush even though I don't like his policies, he is a good man). Also, Joe Tripper said that Senator Obama's supporters don't believe he has the experience, that is an interesting statement because when ask, according to the polls, Clinton might be 1st in the experience question, but Obama is 2nd sometimes 3rd (Richardson who has more experience that Clinton is 2nd sometimes) with Edwards bringing up the rear.

I support Barack Obama because I agree with him. Edwards has done some interesting things over the past 4 years, but for all his talk on poverty he still lives in an extravagant mansion in Chapel Hill and I'm sorry, but I don't see how he'll be able to prosecute his way through the presidency.

You can't divide up America. As Obama said in 2004, there is the United States of America - not corporate America and private America, not Red States and Blue States, the United States.

To use an example ... look what Bill Clinton did by working with drug companies and AIDS activists. He brokered a deal which has drug companies providing medications in Africa at a discounted rate. Those drugs save lives and prevent disease.

Now, say what you will about Bill Clinton, but those are the sorts of SOLUTIONS our country needs.

Check out Barack Obama's campaign website and you'll see he's drawing people from a wide range of political spectrums. And he's not collecting money from corporate donors or PACs.

Hey fact get your facts straight. Does anyone here believe that a candidates volunteers and supporters have not asked questions of their candidate? Come on, every candidate has been asked such a question. The difference from this and the Hilliary "plant" was the fact that Hilliary's campaign was actively passing out questions for people to ask Hilliary, and when those people refused they moved on looking for others to do so. Fact -- you have absolutely no proof that Obama's campaign (or for that matter any other campaign, other than Hilliary's) was passing out pre-set questions to ask the candidate with the candidate having a pre-scripted response to it. This is such a crock. But if Hilliary wants to re-raise the issue of her campaign planting questions with her audience then by all means do so.

Jerry, you remind me of the typical Republican. Drug courts and rehab have been highly successful. It is cheaper than incarceration, they have a very low recidivism rate(unlike prisons), and the lack of overcrowding would allow us to lock up more deserving criminals for longer periods of time.

It never fails that there is always a Rep who wants to be "tough" on criminals but does not realize that they working against their own self interest.

Clinton has done what women have done for ages: She's rode the coattails of the man in her life to a place of prominence and now basks in the reflected glory of someone who I think was a truly great President: Bill Clinton.

Newsflash! Being married to a great President doesn't make you a great President; it makes you part of the entourage. Nobody shows up to a Springsteen concert wanting to hear the roadies play.

And, being an experienced wife whose only success amounts to benefiting from the indulgence and political access granted by a husband is not relevant Presidential experience.

Edwards is a certifiable PITA. And that's why he should and will be President. I think his time as a lawyer likely involved screwing a lot of regular folk out of a lot of money and pretending that he's doing it because he loves humanity; but, hey, that's what lawyers do. That's how they get rich. It's their nature.

But that's irrelevant. The point here is, Edwards clearly has a serious bug up his butt regarding special interests and big business, and, personally, I don't care why he wants to beat up on them; I'm happy to hold his coat and watch get busy.

The medicine Edwards is selling is exactly what this country needs to take right now to make it well.

I think the last Des Moines Register debate where Edwards wowed the undecided voters in both the CNN & Fox focus groups really started the ball rolling for Edwards momentum. On TV he's appeared relaxed and confident. This weekend I watched one of his events on cspan and he was brilliant. You can see with your own eyes that he really connects with the voters during the Q & A after the event.

He's been greatly outspent in Iowa and received far less media coverage and yet Obama & Clinton have not been able to put him away. Imagine what would happen if the entire Democratic party were backing him. I'm so excited that with Edwards as our nominee this could be the year where the Democratic party competes in all 50 states. Sean, tell me, how many southern states did Edwards deliver to the Democrats in the last presidential election when he was the VP nominee? Did he at the very least even deliver his own state? It will not take you long to add up on 1 fingernail the number of states to the above questions.
Lets be honest, in political terms, Edwards is a lightweight and against Huckabee, he will not carry the South, including his own state. He is no more experienced than Obama in that his only experience is as a Senator. His words and intentions are good but anyone who thinks he's just going to walk into the White House and all of a sudden, the interest groups are just going to lie down is dreaming. The only way you reduce such an influence is by inclusive negotiations.

Interesting Paul Krugman column in the NYTimes today calls Obama the "anti-change" candidate:

This sucking of american jobs can be directly corellated to her husband's NAFTA policy. Ther only hope for the Democratic Party is John Edwards as he is the Lincoln or Roosevelt figure that can untie moderate Republicans (like me) and Democrats for a better America. He should not choose either Obama or Clinton as a running mate. His best choice would be Bill Richardson. Richardson has valuable foreign policy experience and executive office experience. I have done some research recently to try to find an objective way to compare the major candidates for the democratic nomination. I came across the Library of Congress website that shows the number of bills sponsored by each member of congress since 1973. I compiled the numbers and here’s what I found:

In examining the table above, it is obvious that Senators Clinton and Obama have each done a lot of work on behalf of their constituents and of the American people and deserve credit for attempting to take a leadership role and make the most of their time in office.

The numbers for Edwards, however, tell a very different story. Based on this data, John Edwards was among the least active Senators during his time in office. In looking closer at the data, one finds that during the 107th Congress, a 2 year period from 2001-2002, John Edwards ranked 90th among the 100 Senators in number of bills sponsored. Although this information has not yet been discussed much during this campaign, I believe it is VERY important and speaks volumes about the character and substance of each candidate. It is very easy to stand at a podium and talk about leadership and working hard on behalf of the American people. It is much more difficult, however, and a much greater indication of the merit of a candidate, to back up that talk with action once in office. In this area, it appears John Edwards lags far behind the other candidates. How can he expect to lead this country as president, when he was FAR from a leader in the Senate during his time in office? I think this should be raised as an issue and I would like John Edwards to explain why we should vote for him when his rivals have clearly worked much harder for the American people while in office.

Now I do realize that the number of bills sponsored does not necessarily correlate to the quality of a Senator, but I think a 6 year trend of ranking near the bottom is very telling and warrants, at the very least, an explanation.

I don't agree with you you wrote, but your comments are most appreciated and I do wish you would have dug a little deeper. I want to know why Black Women are all over Hillary. What are the social ramifications of this? Black women choosing a White woman over a Black Man? What does this say about the community itself? I know Hillary likes to speak as though she is one of them, but we know that is not the case no matter how you look at it.

The Democrats true colors are showing quite vividy, being led by none other than the so-called first Black President Bill Clinton. The Clinton machine, in desperation, is revving up its steam roller engines. If there was anything to convince us of the true Republican, Bush-like qualities, of the Clinton machine, it is the negative, campaigning in which these, poor excuse for Democrats, are now participating. I always used to brag that to my Republican friends that Democrats would never indulge in the smear campaigning that Bush lauched against McCain in the 2000 South Carolina primary. How wrong I was. This is dispicable and Bill Clinton is behind it all. Why would he wish to perpetrate crimes to which he himself fell victim?

No matter. Democrats in Iowa don't like this type of campaigning and will laugh off these attempts at the campaign of personal destruction. I feel that all of these comments are being read by supporters of the candidates and I am sure they are paying attention. I hope that even though very few of these people are in agreement on anything everything that is being discuss can make a difference. It make me proud to be an American, because we realized that we can make a difference Kerry did not loose the election in 2004 as much as we deed, because we did not think our individual votes counted. I don't think that will happen again. I know that we have candidate out there who BELIEVE that we need to use all THREE branches of the government for it to work properly.
We will just have to let each state play it out and then we can really see the BIG picture. N.H., So. Carolina and FL and February 5 will really show us what we are dealing with.
Truth is I would LIKE to see BIDEN with Obama or Edwards. We would have candidates that would talk issues and not personalities. We would have an unbeatable ticket. Republicans would not be able to bring up the past mistakes in their personal lives.
