While T.T. goes overboard, his central argument is immigration, which an endorsement of H.R. Clinton would imply that she is tough on immigration. Too bad. I heard Tom speak twice, and met him at our Christmas Dinner here in Iowa.

He gave a pretty impassioned talk, about, you guesed it immigration. But he spoke about the upward battle he had to fight when he first got to the House, and he would hold a conference on immigration and half the room would walk out. Now he has amendments accepted with little challenge.

But he gave a good talk about "moral relativism", and how this immigration issue is bigger than the Mexican issue, but also about us knowing who is here in the United States. Namely making sure terrorists are not getting in and staying.

As he correctly stated. Social Security Reform, SCHIP and all the other issues are meaningless, if terrorists are able to get in and succeed.

Can anyone argue with that? I'm all for immigration, as long as it is legal immigtration, but when people come into this country illegally, then they have few rights and should be deported immediately. Companies caught hiring illegals should not only be fined; the CEOs should have mandatory jail sentences (one month per illegal hired). If anyone is caught renting a house or apartment to illegals, then the apartment or house should be confiscated by the government and sold to the highest bidder. If we did that, then illegals would have no work and no place to stay. I promise you this would decrease the flow across the border.

In Arkansas people say the illegals do jobs that citizens don't want to do, like work in chicken plants. That's correct, because the wages are so low and the work is so hard that anyone raised in this country knows it is unfair. If all the illegals were gone the law of supply and demand would come into play and those $8/hr jobs would start paying a lot more. That would be good for everyone.

This country was built on the back of immigrants, but they were mainly legal immigrants. We need to keep it that way.

Good riddance, I say. I'm marrried to an Illegal alien, and can speak first-hand about just how broken and unfollowable our immigration laws are, and how poorly informed most americans are about what they say.

Tancredo's immigrant bashing directly advocated hurting my family in support of a law that even congress agrees is broken. Tancredo offered more enforcement of something that didn't work.

Tancredo offered virtually no presidential policy initiatives outside of scapegoating immigrants.

I for one, won't miss him. Hopefully without him, congress can come up with an immigration law that actually SERVES america, and let's people in when it's warranted, and offers ways for the folks who have fun afoul of the law to make right without destroying families.

I know many folks won't agree, but I really ask people to give some thought to whether deportation (The immigration equivalent to Capital punishment) and enforced separation from one's loved ones is really the ONLY way to resolve an immmigration infraction, or whether this country can consider compassionate alternatives for folks with family ties.

Remember - the law as it's currently written is unworkable - like prohibition and the 55mph speed limit. We really need an alternative - preferably one that keeps citizens from losing their loved ones.

We as a country don't have to be the mean spirited police state we're rapidly becoming.

My family is depending on you folks to press for a humane alternative to our current immigration law.

Joan from Seattle. Please travel to Marshalltown, Iowa and you will see first hand what illegal immigration has done to that community--primarily illegals from Mexico. I always find it amusing how people on the coasts think Iowans are some backwoods folk who are isolated from the rest of the world. Our state is somewhat populist and we are about as purple as you can get if you want to get into the red state/blue state analogy. With one of the better education systems in the country, I actually think Iowans have a pretty good analytical capabilities when considering the pros/cons of issues.

America has a disintegrating infrastructure..no oil, water rationing in the West and rolling blackouts because too many people are here already.
America does not have a future if there are a billion people in this country by 2020, especially if the majority of those people do not know or understand how to keep the place running..and they don't. There are limits to how many "poor and illiterate" a fast paced high tech society can take in before it collapses. America is already collapsing..Go look at the road..The roads are not worn..the roads are crumbling under the weight of too much traffic..How about 1000 people per square mile in California? Immigration has always been a problem in North America, and unfortunately so has bigotry, hatred, prejudice, greed, fear mongering etc. Mr. Tancredo's pandering to those emotions and those who rabidly agree that it is the "Boogey-Man" of illegal immigration that is at the root of all of our problems is over. Sadly, those who found some "truth" and "wisdom" in his message are still here. My ancestors were here originally (native americans) and arrived on the boat with Cortez. Since the beginning of history those who came after the original settlers (some 40 million years ago)in the North American continent have done so at the expense of those who were already here. When Columbus first "discovered" america there were 500 nations and some 20 million people living here. They are all gone, either destroyed or assimilated into our society. During the 1800s and early 1900s millions poured into America from all over the world. You'd have to be stupid or purposefully obtuse to believe that all of them arrived "legally" with papers. Compassion and American values led to the establishment of Ellis Island, compassion for those who were here and for those who were coming. Time for us to show that compassion again. Where is the "Ellis Island" processing center for the newest wave of immigrants? Or is the message that we are no longer that America and no longer have those values? Or do we only do that when its Europeans and caucasians? I'd like for all of the posters who claim to be descended from "legal" immigrants to show your papers and prove your ancestors arrived here legally or que up for the deportation line.

I have always taught my kids to respect all work, janitor, lawn service, ditch digger, lawyer, ceo, waitress, doctor all the same. Honest hard work no matter the position the same respect is given, no work is beneath you. The law is the law, without it we are lost. Come over legally or not at all. Better yet fix your country and stop telling us whats wrong with ours. I would never presume to sneak into a foreign country and start running it down.
