This tactic is AFSCME flexing it's 30,000 member muscle for the candidate it endorsed with a mailing highlighting the differences between the Edwards and Clinton mandated UHCP's and the Obama plan. Your characterization of this as an attack, even your semantic gymnastics in attempting to justify your contention is forced.

How is highlighting the primary difference between the Edwards and Clinton plans and the Obama plan an, "attack"? Oh, it's because it's CLINTON. Have you really descended to the point where ANYTHING that senator Clinton or her supporters is called an ATTACK?

If Obama had ANY major union support (which he does not) and they sent out a mailer saying that Clinton's and Edwards' plans force everyone to purchase coverage, whether they want it or not, would you have characterized that as an attack? I can see the header now

"Obama's Union Muscle Flexing in Iowa", complete with breathless fawning praise for his union support.
Clinton has several unions and Emily's list all working for her in Iowa, which is kind of an advantage down the stretch. If the shoe was on the other foot and CLINTON complained about the hypothetical Obama mailer being an, "attack", your story would have been
"Clinton Camp Cries Foul", complete with skeptical ruminations as to whether the Clinton claim was an attempt to blunt Obama's union support, or some other subtext that painted Clinton in a negative light.

Please explain how the mailer, which doesn't seem to question anything other than the coverage of senator Obama's UHCP, constitutes an, "attack", and or why you have chosen to present it as such.

If Obama lies about his health care plan and says it is univiersal when it leaves out millions of people, what else is he lying about?

I will not vote for Obama not because he is black green or purple.

I will not vote for him because of his policies and his not being there when he is needed. I want a hard working policy wonk who is a qualified experienced leader.

We ignored a candidate with those important traits in 2000 and voted for a green George Bush because he was the media darling and look what we got.

The tactics being used highlight what Obama and Edwards have been saying: Clinton is NOT a change candidate. She is the next part of the Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton dynasty.

The reality is that many, many people just do not like her. MANY republicans will claw their way to the polls to vote AGAINST Clinton. They have been conditioned over the years (rightly or wrongly) to see Clinton as a scary, scary person. Energizing the republican base by having Clinton as a lightning rod candidate will have bad ramifications for the presidential race AND the congressional races.

She is clearly very bright and clearly knowledgable on the issues - as are Obama and Edwards. She just has 16+ years of highly-charged political baggage that will weigh heavily on the race should she become the democratic candidate.

This is not a "roll of the dice." Pick 10 staunch republicans and ASK THEM. They will go to the polls in LARGE NUMBERS in an Anyone-But-Clinton mission.

Actually, Clinton doesn't even have a health care plan of her own. First she just copied Edwards health care plan and second, she didn't even suggest how a mandate would be enforced.

So Clinton's "mandate" isn't a mandate, therefore it is NO DIFFERENT from Obama's.

Edwards does offer a penalty. He suggests that one way to do it is simply take money out of people's paycheck. The problem I have here is that enough people will object that it won't pass.

Ultimately, the only reasonable step in the direction of true universal care (Kucinich plan) is Obama's.

Oh yeah, Clinton, by not discouraging this flyer displays a lack of integrity that is astounding. Why not put her quotes on this? Maybe this group has changed its mind and is supporting Edwards now?

Obama's plan does not have a mandate like HRC and Edwards. How can you force people when they don't have the money? I agree that the Clintons will do and say anything to get back into the White House. That is being proved right now. Senator Obama had 130 "present" votes out of 4,000. Using a "present" vote in Illinois as a protest to a piece of legislation is used quite often from what I've read. Is this all that Hillary has? Other than trying to make him out to be a drug dealer when he was a teenager, or implying that he is a Muslim plant to take over the country. Let's look into the Clinton's closet and see what falls out of it.

To Van in NY. I'm an Iowan. I got two mailers today. One was a positive ad from Edwards touting his positions on the issues. All his mailings for the past several weeks have been positive and about the issues, probably because he remembers Gephardt and Dean taking each other out with negativity back in the last election.

The other mailer I got was this piece of garbage from AFSCME (glad I'm not in THAT union anymore, by the way). The reason it's a hit piece is because it goes negative on Obama's health care plan (which is fair game), but quotes Edwards to do it (which is not). Is this an actual quote from Edwards?...yes...has Hillary said the same or worse on far more occasions?..yes...

The only reason to use the Edwards quote, instead of any of Clinton's (while simultaneously neglecting to mention that you're a group supporting Hillary), is to try and make it appear Edwards is the one who's gone negative and kill two birds with one stone.

Because it was a union I used to belong to, that I couldn't believe was dumb enough to endorse Hillary, I knew what was up before I read this article. And I'll make sure everyone I know is aware of it as well. It made me angry with the Clinton camp, regardless of whether it was the campaign or one of its surrogates that pulled this crap. But those who don't know the whole story may be turned away from Edwards because they think he's the one that's "gone negative".

Let's join the real world. The Republicans have been beating the crap out of our really good candidates with really dirty, untrue, campaign ads, assisted, at least in 2000, by the mainstram media. What is an underhanded, but true, ad, compared to Willie Horton, or the Swift Boat ads? If this is all it takes for Hillary to beat Obama, I don't want him to try to run against a Republican.

I received the flyer and sent AFSCME this email in response. I'm also sending it to the DM Register.

I received a flyer in the mail yesterday from AFSCME attacking Obama's health care plan. I agreed with the points the attack made. I was and am disgusted by the implication on the flyer that the attack was coming from John Edwards.

AFSCME endorsed Clinton. AFSCME should have the guts and common courtesy to fight the campaign using YOUR chosen candidate, and not hide behind another. This deception simply confirms the negative perceptions many people have about the modern American labor movement.

Be honest about who you are and what you stand for. Don't hide behind tactics like this.

Obama's plan is, to quote CBS, universal *access*. Meaning anyone who wants to enroll has the ability. The "15 million" analysis (read: guess) is within the bounds of possibility, but still generally unfounded.

Hillary's plan, meanwhile, is Massachusetts-style "universal coverage", meaning coverage is enforced, and any who fail to buy health insurance from independent and still outrageously-priced vendors are penalized. That's right, people too poor to avoid their own health care will be fined. This isn't just universal health care, it's mandatory enrollment, and that is a hell of a crime by any standard.

Do your research, people, and stop eating the sound bytes. The Clinton plan is a cow pie with icing on it. It's having the ability to choose a federally-provided health care plan that matters, not whether someone comes around with a stick and forces you into it. The 46 million uninsured Americans are in this mess because they don't have the money to get coverage. Hillary seems to think it's because they're too stupid to know better. Let's prove her wrong.
