And Romney, on top of this "nuanced" explanation, WOULD NOT come right out and state in the Tim Russert interview that a long-standing Mormon church doctrine of prohibiting blacks from leadership roles in that church was wrong.

Flipflops...distortions...exaggerations...nuanced positions. Call it what you will, but they are stacking up one after the other and I think we need a person in the oval office whose word actually means something.

Josh, even if Mitt Romney's father did march with MLK, that is not the point. The point is that Mitt Romney said he saw his father make that march, but is now saying that he didn't actually see it; he "saw" it. He says that's not lying because "saw" doesn't necessarily mean that he saw it with his eyes, but that he saw it as an imaginary vision in his brain, whether or not it really happened.

That's definitely the logic of someone I'd love to see running the most powerful country in the world. If he had been President instead of Bush, maybe he could have "seen" Saddam Hussein disappear from the face of the Earth and the whole Iraq war thing could have been avoided.

THE MAIN POINT ABOUT THIS ISSUE!!!
First of all, I don't care that Romney is Mormon, nor do I care about any other candidate's religion, BUT I would like to know if it informs them on policy issues and if so how? I think that is legitimate. Also, there IS a separation of church and state inasmuch we don't want our President or Congress beholden to anyone except for the People (us).
So, with that said, Tim Russert asked Romney whether he thought that the Mormon Church's policy of denying African-Americans the right to practice their religion until the 1970s was wrong, Romney refused to denounce the Church's policy as to not offend his Church...that I have a BIG problem with. If you asked any of Christian candidates was it right for their Churches to justify slavery and second-class citizenship of African-Americans by placing them in the back of churches, I think that most would denounce that practice. If not, clearly their priorities are in the wrong place.
So, if Romney couldn't openly denounce overt racism and discrimination by his Church to not offend them, how can we expect that he answers to the people and not the Mormon church and its leaders, one of which is mentor and advisor. Furthermore, since Romney clearly did not want to offend the Mormon Church, apprently supporting pre-emptive war DOES NOT offend the Mormon Church...if that's the case, then what does it say about the Mormon Church and Romney for that matter regarding African-Americans that it would offend them if he denounced the Mormon lateness to civil rights?

Once again, his religion SHOULD NOT matter BUT when it clearly has implications on what he can and cannot say because of his allegiance to an institution other than the American people and our Constitution perhaps it deserves a look.

What is it about flip-flops? I like flip flops, they are practical, cheap, easy to find, to replace when they wear out and just about every one has had at least one pair in their life.
Some of my flip-flops have served as a really good foundation and support for the person I am today.
Some examples would be I am never going to have children, followed by if I have children I will only have 2, I strongly believe in ZPG to being the proud mother of 4. To the strongest case for flip-flops to date, I have never seriously looked at the Republicans as any thing but hypocrites who prefer to drag dirt and scandals out of closets than stand on their own merit all the while they screwing over everyone that crosses their paths to get what they want and then hold themselves up as being the higher moral standard. However as time passes and I continue to learn and grow as a person, I am willing to admit that I just may pass on being a Democrat in 2008 and support Mitt.
Learn, Be smart, and admit that we have all for better or worse worn flip-flops.

The Church of Latter Day Saint (LDS) preached that blacks were demons on earth and could not go to heaven until the mid 70's when they discovered that black people had money too. I see (not figurative) that most of the people writing negative comments on this imbecilic subject know little in regards to the English language. You should all check your own verbiage and punctuation prior to clicking the submit button.
It is amazing to me how the media can distort and blind us from what is most important - all for the sake of ratings. If we spend all of our time being hung up on one interview, or in this case one word, we are shallow indeed.
There are several candidates with various views, and that is what matters. What are each of them offering as proposed solutions to each one of the dilemmas we face now and for the next four years? Which one offers the most realistic and acceptable solutions and which one has a record that has proven success in carrying out their promises?
I have been a flip-flopper on candidates up to this point, but I have done my homework and I am convinced that the candidate that has the cleanest and most successful (not perfect) record of all is the very man you are bashing. There’s no argument in this; the facts speak for themselves. Romney is not perfect, but he is the best of the candidates and he has my vote. Hello, I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Commonly referred to as the "Mormon" church. If you really want to know what we believe, there are many missionaries who would be willing to sit down and discuss the tenents of the faith. How people have so much time to tear down another's religion is beyond me. If you really need something more productive to do with your time, there are several homeless shelters in your area that need some help. Elmer, Mitt Romney did not serve in Vietnam. He was doing missionary work in France. His boys are not serving in the United States military either. There was a piece on this on 60 minutes, plus several legitimate newspaper articles that confirm these facts. There are only three Presidential candidates who did serve in the military: John McCain, Duncan Hunter (who has since dropped out), Ron Paul Mike Gravel was in the Army, and Chris Dodd (he did not go to combat in Vietnam though, he was in the Peace Corps at that time). The only candidates with children serving in the military are: John McCain who has a son who is serving in Iraq, Joe Biden whose son will deploy to Iraq in 2008, and Duncan Hunter who has a son who is an Iraq Veteran.

I pay special attention to the military service of the candidates because my husband is a medic in the US Army and is currently deployed for his second 15 month tour in Iraq.

On February 10, 2002, while overseeing 2002 Winter Olympics, ROMNEY became extremely angry upon encountering a traffic jam at a venue and proceeded to berate two persons authorized to direct traffic there, including with obscenity laced tirades, according to a police captain at the scene and a volunteer targeted by ROMNEY. The traffic volunteer Shaun Knopp stated that ROMNEY "asked me who the f___ I was and what the f___ I was doing. We got the Olympics going on we don't need this s___ down here."8 Weber County Sheriff's Office Capt. Terry Shaw, commander of the Snowbasin venue, stated that ROMNEY twice used the F-word while also berating one of his officers, Deputy Kodi Taggart. Capt. Shaw stated that ROMNEY "was abusive" to his officer and advised, unsuccessfully, that "he needs to apologize."9 ROMNEY denied part of the allegation, insisting he hadn't used the F-word since high school -- but admitted he used a word he described as "H-E-double hockey sticks." Disposition: The Utah Department of Safety advised it had decided against initiating a "profanity probe."10

Two days ago the big debate was whether or not Huckabee's Christmas ad was sincere or pandering. today it's about what the word "saw" really means. My thoughts on the whole campaign: I believe Hilary will be the democratic nominee and it is my feeling the only way to beat her in the general election is to nominate one of two people: Mitt Romney or Giuliani.

This is my logic: People want great change in America and a clean break from Bush; democrats and republicans alike. If Huckabee is the nominee, Hilary will convince voters that if you think Bush brought too much religion into the white house, then watch out...Huckabee will be worse. He is having success in the "Bible Belt” states but I feel that some of his poor decisions as Gov. will ultimately be his downfall.

Fred Thompson I feel would make a decent VP but he lacks the support and to be frank, the knowledge of crucial issues. He is also too much like Bush.

Ron Paul: Ron Paul who? No, I'm just joking. Paul can sure raise a lot of money in one day...what was it, $6 million? Wow! But his views and some of the policies he wants to introduce are neither pro-democrat nor pro-republican. He is by far the worst debater in the republican race. Hilary would be a shoe-in if Ron Paul was the rep nominee.

John McCain has a lot of experience and has a good consistent record to back it up. His downfall is his lack of organization. He spent something like $36 million during this campaign and not much to show for it. Also, the man tends to be a hot-head. I feel that if nominated, the Hilary team will find a way to hit a nerve and make him explode. He will say something very un-presidential and look stupid.

Giuliani and Romney have the money, support, and organization. Out of Giuliani and Romney, I feel that Romney has the better shot at beating Hilary. The logic behind my theory:

Giuliani has many personal skeletons in his closet. Hilary will find them, exploit them, and make him look unfit and unworthy to run the country. He is tough on crime and terror and I personally think he is running his campaign very savvy by not attacking anyone and playing the "American's Mayor" card. But I feel that his stance on abortion, gay rights, and his scandalous personal life will play a big role with conservatives. Hilary vs. Giuliani would be a very close race and it would be anyone's ballgame. I only hope and pray that Giuliani wins if these two meet.

Romney vs. Hilary on the other hand would make for a very interesting presidential race. The first woman nominee and the first Mormon nominee. Their views differ drastically on almost every issue. All the democrats will vote for Hilary and the same with the republicans voting for Romney. I feel that the presidential debates will be important and will sway enough independents towards Romney because he is the best debater and orator. Hilary is a politician. Romney is a business man/politician/leader. He is charming and likable, presidential and has a history of success. Hilary will probably play the "Mormon" card against Romney, kind of like the "Kindergarten" card she played against Obama. It will only hurt her in the end. In general, I believe that the voters will not judge the nominee on religion but on experience, views on critical matters, and their integrity. The only hope for Hilary is to make Romney out to be a "flip-flopper," and I must admit, he seemed to have changed his views on certain issues. But I'm confident that if given the opportunity to explain himself, the American voting population will understand and sympathize. I see this race being close but not as close as a Hilary vs. Giuliani race. Romney wins by almost double digits.

The Washington Post's David Broder wrote a book in 1967, The Republican Establishment, which said that George Romney "has marched with Martin Luther King through the exclusive Grosse Pointe suburb of Detroit and he is on record in support of full-coverage Federal open-housing legislation."

Broder, reporting today from Manchester, New Hampshire, said he does not recall, after 40 years, any more details about the march. Broder said he spent "a lot of time" covering the then-governor of Michigan before writing the book about the GOP with Stephen Hess.

A campaign spokesman cited Broder's book as evidence that Romney and King marched together in Grosse Pointe in 1963. Kevin Madden also wrote in an email that "George Romney had a long record of supporting Martin Luther King, Jr. He attended his funeral in 1968 and believed his death was "a great national tragedy."

Another campaign spokesman, Eric Fehrnstrom, said today that the younger Romney was speaking "figuratively" when he said he "saw" his father march with King. Fehrnstrom offered an example to explain: "It's like if I said 'I can see Mike Huckabee as president.'"

Why doesn't everyone just get a grip and admit that this happened. Perhaps Mitt should have had a copy of the Detroit Free Press, 6/29/63 with him to prove that his father did this. Roger, Steve, and all you other predictable anti-Mormons- numerous people on this thread have pointed out the logical multiple meanings of the word "saw". But since you mentioned it, none of the 11 witnesses of the plates that became the Book of Mormon ever renounced their witness. Some of them later left the church, but none of them ever denied what they saw. Steve, I would welcome anyone who wants to know more about the LDS church to research it- just as you suggested. Two great places to start would be lds.org or mormon.org the only two church sponsored (and therefore genuinely accurate) websites. They could also ask a practicing Mormon (novel idea), contact the missionaries, or attend an LDS church meeting. They can research as much as they want without ever accepting it or converting. This has all been mentioned before, same old debate as months ago. Move on. Let's not be so irrational as to get hung up on semantics.

Mel- FYI, the LDS church is audited every year by a non-LDS independant auditing firm. All of the church's money comes from donations and tithes from its 13 million plus members. We believe in tithing the same way Abraham did when he paid his tithes to Melchizedeck. Members in good standing voluntarily give 10% of our income to the church to help build buildings, help our neighbors and for humanitarian aid to people around the world, regardless of their religion. Furthermore, the LDS church receives no subsidies from the government like many churches do. It is entirely self-sufficient. Yes, it is wealthy. If it were a business, it would be a fortune 500. But it is not. It is a church. Move on.

He spreads just as many inaccuracies about his opponents as they do about him. He has flopped on immigration, gays, AIDS, Cuba, to name a few. And now the media is starting to look in to his supposedly natural weight loss as potentially a surgery weight loss (still better for his health but dishonest... his sons should get the same treatment, for the sake of their own health).

Looks like "thou shall not bear false witness (lie)" is questionable too.

Frankly I wouldn't care about how well a candidate is doing on each individual commandment if he wasn't constantly out there self-righteously claiming to be the "authentic Christian candidate"...

As far as I can tell, he is failing on at least 5 of the commandments... 50% is an F. Perhaps he should leave that particular rhetoric behind and try talking about what he can do for this country in terms of economy, the war, healthcare, immigration, etc. However, it seems like anytime a reporter asks him about a real issue, he makes a joke or changes the subject.

This is why I will not vote for him as president.

I know there are no perfect candidates- not even close, but there are better options in both parties than Mike Huckabee.

Could there possibly have been pictures taken of this news worthy event? And if so, is it reasonable to assume that George's son, Mitt, could have possibly "seen and witnessed" the event at least through the media attention it attracted? Tough, I know, for the faint of heart.

Mitt is clear and technically correct in the use of the English language in his speech. There was nothing deceptive, nor inaccurate, in what he said.

Did JKF's children actually see their father take the bullet at the moment it happened? But could they not say that they saw how their father was assassinated years later?

George's march in Detroit was for the same cause MLK was protesting. It was admirable of George to be involved in such a worthy cause. This reflects the values that Mitt was brought up by. The Romney's are noble people!

BTW, as I mentioned in the message to which you were responding, I only brought it up because of Huck's incessant need to be the "Christian" candidate. As far as I'm concerned, he brought it on himself.

Mel- would you ask an ex-Catholic about the Catholic church or an evangelical about Judaism? I have seen the website you suggested. It's garbage. It's written by bitter people. If you want to learn about a religion, ask people who practice it, or look at authentic church literature. That should be obvious. You don't read a fantasy to learn about history, you read a history book... same principle- if you want to learn about something, go to the source.

I have been a member of the LDS church for more than 25 years. I have researched many other religions as well as my own. I have NEVER felt pressured to pay tithing or do anything else. If you "know" all about us, but your research is all on anti-mormon sites, then your information is flawed.

If you don't like it, don't join it. Worship however and whomever you choose. I have.
